  • Stentor Coeruleus is a giant single celled organism with tons of tiny "hairs" in it's surface called cilia.
    This particular species is very famous and is alsp very easily recognisable by the blue-green colour and the nucleus in the shape of a string of pearls.
    Seen at 100x magnification using oblique lighting and Darkfield.

    I can feel the squishiness of it when it tries to pass between other microorganisms, imagine how tiny this gap must be that a single called organism struggles to pass through

    Wow! So high detailed! I like how you can see all the organelles, even the cilia kicking to propel the microbe through the water.
    Honestly, this is the best microscope video I have seen so far!

    May I ask which microscope you used to record this scene ? Colors are vibrant, image is pretty sharp. I don't know if it's only the effect of oblique lighting and darkfield that made the footage possible.

      It is an Olympus BX50 with the Plan 10x 0.25 objective. The video was taken with a Nikon D7100 (APS-C DSLR). Edited in Shotcut with some sharpening applied.
      Oblique lighting does give very nice results on it's own, but certainly the 100 watt lamp of the scope, plus the camera and the editing help with sharpness and colour rendition.

      It is. And this one may as well have a couple tens or a hundred of Mitochondria to fuel the entire cell.

      @@jaredponder4149 Mitochondria are not visible here. They are far too small and transparent. They can be stained with Janus Green, but this can be done with a Dead and fixed one.

    Hola Uriel, tus imágenes también son preciosas. Me encantaría saber más sobre la toma, marca, objetivos, cámara. Ando queriendo mejorar el microscopio, pero como soy autodidacta no encuentro respuesta sobre si acoplarle una cámara de microscopio o una buena de microscopio.......... así como comprar algún objetivo APO etc.
    Tengo otra pregunta sobre el Stentor, es si el núcleo de la célula es el círculo marrón o el transparente.

    Hello Uriel, your images are also beautiful. I would love to know more about the shot, brand, lenses, camera. I'm wanting to improve the microscope, but since I'm self-taught, I can't find an answer on whether to attach a microscope camera or a good microscope.......... as well as buy an APO lens, etc.
    I have another question about the Stentor, and that is whether the core is the brown circle or the clear one.

      Utilizo un Olympus BX50 con objetivos Plan acromáticos y una DSLR Nikon D7100.
      En mi opinión es mejor acoplar una Cámara DSLR o Mirrorless que una cámara dedicada, a menos de que pienses gastar mucho dinero. Aún no he probado objetivos Apo, pero los de Fluorita son muy buenos y en teoría valen mucho la pena.
      Respecto al Stentor, en ésta especie, el núcleo no es ninguno de los que mencionaste. En realidad es el que parece un collar de perlas. Se le llama núcleo moniliforme. El círculo marrón debe ser una vacuola con alimento y el transparente es una vacuola para la osmorregulación.

    Great footage, what’s the microscope please? Trinocular or shot through an adapter connected to one of the ocular mounts?

      It's a binocular Olympus BX50. I use a DSLR on a tripod shooting through the eyepieces. Nowadays I remove the eyepieces for greater FoV and no dust spots.

      Hi. I must say this is sadly not DIC. It is oblique lighting optimized to emulate the Interference Contrast look.

      It was done using oblique lighting and a DSLR. That ensures good contrast and resolution

      Gracias. Los ciliados tienen pelitos en todo el cuerpo y con estos empujan el agua para nadar. Los cilios frontales los utilizan generalmente para comer.

      Since it is a ciliate, it has many tiny hair-like structures on the surface of its body known as Cilia. These have are what move the whole ciliate.

      This is mere speculation, but my best guess is that the polarity of some of the molecules that make up the larger organism are opposite the tiny yellow organism, which caused the repulsion, or maybe it is the mass of the larger one compared to the smaller?

      Hehe. Optics are surely great, but you can improve your own images and video by getting to know the principles of photography and videography, video editing and such. Getting to know the ins and outs of your microscope will help a lot.

      Organelles. The colourful things are ingested algae. The one resembling a bead string is the (Moniliform) Nucleus. The big circle in the middle is a vacuole and the swirily thing is the Adoral Zone of Membranelles, basically fused cilia used to sweep food into the mouth.

      This is a protist. A unicellular eukaryote known as a ciliate. Ciliates have tiny hair-like structures called cilia, which they use to swim, crawl or feed. This particular species is called Stentor coeruleus, known for its blue colour and big size.
