I have had my own experience of being stalked. I was 27 yrs old,a new mother to my only child, and married to my husband for 7 years. I worked as a receptionist for a very well known and large Dr's office (27 Doctors with 150 employees). One of the older married male patients decided that he must have me,take care of my son,buy me my own house blah, blah. I didn't even know this man and he was saying he would leave his wife and his grown children's lives. It was crazzzzyyyy. He went to his vacation home in Mexico with his wife and brought me back all this really good quality jewelry to drop it off with 99 rose bouquet and I love you balloons. I explained to him right in front of my supervisor, one of his treating Dr's who happened to walk by the front check in area and nurse supervisor what was going on. Administration attorneys from the hospital along with the Dr fired this man from the practice and every time I clocked out,I had to have hospital security escorting me to the private enclosed parking garage. Thankfully, he never showed up but it's really scary to have a stalker.

She started off slow, but once Cassandra got the hang of the procedure she turned into a very compelling witness. Prosecution did a good job of indirectly introducing her to the process while on the stand through carefully phrased questions and gently keeping the testimony germane. You could tell the exact moment when Cassandra understood the point of the questioning, after that she only included details that she thought could possibly be relevant. Not an easy task for either of them considering that all the prep work appeared to have happened under oath. Good questions, good answers, it's always nice to see a team come together like that.

His lawyers point is that because she sent him 2 messages that could somehow, maybe, be construed as a se×ual invitation. That it's ok for him to stalk, harass and intimidate her for YEARS and even send her explicit photos? That feels like victim blaming to me.

No, no one blamed the victim.
I'm wondering what everyone else watched and if I watched something different. For me, this man lacked the sophistication to do what many of the commenter are accusing him of. I thought he was actually confused by this woman and, for real, was hopeful she wanted to get back with him. I don't think he is capable of understanding what's really going on as a result of bigger issues he's contending with... issues that have resulted in this 34 year old mans need for a guardian. They didn't give us any back story on this man except when in closing, his attorney made reference to a guardian (but unclear why the need).
I hope he stays away so she can feel safe. He has for the 2 years since the case stated so that's a great indicator. I wish then both well.

I was stalked by my extremely violent ex-husband in spite of a PPO. I drove a school bus with special service children. He even followed my bus and stopped behind me as I dropped my students. My boss even filed charges on him. I made a police report for every incident also. This was in 1991 and laws were different then. I was terrified because he ignored the PPO and even after being locked up I saw him lurking in the shadows just far enough away so he wasn't in violation of the PPO. He wanted me to know he was there, watching me every day. It took several jail stays and moving 4 hours away to get away from him. I had to uproot my 3 children from the school district they had gone to their whole life. They were severely affected too and had to have therapy too. Even after we moved I still looked over my shoulder constantly. My point is that after all that I was still being stalked in my mind even though he wasn't there. It took a long time and a lot of therapy to finally feel safe. The fear doesn't go away so easily. Laws against stalking need to be stiffer to deter contact early on. Especially where DV has occurred.

Gavin DeBecker has a book “the gift of fear” where he discusses working with stalking victims, including strategies to get past it. Sometimes stalkers just need to be starved and they eventually snap out of it and think “what was I doing?”
It’s interesting. It’s almost like a drug addiction, where they need that dopamine hit from making contact to get by. If they get enough of a dry spell, the addiction can be broken. The problem is any activity - even seeing she’s been active online, can give him that dopamine hit, which keeps the cycle going.
If he can sever that connection it’s possible he will be okay, but it’s not easy. At the same time, he’s also a risk to her safety. These issues can still escalate. I hope he gets the help he needs, and in turn leaves her alone so she can move on safely as well.

I'm a retired mental health social worker of both child/adolescent and adults all Level 1 clients; which means the most intensive cases requiring multiple agency involvement.
This case reminds me of 2 male clients that my case manager had and both were Rule 11.
Rule 11 is guilty but mentally incompetent and these adults are
Some background on Client 1 and Client 2.
Client 1 was born to a schizophrenic mother at the State hospital who became pregnant by a male patient at the hospital - also schizophrenic. That's all the information we had on bio parents.
The child was adopted into a loving, upper class home. Father was a doctor, Mother was a social lite.
Client 1 had several Master's degrees.
One night, he lay in wait for his mother and sister to return home from a function in which he planned on killing both. Instead, his father came home first and he was decapitated. His head was placed on the end of the banister as a decoration.
My case manager received a 6-8 page letter from him and the same day received an update from his psych doc at the prison.
The letter started out well; how he had started a newspaper on the unit, taught english classes to fellow inmates, would take runs with his doc around the field.............
Around the 3rd page the letter started becoming disjointed and disturbing. He wanted to date his case manager, invite her over for dinner.........then started describing how he was going to find his mother and sister, cut their heads off and use them for Halloween decorations or something along those lines. The writing itself changed as if several people were writing.
The letter devolved into a mesh of words and graphic drawings of decapitated heads etc.
The 2nd letter from the psych doc was a progress report stating that the patient was doing well. No ideations of murder, no decompensation, lucid thoughts, his accomplishments on the unit, how he helped staff and helped other patients take their meds.......
The doctor stated that within 2 weeks, he was going to give him a weekend pass off the hospital grounds - unsupervised - starting Saturday morning and ending Sunday evening.
My case manager and I put a stop to that real quick.
Client 2 was a stalker of a news anchor woman. He had a PPO - permanent protective order - against him. No contact by any means. Somehow (I believe with help from Client 1) he managed to get this woman's address and send a letter to her. All hell broke loose. My case manager, myself and the company we worked for all got a letter from her lawyer with the threat of civil action.
We finally put a stop to all of it - including putting the psych doc on notice of a law suit and a possible re-exam of his license.
The news woman had to move - address unknown.
My opinion is that a no contact order for the woman in this video is just a bandaid on something far more serious and nefarious. He's had this delusion about this woman for a very long time and I don't believe it will just go away.

🙋retired psychiatric social worker here. You're right, nothing will stop him. As you know, protective orders often anger a stalker to the point where they kill the victim. We had a horrific case here in 🇨🇦 where a schizophrenic man on a Greyhound bus cut the head off a passenger. He was sentenced to time in a forensic psych hospital. Of course, with antipsychotics he improved, seemed 'normal' & his doctors recommended he be released to a half-way house to be gradually 'reintroduced' to communtity living, the goal being eventual full release. 1st thing he'll do, I bet, is go off his meds because in his mind he no longer needs them. There was a public outcry but I've loss track of the story. I worked in 2 maximum security prisons for a while with a panic button on my hip at all times. The killers could be quite charming but I knew they'd slit my throat with a shiv for a cigarette any day. Hope you're enjoying a well-earned retirement.
PS: I live in a horrible nursing home & have my own stalker. I was asked to document how many times she came to my room to harrass me: over 6 months, 300 times! She's been told many she isn't allowed on my unit but it's hopeless. If she had dementia I'd shrug it off but she simply won't follow rules. I'm a "mean" person, she's a "sweet, gental soul". She was hideous to me & my dear husband when he died a cruel death here from Parkinsons, dementia, & bipolar disorder. This place just can't/won't protect me. I've had 2 TIAs this year, was briefly blind from them, I just spent a week in hospital for emergency surgery after an infected knee replacement went septic. Came back to this woman at my door again tonight. A fed-up PSW said I should ask police for an Order of Protection, maybe it would wake her up & also the managment here. My greatest fear is a full stroke & helplessness in this so-called Care Home.

I'm glad I saw this video. I've definitely done things that border on stalking and harassing in the past, just from not being able to move on, and sometimes under the influence. I'm glad and a little embarrassed this helped open my eyes. 😮

Look how he's watching the screen. This is so creepy. I went through the same thing with my ex-husband just no lights on when you're telling them they no longer matter to you. The obsession is deeply dangerous. I had to have a TPO as well

yeah......he's stoned out of his mind! And a danger to her. This goes beyond "not getting it."

Judge Simpson should have made him remove his head condom. It reminded me of that scene in Raising Arizona... "Son, you got a panty on your head."

A mentally unstable, drug addicted, stalker. . . Isn’t that the recurring definition of a Murderer?!?

Judge Simpson is so compassionate. He wanted to protect the victim and the man who very clearly had mental issues. He found a way and hopefully both parties will be safe.
