    I have an aluminum bass boat, that dull grey metallic hull blends in well; especially when its windy or cloudy. Yeah, I think bass are quite aware of the environment around them including boats.

    When I used to scuba dive, when you are below the boat looking upwards, you can only see the shape of the boat not color against the sky. The boat is a dark contrast shape against a very bright sky. But, I do think color may have some effect. This is what my human eyes saw. I wished I knew what various species of fish saw.
    My current boat is a Ranger Aluminum boat. I often think about the sound of waves lapping against the sides making constant tapping noises. The wave action noise can get loud. I feel this noise could alert the bass of your presence. I try to aim the bow into the wind to lessen the wave noise. I think fiberglass boats have an advantage here in dampening the wave action noises.

    I fish structure in clear lakes. A favorite trick of mine is to position my boat close to one side of a hump or point and cast across to the opposite side. I am using the underwater terrain to hide behind. I know that you don’t approve of spotlighting, but when used in this situation the percentage of fish that strike goes up dramatically. Yes you can see fish that are “just under the horizon”

    I painted mine brown over 20 years ago. Also, painted some limbs and knot holes for realism like a log. When you pull up to the bank, the fish get under it, I guess they think its a log.

    It makes perfect sense. Ive often thought a very light grey, or even light blue would be the best. Look like the sky, or a cloud. Best boat color Ive had was an Xpress x19 painted in a dull silver.I even took all the logo's off the side. Im convinced it makes a big difference. I fish Center Hill and Dale Hollow a lot. It makes a huge difference here in Tennessee.

      I have a catfish pond that’s fenced in. I feed them daily in and isolated area on the opposite side of the pond from where the gate is and by the time I get to the gate, that’s a good 30 yards from the water, the water looks like it’s boiling inside the feeder area. When the chain on the gate clangs they explode. I’m sure bass can also sense what is happening in a similar way.

    Have a friend with a nice size pond, several acres. It's beautiful, river rock all around, nice sandy beach. Really deep but super clear water. I've spent fair amount of time walking the banks, studying the schools of bass and they're watching me, and following me. If you walk up and spook them, stand still and sure enough they come back. For the record, they've never been hand fed. They are like stray cats if you've fed them, come from everywhere.
    So I can totally see how this could be a thing. Camo would be perfect if you are backdropped by treeline or high terrain. A cool test would be a printed clouds on a vinyl wrap?

    As a 41 year degreed scientist when someone uses the word "study" that evokes a very specific set of circumstances and protocols that need to be followed which, from your explanation have not been followed in this instance.. I won't bore everyone with all the requirements which have not been met in this case but a simple summary is that you are trying to answer a question (does bass boat color affect bass ..?" That has 10-20 or more different variables but you only have 2 or 3 equations to solve it. As anyone who has taken high school algebra knows, in order to solve this you need the same number of equations as variables. You are trying to determine if a black or white hull is better but all the other variables that go into catching a fish change every time you go fishing and you have not eliminated them. Was the Sun brightness and angle exactly the same every time? Was the weather exactly the same? Water clarity? Water depth? Current? Type of lure? Etc, etc, etc, etc ..... I have no doubt that your records show exactly what you claim wrt fish catches but it is literally impossible (from a scientific perspective at least) to conclude that your boat color was a primary reason for the results you saw . Bass fishing is one endeavor where folks love to draw conclusions from sample sizes of one or two or connect things that can't be proven as connected ... we call these opinions not "studies". Here's another thing to consider .... for your conclusion to be valid, all the fish you caught would need to have been close enough to the boat to be able to see it so are you saying that all the fish you caught were in gin clear water so that they could see the boat no matter how far your cast was?

      Well, scientist say bass have no blue eye cones, so are blue boats invisible ??

    • @astrophysicistguy
      @astrophysicistguy 3 місяці тому

      @@markwarren3535 not invisible, they simply can't distinguish between blue, black and brown. Those. Lots all look the same to them. Same thing goes for white and chartreuse. Studies prove conclusively those. Odors look the same to them as well. If you want to follow the science vice just unsupported YT opinion then all you need for colors are greens, reds, dark colors and light colors, that's it. Thee is also some evidence that bass can see in the UV spectrum like some birds and a few other animals and so the bait companies that offer the "UV plastic baits" might be worth a look.. this is like the debate about what color your frog should be - unless you think bass have x-ray vision they can't see what color a bait is that is sitting on the surface of the water so you can paint your frogs hot pink and yellow on top and it won't make a hill of beans to them. Remember, the Earth is not flat (NASA has checked), we did land on the moon, chem trails are not a thing, vaccines work and most of what you hear on bass fishing YT channels are just unsupported opinions with not a single ounce of science

    • @coasterbrookie
      @coasterbrookie 3 місяці тому +1

      I think it would be more wise to state “ In my opinion a lighter colored hull is less intrusive than a darker colored hull”. And then go on to express why you are of this opinion. It’s not a “study “mainly because there are too many variables involved that are not able to be quantified specifically. This is all very anecdotal. It doesn’t involve the eight disciplines of engineering. I do understand the influence and reasoning behind his opinion but again it’s not technically a study.

    Wouldn't it also make sense to paint several small schools of bait fish on the bottom as well?
    I mean if they look up and see that, wouldn't it make them want to chase them or at least lurk around in hopes of some coming down?
    At the very least they would try to attack and knock themselves out hitting the boat🤔😂

    I've always fished a galvanized hull. The secret to shallow water fishing is not hull color, it's stealth. Any water less than 6 foot deep I'll use a push pole. Never and I mean never use your trolling motor in shallow water. Also keep the noise down . Don't drop rods or take boxes onto the deck. I've caught more fish than I can count with stealth fishing.

    Not sure I buy it. It makes sense theoretically, but I had a light grey (almost white) hull, then a black hull, and it didn’t change my catch ratio at all. Might have had something to do with depth and water clarity, I rarely fished clear water, but it had no impact on my ability to catch fish. I do believe it to an extent, but I can’t prove it.

  • @michaeldavis1369

    I have fished in every hull imaginable throughout the years in gin clear water deep and partially stained water. Ironically my best has been in my black hull I've had. Seems just the opposite from the video. But for me I think its just has to do with adapting to your fishing situation and becoming a better angler. Fish are always aware of boats on our high pressure lakes and I think if your hull is black vs white,brown grey or tan I don't think it makes a difference. My hull is Blake with siler sparkle and a lime green stripes and I catch more now than ever before . I think its just getting better at fishing and I put up 25lb sacks very often. Plus I can catch 20 -50 2lb bass in a day regularly too in highly pressured water. And according to this video my hull means that its a horrible choice. I don't buy it

    Studies have shown that Bass see in incredibly good detail. In most animals with binocular vision which bass do have, it is immensely helpful to break up patterns and understand the color rods and what they actually see. I will, without question buy a white bottom boat next time. A lot a
    Of validity to this theory.look at White sharks. Dark on top to camp against the bottom but white on the belly to silhouette against the sun and surface. My only question is why some bass would be that spookish and others swim right up within 5’ of my boat at the surface in 10’ plus water visibility and stop and setup in a lay down without giving me second look. These fish aren’t near a marina or docks where they are conditioned to boats. They are in freakin’ BFE in areas where they will see pressure. Now, our lakes in NE Oklahoma aren’t pressured like Lake Fork but they are pretty hammered

    I bought a Sky Camo. colored Nu Canoe for that reason it seems like Bass look up and they would see a sky color. The biggest difference I noticed was fish would bite closer to the boat. But paddling was all the power I had and no graph ticking. It was big fun when a big one would pull me around. Now I have a Red Glass boat and it seems like when the fish get close instead of biting they're turning away. I'm considering a Blue camo. wrap. Isn't Red one of the colors Bass can see well? Doug Hannon like Ricky Clunn was one of the deep thinkers in our sport and it's interesting that he was such a simple fisherman.

    • @travistweedle9674

      Red is one of the first colors in the spectrum to disappear underwater. Here is a quote from the interweb from Scuba Divers - "You've noticed how colors change when diving to different depths, but did you know that red disappears at less than 15 feet? Following our colors of the rainbow, orange is next at around 25 feet, yellow at 35, green at 65, and finally blue is absorbed at around 200 feet." Not sure what this means for a fishes colors but a red craw crankbait at 15-25 ft isn't looking how you think it is looking that's for sure.

    What colors do bass see, are fish colorblind? I know fishers who swear to red hooks etc.. Learning to fish on trout creeks in northern Michigan my uncle would tell me walk softly don’t let your rod or anything cast a shadow on the water etc. Now I wade those creeks and think I catch more than back then, but also have better tackle and cover more water. We had wood boats when I was a kid which are pretty quiet but the adults made us whisper when talking and be still as possible. Now people are roaring around with 200 plus engines etc. wondering where the fish are. I think kayak fisherpeople catch many more fish than motor boat folks👍
