  • Context:
Series 1: Original TiVo boxes. Around December 1998 and January 1999, TiVo was working very hard to release their first DVR for "Q1 1999". It also happened to be a blue moon. This is the story behind the blue moon holiday that TiVo employees have. They released these first DVRs with an ability to simply not record commercials. This feature triggered several lawsuits directed at TiVo.
Series 2: The height of TiVo's popularity growth (I think)
DirecTV: TiVo releases a DVR that can receive signals from DirecTV. After a few years, DirecTV stopped supporting MPEG-2 signals, rendering the DirecTV TiVos obsolete.
Series 3.0: (TiVo HD) These DVRs were the first to support HD video
Series 3.1: All I can make a joke about is that it has more buttons and screens on the front than any other TiVo.
Series 4.0: TiVo Premiere. TiVo's first "Smart DVR" which can stream from various online services
DirecTV return: TiVo allies with DirecTV again, but I don't think re-adoption was this enthusiastic.
TiVo Preview: A small set-top box which is basically a DVR without a hard drive which talks to a real DVR to record its things. It was never released.
Series 4.1: TiVo Premiere XL4 and Elite. The first DvR to use Multimedia over Coaxial Alliance, or MoCA. This allows DVRs to exchange data with the same cable that gives it the TV signal. It is only designed to work between DVRs in the same house
TiVo Mini: Small set-top boxes that allow you to view things on your main DVR around the house. The TiVo Stream is basically a small Wi-Fi box that lets you watch TV on your smartphone or tablet or laptop
Series 5.0: TiVo Roamio. The first to use the Remote Finder feature. If you lose the remote, you can press a button on the box that makes the remote play a jingle so you can find it.
Series 6.0: TiVo Bolt. 4k is now supported and the box has a bent shape. TiVo also changed their logo, removing the face of the TiVo character. The TiVo Bolt did not support HDR at launch though.
Rovi merger: Rovi Corp bought TiVo Inc and renamed themselves TiVo Corp. However, a consequence of this merger was that TiVo had to switch from Gracenote's TV guides to Rovi's TV guides. TiVo made software updates that switched the sources of the guides. The original TiVo boxes never had these updates, and had their services discontinued.
TiVo Mini 4k: Like the TiVo Mini, but can support 4k resolution.
TiVo 2017 UI: The most drastic change in TiVo User Interface (UI) in the history of TiVo.
Series 6.1: TiVo Bolt Vox and TiVo Voice Remote can be given voice commands.
Are you reading all of this? I am amazed, considering the video is 2 minutes long.
