An old friend back in high school made me a mix CD with this song on it. I’ve been looking for this song since 2016. I hate the re-recorded version the original is perfect

Why? I personally prefer the maple leaves thing. The mark e smith line sounds funny but the idea of replacing the word make believe with just this calming innocuous symbol is like superior imo.
@@gwendeseminat8rthey are both good lost in translation/misunderstanding lines. Jens is so wonderful. People who love The Fall are particularly enchanted by the mention of Mark. It’s also special because of how foreign this song is from Mark’s music. Both artists are fantastic but so different which reminds us of our capacity to align with different fractals of brilliance.
This is total brilliance. I can't even fathom how I could live without ever hearing this song. Such great vibes. Sort of lifts you off your feet and transports you to such a time you never knew ever to exist. Such brilliance.
I'll lose my mind completely. Madness will finally defeat me. The lyrics give me chills, in a sad & happy way because it's a story of a lad who fell for a girl who was too insecure to love him back/be comfortable in her own skin but at least he got to experience those precious moments with her anyhow. Le sigh.
I like how Jens dismisses this as a ‘lazy Avalanches ripoff.’ This is one of my favorite songs ever; I love Avalanches but this song reaches a level of beautiful melancholy that transcends not only music, but space and time as well. Pure masterwork. This song could be sent into space to show any potential life out there the heights of perfection that human art has achieved.
withtheglassesandthe i always thought this was always so sad (the miscommunication in between the two) but he does it so clever it makes you almost smirk as you relate
So we talked for hours and you cried into my sheets you said you hated your body that it was just a piece of meat, I disagreed I think you're beautiful but it's impossible to make you understand that if you don't take my hand I lose my mind completely Madness will finally defeat me :\
Unfortunately the original versions have been pulled from streaming services due to sampling rights issues. The original CDs and UA-cam are the only way to listen to those original tracks now

Yes 😢
The "when she talked about a fall, I thought she talked about Mark E. Smith" line has to be one of my favourite lyrics of all time.
Hell yes

Got me into the fall around 2005 and still one of my favorite bands
My thoughts exactly !

this song changed my life in 2005. listening to it now, over 12 years later... still beautiful, melancholy, and you can dance to it. fuck yeah
Richey Rose same
I'm right with you there
Absolutely. Just been digging through old tracks I used to listen to and came across this one. Takes me straight back.
Piece of nostalgia that still sounds great. This is the only song off the new record that I strongly prefer this older version of
Oh God I found the new version on Spitify and I was like OMG WHY IS IT SO SLOW? I still vastly prefer this version.
Fun fact: this song charted on the official Swedish singles chart, peaking at #11
the #10 song at that time was Bring Me To Life by Evanescence.

The best use of sampling this side of Paul's Boutique
It's one of those songs where you're happy where you are when you listen to it.
Adrian Madrigal he's great for happy music with tragic lyrics

I thank God for this song every day
I listen to The Fall a lot, and every once in a while I'm reminded that I want to hear this song.
Jens is absolutely amazing. There is no other

This song made me believe in love again...12 years later........please God bring re-leaf even if it is only brief.

Just.. what an absolute gem..
This is amazing, and the Mark E. Smith reference just makes it perfect!

Saw this Jens Lekman @paradiso this week and totally loved this song!
Maybe may favorite song of all time.

so fuckin beautiful ... because you can dance and cry at the same time...
YAAAY! The first one! =D
What can I say? I ABSOLUTELY love this song.
I found this sound 2006 or something because of some indie wave... thank you soo much for those timeless lines @jenslekman.

This is the only song that makes my 9 month old sleep. Why?
The lyrics are both hilarious and sad
That's Jens in a nutshell
Jens prefaced a Swedish translation of this song by saying "When I tried to be serious people laughed, and when I tried to make a joke people cried"

@smithsmoz17 I still agree with you. xD Took the words out of my mouth~
Spaceballs sample, FTW!
Does anyone know what he sampled that drum line from?
Is it sampled? It'd sound great in a Hip-hop song.
A little late, but its sampled and inspired by a song of The Avalanches, calles Since I Lefted You
Oh, a little late, but I found it. It's from "I'm Gonna Make You Mine" (1968?) by The American Breed
Is there really a 7 inch release of this song??? Not just a CD version?
My bet: Half of the people commenting on the brilliance of the Mark E Smith line had to Google the name before they understood it.
I've been there before...
Props MegaTour 3
Kinda bumbed. I don't think Jens will ever write another song this good.
Reminds me of Morrissey and Martin L. Gore...
so when she talked about the fall
she was talking about her menstruation
That main string riff comes from The Mamas And The Papas "Do You Wanna Dance".
