Why would you even dare metal detect that area? That is considered sacred ground where men had their final moments in life? I would highly recommend leaving that area alone with a metal detector! It's honestly like metal detecting the Titanic site it's desecrating a grave site in my opinion. I understand keeping these men's stories alive for history but digging up the plane parts and wreckage is something different.

This story never needs to die with time. These pilots gave everything to keep everyone else safe. When he said that part about the pilot waving back at the school boy it really touched me and I'm definitely going to make it a point to go out to the site and pay my respects!

The work that went into the design and building of it came from the hearts of the people that worked on it. Thanks to JD for making this GEM for us to view. NOTE: In (Part One) at 17:26, the dog tag for Philip Niewolke shows a address for his home, 301 Lake Shore Dr Dunkirk N.Y. The house is still there, it's a blue house with white trim.

In 1962 a B-52 crashed on elephant mountain near Greenville Maine. My grandfather ran a bulldozer to build a road to get to the crash site. There is still a lot of wreckage there. Not long ago they found a seat! You never know when or where you’ll find relics. A shame there isn’t a memorial like this for the flyers that died there on that cold winter night.

That whole story is very moving, knowing these guys were trained and ready to face bullets and flak over Europe and Germany. That never got that chance to help their fellow man. But they have done more than they knew. Just signing up to go to war was enough. And that’s why the whole tribute J.D is right to have on film now. Your carrying their memory’s on these two videos. 🙏🏻👍🏻

I can't believe how similar this story is to my own in my family. My uncle Edward was killed in a B-17 while on a training exercise in Montana in August of 1943. He was only 20 years old. My dad was a boy of 11 years and never forgot his big brother. In 1998 my dad visited the crash site where the B-17 in a thunderstorm went down. While walking in the crater picking up airplane pieces he found his brother's dog tag. This prompted my dad to begin researching all the men who died in that crash and he found family members. Years later he had a monument made with contributions from family members and friends and it was shipped to Jordan Montana where it stands today. I was there for the dedication in 2010. My uncle was an excellent artist and on the front of the monument with all the young men's names is a drawing of a B-17 that my uncle drew and sent home in a letter to his parents. My dad died in 2020 of covid and he's missed every single day. He would have been so interested in this story of these young men that lost their lives tragically during WWII, so much like his beloved brother. Great channel..please continue with the awesome content.

Beautifully done. One of your best episodes yet. For what it's worth, that insignia shown at 13:28 is the cap badge from an Army Air Force aviation cadet visor cap, not pilot wings. They would have been worn on the cap until a cadet won his actual pilot's wings and received his commission as an officer upon graduation.

Enjoyed it JD! One of the airmen was from a town about 25 miles from me. Porterville, Ca. Small rural country town back in the 40s.

When I was in college, I worked at a summer camp up in the Colorado Rockies (adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park) and we had a regular hike up to the crash site of a B-17 in WWII. It is a somber reminder of the price of those who serve.
