    =======================
    The Nimitz Class Carriers are the main backbone of America's ability to project power anywhere in the world. The Nimitz is powered by two nuclear pressurized water reactors and carries an assorted air wing of 85 Fighter/Attack Jets, Anti-Submarine aircraft, Airborne Early Warning Planes and also retains several SH-60B Sea Hawk Helicopters for Search and Rescue and ASW duties.The Nimitz has a whopping 97,000 tons of displacement and its length is approximately three football fields. Since the first Nimitz Class Carrier, The USS Nimitz (CVN-68), entered service in May 1975 there have been nine other Nimitz Class Carriers produced. The Nimitz made its first combat cruise during the ill-fated Operation Eagle Claw. The Nimitz Class has since proven itself in operations in Iraq, the former Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan. At current projections, The Last Nimitz is not scheduled to be retired till the year 2058, at which point the last of the Nimitz will have been fully replaced by the Gerald R. Ford Class.

    I see my old squadron and sister squadron in this video. The planes with the checkerboard were the sister squadron to VF-24 Fighting Renegades, called VF-211 Fighting Checkmates. VF24's plane looks like it is at the 2:56 mark.

    I was aboard the USS Never Imagined Myself In This Zoo aka Nimitz CVN-68 in 1993 as part of Westpac '93 attached to VF24 Fighting Renegades based out of NAS Miramar. Oh how I miss that BIG ship. LOL. :) 6 months of seeing other parts of the world, and memories of how I could sleep through flight ops when I was not on my duty station on board.

    Actually US has 11!
    The thing that scares me the most, is that these super carriers are powered by a nuclear reactor and has UNLIMITED range, refueling around every 10 years. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Especially these days its not easy obtaining an air base in a neighbouring country when conflict breaks out. Its just so much cheaper and easier to take your own land(carrier) with you :) And you dont allways need a submarine and destoryer etc for carrier protection unless your invading a regional power. Presence of the carrier itself can be enough to deter the enemy. 80+ aircraft just off your shore sends a huge message.

    @texasrangersr1 The Ticonderoga class cruisers will be replaced by the Flight III Arleigh Burke class destroyers.
    The Virgina class attack submarines are to replace the aging Los Angeles and Seawolf class submarines when it is time to decommission the LA and Seawolf. We have 7 Virginia class in commisssion with 1 in awaiting commission in October 2011.
    So yeah, we are pretty advanced

    @renegadebiker24, unless you were a pilot in the 80's you know that if you turned the wrong way the engine could have stalled. Still the death of the F-14 could be attributed to Dick Cheney when as defense Secretary he didn't renew the contracts for the F-14 and wanted those retired.

  • @renegadebiker24
    @renegadebiker24 14 років тому

    @boomerkid1 -- Yep, you are right, however, I was in an F-14 squadron, and even though the F-14 may not fly anymore is because they are outdated, There will not be another aicraft like Tomcat that can handle the AIM-54 Phoenix Missile. The Phoenix Missile can only be carried by the F14 Tomcat.

  • @redmustang03
    @redmustang03 14 років тому

    @renegadebiker24, so were you a pilot, a RIO, or part of the crew. Until the Super Hornet came along, that was the best Navy plane for the US. I mean it could track up to six different targets, handle the long range Phoenix, had a long radar range and could fly further than the Hornets. The disadvantage was it was heavy, more parts, a bitch to repair, and the engined was underpowered until the upgrade in the 90's. I mean the Top Gun scene where the F-14 stalled in the Jet Wash was common.

  • @Greendude33

    @wowspare Wrong, first of all the Hull's armor is at it's thickest below water and not only that but the detection systems and anti Submarine torpedos can detect any enemy sub before the sub can detect the carrier. The US Navy hands down leads the way in naval warfare technology.
    Also in country's with subs the USN would bring submarines and destroyers as support to protect the carrier.

    While i agree that these things are pretty much the be all and end all of sea power, for me ( and its just an opinion so dont flame me) The Akula class Submarine ( SSBN , Nato reporting name Typhoon) Is easily the most menacing thing out there. Especialy considering it carries up to 20 ICBMs each of wich have 12-16 Nuclear warheads. Pluss it just LOOKS mean. Scariest looking boat in the world ( in my opinion)

  • @TuAFFalcon
    @TuAFFalcon 14 років тому

    I thought they had 10 total. Ye they have "unlimited range" but i dont know about the 10 yr period. That wont matter since it will have to make stops for food and bombs :) Even if it was every year would be plenty. How many months worth of food can they carry?

  • @vegass04

    Obsolesence of aircraft carriers is beautifully summed up in billions that are invested by PLAN in their carrier capabilities and wishfull spending of billions that Russia would like to have to invest in their own super carriers. Aircraft carriers have always evolved and adapted to changing circumstances in a war arena. This mobile airbases will rule supreme for century to come.

    The UK did not lose in America in any military matter . Yes they lost some battles .they pulled out for other reasons .
    Not because the Americans had a bigger or better army . They never had an army to say , just a large rebel force but not an army .
    They pulled out cause at the same time they were also fighting the French , Spanish , Germans. and still increasing there colonies .
    So they had the balls to fight you cowboys and the rest of the world and they still won so to speak.
