  • At long last! The Monkees’ 1968 concert in Japan - demixed, edited and rebuilt from the ground up to present in a manner never heard before.
Nearly all instances of the announcers talking over portions of the concert have been removed to form a singular, cohesive performance from start to finish. Enjoy!

Sounds so much better than before! All the talking over the performances really took the attention away from the concert.

Thanks for posting this! This is the best I've ever heard the Monkees live. Too bad that Peter left only about a month after this was recorded. My personal favorite, Cuddly Toy at 9:56. Written by Harry Nilsson. Both Davy's lead vocals and the backing vocals are heavenly. I also wish someone would find the video of this show. It was aired in Japan, but the video has been lost :(

This amazing. From the sound of it these guys put on an amazing live show. I think that's where they really shined. I'm jealous of all the lucky people who got to see them as this time. I hope someday we can get video of this amazing concert. Thanks so much for sharing the audio :)

Then producing a physical release, and the costs of that. All for what would be a treat for hardcore Monkees fans, but likely a low return compared to the costs. Not to say that wouldn't be cool though!

I also liked them better than the Beatles, but the Beatles were before my time really. I was 4 when they were on the Ed Sullivan show. I did not know what a Beatle or Ed Sullivan was at the time! :) But musically they were not anywhere as good as the Beatles. The only one of them of that was instrumentally as good as any of the Beatles was Peter Tork, who played about 7 instruments very well. Mickey and Mike have all said over the years that they were not technically real good on their instruments. keep in mind that bands like The Beatles and others were musical groups from the ground up. They all had a similar interest in music and formed groups and played live and in studios making records. That is what they wanted to do when they grew up! lol The Monkees would have never met if it was not for the TV show. They were hired as actors to play musicians and they were never a real group in the same way as The Beatles, Byrds, etc. Great job on this by the way. I have also wished that somebody would make a pro version of this concert but this is the next best thing!

@@cranstonsnord4334 What you said. I grew up during the heydays of both bands and was a huge fan of both. For the reasons you very well articulated, the two groups can’t really be compared musically. Remember, when we are listening to (most) Monkees albums/songs, we are hearing relatively minimal musical Input from them individually and a tremendous amount of performances by some of the best session musicians of the time, performing songs written by some of the best pop composers of the time. And it’s often not discussed, but the Monkees’ live performances were usually augmented by sidemen. Both the Beatles and the Monkees were important contributors to the 60s pop music evolution, but they represented two completely separate approaches, so I don’t think “who’s better” comparisons really apply.

Interesting that Nez' numbers, "You Just May Be the One" and "Sunny Girlfriend" were cut from the TV program, especially after hearing Peter say in 1997 that when they played "Sunny Girlfriend" in Osaka it was a great concert moment for the band!!!

It is! I've always heard that in Japan the highest compliment they can give is to sit quietly and listen, then applaud at the end. That's what happened in 1966 when the Beatles played there and they thought the crowd didn't like them!

Demixing technology exists today. You can teach AI algorithms to identify different instruments and have it separate them in individual tracks, although it's not perfect. It's what was used by Percy Jackson in the new Beatles Get Back documentary. It's a relatively new technology and it's only gonna get better with time and as computers get more powerful.
