- In this review, I'm going to take a look at a beer from the Weyerbacher Brewing Company (@weyerbacherbrewing2765), and it's their Merry Monks. This is a Belgian-style Tripel that I've had before, but it's been a long time because their distribution to the Buffalo, NY area has dried up over the past five years. I never loved this one, as I'm typically not a Belgian Tripel fan, but I wanted to revisit it, so here we are. Let's see how it is!
Commercial Description:
Merry Monks, 9.3% ABV, is a Belgian-style Tripel. Pilsner malt combined with an Abbey yeast strain yields a remarkable and complex flavor packed with notes of spice, banana and pear. Nicely balanced with a moderate to dry finish.

Thanks for watching!
~~~ I have an INSANITY resting in the cellar, that I picked up in Ohio last year. 15 years ago, I would get together with a buddy who lived over in Rockledge and we had beer tastings once a month. Usually the last beer of the night would be INSANITY. Started as a beer and finished like a brandy. Luckily he had a guest room LOL. I remember always enjoying this beer. Nice review. CHEERS !! ))))))
That is a fantastic story, Gregory! I miss Insanity, man. I'm hoping we get that soon, as it seems that Weyerbacher is back in the state. Who knows, but here's hoping! I've always found their beer to be quite enjoyable. This was way better than I remember, haha! Thanks, brother!
Cheers!
I am suddenly seeing Weyerbacher in NE NY State...good stuff...
That is awesome, dude! I've seen them at a few different stores now. Pretty wild.
Cheers, Fraser!
Dang, major throwback! Don’t think I’ve had this brew since around when I turned 21 (about 9 years ago). Definetly gotta revisit, this is a classic! I agree, noticed Weyerbacher kinda just disappeared. Been seeing them around a little bit again lately. Cheers!🍻 🎉
No doubt, dude! I'm so happy that they seem to be back on their feet. I hope I see their Insanity at some point. One of my favorites, and it's been far too long!
Cheers again, homie!
Agreed, when I was younger my preference was towards a Belgian Dark Strong or Quadrupel but as I get older a Tripel appeals to me more, Lachesis by Tartarus this year was super delicious.
Dude, that is great to hear! It's wild how different my palate is from not only 10 years ago, but a few years ago. Love it, though. Thoroughly enjoy revisiting these styles that I never seemed to enjoy. That Lachesis sounds tasty!
Cheers, Christopher!
They do a great tour at their Easton, Pa brewery. This is a classic. Cheers!
I still want to get there and Troegs. Someday, for sure!
Cheers!
Sounds like a good one. I style I enjoy but rarely think to get. Pretty cool how much your palate has changed over the years. It’s funny how that happens.
It really was a damn good representation of the style, IMO. Don't remember it being that good. Might have to seek out more Tripels to see if it's official that I enjoy 'em, haha! It's definitely wild how much your palate can change. Love it, though.
Cheers, Curtis!
I think Tiny is fantastic. Hopefully you will agree!
I had it like 10 years ago and enjoyed it. You don't see many Belgian-style Imperial Stouts, so I'm excited to revisit it!
Cheers, man!
Belgian Tripel is a fine style that I have no issue with but I never had this one. In the style, Victory Golden Monkey has to be the one I have had the most because its the most accessible here. I probably need to get the Allagash Tripel at some point because I definitely have come across it.
Allagash Tripel is good. For American-brewed Tripels, Golden Monkey is probably the golden standard. It's crazy how they've opened up the series to a bunch of different beers that don't resemble the original beer, but the name sells, I guess. You know what is insane? I haven't reviewed Golden Monkey, only because I can't find it. I can get every other variation except the OG. Stupid.
Cheers, buddy!
@@averagejoe716 Thats very shocking that you cant get Golden Monkey. Here its in 6 packs, stovepipe cans, its everywhere.
Btw Victory White Monkey. It was aged in white wine barrels amd was only sold in bombers but it was over 20 bucks so I never picked it up when I saw it. Of course I regret it now thats its long gone.
To be fair, I can probably find it if I look hard enough, but Sour Monkey and Berry Monkey are always on the shelves. I haven't seen the OG in a hot minute. Need to grab it the next time I see it, though.
I loved White Monkey. Split that 750 ml bottle with a friend. I also enjoyed their Red Thunder, which was a red wine barrel-aged Baltic Porter, I believe. Tasty beer!
15 IBU? That is really low!? Normally, a stronger Tripel has at least 30 or 40 IBU, and it needs that much or more, for balance and drinkability. And for me, Belgian Tripel is one of my favorite styles!
Definitely seems low, for sure, but that substantial dryness really helped the drinkability here. I would've liked to see a bit more bitterness, but despite the low IBU rating, it was still delicious!
Cheers, Tobias!
I'm having a brain 🧠 fart moment aka senior moment 😅 can't think of anything to say so in closing cheers 🍻
LMAO! I'm not sure that's a senior moment, as it happens to me a ton. Totally understand. Always appreciate your support and comments, Billy. Hope it's cooling down in your area, buddy!
Cheers!
I am considering drinking a Tripel tonight and decided to watch this video before hand. I have not seen Weyerbacher in my area in a long time. I hope the tripel I drink tonight is as good as this one......it was not. Way too over the top carbonated.
Ah, that sucks! Tripels aren't easy to brew, which is probably why you don't see a lot of them in the US. Sorry to hear that, man. This was quite tasty ... and that's coming from someone who doesn't love the style. If you see it, give it a go. I think it's worth a shot!
Cheers, man!
