  • This is the first Grow-along video in a series for this year! I will be posting multiple videos for both cut flowers and glads. In this video I share how to start both snapdragons and feverfew from seed. In future video I will be giving updates on all the growalong seedlings and then showing how to plant them outside!

I'm in Australia so opposite seasons to you, but l watched a video about starting seed on moist paper towel & covered with cling wrap, so l tried it with Saponaria & also thought l would see if it worked for Snaps. I did this inside under lights ( just cheap led's) & It worked really well for both & l have transferred with fine forceps to trays. So far they are doing well. I like this method because you can see the seeds that have germinated & you don't have to waste space & seed raising mix on one's that don't germinate. Plus it's just fun to be able to see the germination taking place & quite long roots going off into the paper towel. Very early days yet though.

I’ll be using a paper towel and baggie for my bells of Ireland this week!

I wish I had waited to order my seeds from you this year; you offered a fantastic selection. Yes, please show us plant spacing and which varieties you use support netting with. Thanks.

I'll be starting these tmrw! I wanted to actually grow with you even though I'm in 7b. I hadn't looked at the seeds, I'm SO glad they are pelleted! This'll be fun to grow with others!

I've been learning so much from all of your videos! I have a large perennial garden but you've inspired me to put in some cut flower beds this spring. I'm in Northern RI - zone 6a, so similar growing season to you and just started my first seed trays. I'm so excited! I was wondering when you start bottom watering the seed trays? Do you wait until they are mostly germinated or start right after you plant the seeds? I've been misting them once or twice a day so far. Thank you! I'm so looking forward to watching all your videos throughout this growing season!

Thanks for watching! After the seeds have all germinated and they are off the heat mats, then I bottom water them

Do the seedlings get enough light to grow, do you need to raise them closer to the light? Great video 😊

They are fine. Sometimes if you lower them too much the middle section of the seed tray is actually a little dark. I raise them just to the point where that isn’t the case. These are 5500 lumens

Plugs of those things coming for this old flower hippie. But if I plant the plugs and then the grow along seeds ..maybe I can do a succession planting that way? I've had some bells in my freezer for awhile..plus have seeds coming from Floret. Will try that paper towel method with you!. When do the bells bloom for you; and what other blooms are ready to put with them?

I’ve never grown them before so I don’t really know! 😊

Hi Christina, thanks so much for your videos! They are fantastic and i love your attention to providing detail! Forgive me if you mentioned, but at what stage, if any are you fertalizing your snapdragons? Any other cut flowers you recommend fertilizing? I'm new to this and I'm growing snaps, zinnias, sunflowers, yarrow, feverfew, calendula, stock, strawflowers, dara, bells of ireland, celosia, and more, but that's enough! Thanks so much from Nicky in zone 9a/b in Victoria BC.

Anything I start from seeds i start fertilizing once they have a couple sets of leaves. I do half strength once a week. Hope that helps!

This is my second year gardening and my first year with flowers. I am in zone 9b with my last frost date being 2/15. Am I too late to do the grow a long?

Last year I had great germination on my snapdragon seeds but a ton of them sprouted where the seed never came off. Does this mean the seed wasn't wet enough? I am starting to see the same issue with my snapdragons this season too. Any tips? I don't seem to have this issue with any other seeds. (My goal this year is to get to plant at least one happy snapdragon outside. Last year I managed to kill every single one! 🙃🤦‍♀️. I think i overwatered the seedlings). Lol! Any suggestions are appreciated!

Usually if I have that happen it falls off? Maybe try wetting them more?

All you have to do is get the seed a little wet with your finger and wiggle it off. It should be fine.
