I love your vintage sheet Jelly Sticks quilt. I'm sure I had a set like what you have that were percale and we got for a wedding gift in 1976. They wore like iron and were great sheets. Wish I would have kept some of them!

Working with what you have should be a motto for everyone. Rulers are expensive. I appreciate you telling us that we should work with what we have. Great Advice. My oldest ruler is the lip ruler also. I purchased it in the late 90's. Please give Tiggs a hug for us.

They are expensive! With rulers, I do think it's a good idea to give it some thought and decide it if it's something you'll end up putting to good use before you purchase it. With my Stripology ruler (because that's a very expensive one) a friend loaned me one so I could try it out for awhile. That was so nice to see if it was something I was going to reach for and use often.

The right tool for the job is my motto. My time is valuable; fabric is expensive. I buy tools for my sewing the way that I buy tools in the kitchen or for working on my home. What is going to save me time, money, materials and effort and give me an excellent outcome. I see people go around their elbow to get to their nether regions to avoid buying a ruler, and see them wasting time and fabric.

@@notesfromleisa-land If I were selling quilts, or made them professionally for others, I agree. However, I make quilts for friends and family and I think they would understand if something was not Blue Ribbon Beautiful. You are right, fabric is very expensive and your time is valuable. I just have to go with the flow, and I can make it work no matter what. Thank you for your insight, I appreciate it. God Bless You.

Amen to that! I appreciate businesses making money, but I remember years ago always being told we needed the latest 'new thing' and rulers were always the constant change. They're expensive! And we have a tendency to just stick with using only one or two. I only buybrulers now to replace worn and chipped ones I use all of the time. Specialty rulers rarely get used by me, not worth it

I love my O'Lippa ruler. It was my very first ruler in the 1990s also :) GMTA Corey! Mine, however, is a meager 24" not 36" but it's 5" wide not 4" The other thing I really like about the O'Lippa besides the unmatched usefulness of that lippa :) is the fact the markings are solid, straight lines. Not crosshatches, not dots, just lines--clear and easy to see! As I get older this becomes more important. I like that it has 1/4" and 1/8" markings too. I must have collected over 50 rulers by now but O'LIPPA is my #1 goto every time! Oh and my cutting mats are small by comparison, because I lack space to use anything larger. I have one 11"x17" and one 17"x24"

I started with cheap rulers bc I needed one and found a set for less than the one...found out why they were cheap...most have broken. I don't have a lot of rulers. Mostly I use a 6.5 inch by 12.5 in creative grids left handed rulers. Finding left handed rulers...with numbering that helps decrease math mistakes for some of us...has been wonderful and helped so much!

I LOVE the stripology rulers. I have that same largest one. I use it almost everyday. So handy, accurate and really has helped with hand fatigue. I get so much done with so much quicker. I just bought the Flying Geese ruler and can't wait to try it. I'm leaving to attend a Family Reunion in Stark Co. OHIO (traveling from Vermont) next weekend; so no sewing for a while. CHEERS

For years, I only had 6x12" & 6x24" rulers. Now that I'm quilting more, I have bought a few square rulersfor squaring up blocks but always hesitate because they are so pricey. I also recently bought a Bloc Loc ruler for HST & it was a game changer for me! I also love the 1/2" wide rulers that I bought after seeing you use them. They are so nice for marking sewing lines!

  • @margaretlavenia4634
    @margaretlavenia4634 2 місяці тому +1

Make sure you pay attention if you have even rulers or one with 1/2" added. I've saved a few problems by checking that before trimming blocks! I use the 24x6.5 a lot. Like the 12x4.5 too. Nice to have a few square sizes for block sizes you make a lot. I recently bought a 16.5 square by Creative Grids for a t-shirt quilt and now use it a lot for trimming quilts for binding. My suggestion is to try a few brands-borrow from friends first and see what you like about the different brands. Some have more markings, some are even sized and some add that half inch, some have 45 degree marks and more, some not. See what you like before buying and regretting!

When I started my quilting and sewing journey 20years ago I only had a couple of rulers. Through the years l, especially the past 4 or five years I’ve purchased rulers just because I’ve seen videos and they weren’t for me. I always go back to my two that I started with and it works for me. I wish I hadn’t invested so much on unnecessary money.
    Thanks for your videos

If you have a chance to take any quilting classes in person, I think that's a great way to try out new rulers. Even if a ruler works great for one quilter, it's not going to work great for every quilter. I have tried some very popular rulers that weren't for me but I know other quilters love them!

I love the quilters select rulers. My favorite one is 2.5”x12” and recently got the 18” long as well. Another favorite one is the 6x12” from quilters select as well. My quilting space is small and these three work so well for me. A stripology ruler would be my dream. One day I’ll own one, too. Wished it would have the same non slip backing as the quilters select rulers. For the life of me, I can’t make them not slip of a nudge when cutting.

QUESTION. Hi Corey, I absolutely love your Channel and patterns. I was just wondering why PDF patterns are more expensive than paper patterns. I would thought that it would be the other way around. Also why do some places, say that PDF patterns are not available, only paper patterns. Again I would have thought computer generated patterns would cheaper to produce and would be available all the time, as against having to have them printed out and sent out via the postage system. Thank you.

I have been quilting for over 35 years. I have gone through my share of notions and rulers. My suggestion is to start with something you will use and can afford. I would suggest a 4.5 inch by 12.5 inch, a 12.5 square ruler and something longer like 6.5 by 24.5 wider or narrower would work too. Think of the quilting blocks you make and judge the sizes you need from there.
One suggestion is to have a nice smaller ruler for the quick trims and markings. You don’t need to buy them all although they are amazing to have.
Also get ones that you can see. Nothing worse than having a ruler on a mat and you can’t see the lines. Also think about the lines on the ruler do they make sense can you see yourself struggling?
Easy of use is why I use the rulers I do. Now I have a lot of different sizes. In part because they make easy gifts for my family to buy for a gift and I subscribe to a monthly subscription box.
You don’t need them all you just need ones that work with your brain and for the way you sew. ❤ have fun and keep quilting.

My longarm quilter who owns her own quilt shop suggested I try a Quilter’s Select ruler. I bought the 24x6”, 12x6”, 6x6” and 3x12?, rulers. I find myself reaching for them over my collection of CG rulers. My largest square ruler is the 16-1/2” Cute Cuts ruler I bought for making a t-shirt quilt. I use that ruler now for squaring up quilts. That ruler is thick and durable and easy to read. Thank you for the Jelly Sticks $5.00 pattern offer. I will be taking advantage of the sale. Years ago, 20 plus, I took my first quilting class. The instructor said the exact same thing you said on your opening, you don't need to buy the lastest and greatest. At the time I purchased creative grids, which is what the store carried, 12.5 by 12.5 square and the 6 by 24 inch long ruler. I still use these 90% of the time. You can cut just about all you need. Over the years I have purchased specialty rulers as needed for certain quilts I made, dresden ruler, the stip tube ruler, etc. I love watching your videos, plus I love your more traditional patterns. I think too, that working with what you have and not going out to buy another ruler is best as well. I have way more than I use because I thought I needed them but I use only a few of the ones I have. I have a 24 x 6 ½ ruler with a lip that I have had forever. I don’t remember not having it and I think it might be my second or third one. I always have problems cutting because I am left handed and rulers are tough to read backwards when you flip the over so you can cut on the left. The ruler with the lip gets rid of one worry - slipping and mine has the numbers printed in both directions which helps. And pushing forward or upwards and that ruler will not slip sideways. I also use a 5# dumbbell at the top just to make sure it doesn’t move when making a full width of fabric cut. I don’t have that many square rulers which are nice for squaring up completed blocks. I have a 12 ½ though and mostly use that one. The ruler with the lip works great for that as well. I love the Jelly Sticks Quilt. I need to make one! Thanks for offering it for a great price for this month. I think I have a jelly roll of Peachy Keen that will work. ❤

Excellence exploration of rulers. I couldn't agree more that quilters should be encouraged to work with what they have and learn to use all the dimensions of rulers to their best effect instead of just buying another one. One more "specialized" rulers I'd add to the list is the add-a-quarter ruler. It's so useful for foundation paper piecing. Love the Jelly Sticks pattern!

My very first ruler purchase was the Olipa 24”. Love love the lip. In fact it was the only ruler I had for the first 12 years of my quilting life, partly because of budget but honestly I was ok with just that one ruler, it did everything I needed. I still have and use it quite often even though I now have a few other (CG) rulers in different sizes.
And I did just what you suggested Corey, in the last few years as I have taken classes I tried out different the rulers in the shops. Even if you are not taking a class when you visit a quilt shop ask to see their classroom, if you see a ruler you’ve never used, ask and sometimes they will let you try it out.
A friend recently gifted me a June Taylor, she bought a Stripology, and I love it. And she also has switched out all of her rulers for Quilter’s Select. One thing I will pass along is she noticed the grippy stuff on the back can scratch off so she made fabric sleeves for each one to use when taking them to classes or sit n sews.
I am now in my 20th year of quilting life and very much appreciate all of the quilty knowledge you and others share with us.

My Olipfa has gotten a lot of use...what a handy ruler! I think I had that one plus a 6 1/2" x 24 1/2" (I don't recall the brand) for quite awhile before purchasing anything else. My June Tailor ruler and that 12 1/2" square ruler were earlier purchases of mine too.
Aren't quilting classes the best! I think some of my favorite notions are ones that were suggested to me during classes I was teaching...I tried out the Quilter's Select rulers in a class, a friend/student offered to loan me the Stripology ruler after we got to chatting about it in class one time, those pressing bars for pressing seams open was something I tried out after a student was using one, magic pins. Teachers learn just as much as students in those classes!

I also like the 2 1/2” x 12” rulers for cutting up scraps into jelly roll type strips and other than strips for my scrap bins are making jelly roll type quilts and foundation paper piecing and string quilts. Helps keep my stash under control or anyway I think it does.

I personally have found I like the Creative Grids rulers and have several sizes. I do like the 6 1/2 x and 24 1/2, 6 1/2 x 12 1/2, these I use for my main cutting. I do like the smaller ones for smaller sub-cutting and squaring up. One size that I don’t have yet is the 12 1/2 x12 1/2, I do want this for squaring up the quilt blocks. I also use the CG Flying Geese trim tool routinely. There are a lot of options for rulers, and I think each person has to find what works for them and makes sense to them.

A couple of rulers I can't quilt without are the Omnigrid 96 and 98 triangle rulers. I find my HSTs and QSTs are much more accurate if I cut them with these rulers. No need to draw lines. Another benefit is one more cut out of a regular WOF. Less waste!
