I have 3 potted bay leaf trees in our garden. I grow them for their culinary properties. In the Philippines, we use bay leaves in many of our dishes including soups, adobo, fried rice and many other fish and meat dishes.

You can eat it. Dry the leaves, grind them and add to soups/stews etc.

would you recommend planting the row of bay laurels near a swimming pool? I'm thinking of getting 15 gallon hedges and training them as 15 ft ornamental trees (pleeching I believe it's called). Thanks!

Phil Mendoza sounds awesome. They are tough trees once established. Roots are shallow so won't damage your pool. They rarely drop any leaves so not a messy tree at all near a pool. Ornamental pear trees like Pyrus Nivalis & Pyrus Calleryana also look great pleached
