- VOCES8 performs 'Lay a Garland' by Robert Lucas Pearsall at the Gresham Centre in London.
Lay a garland on her hearse
of dismal yew.
Maidens, willow branches wear,
say she died true.
Her love was false, but she was firm
Upon her buried body lie
lightly, thou gentle earth.

@@tiyeninI am 26 years old my good bitch
In the context of the current violence in Israel and Gaza, I'm in tears listening to this...
The cadence into the last note kills me everytime.
The tone and balance among the voices is truly immaculate. I prefer this performance over that of larger groups because it would be difficult to achieve this level of perfection any other way. BRAVO VOCES8!!!
It's the chemistry that makes the music sing. This is an outstanding small choir and thrill to bits to have stumbled upon them. I've subscribed.!
A cappella vocals require perfect pitch and beautiful tone in each voice.
This group is a great example of this and fills my ears and heart with joy.
Thank you Voces8! 👍🎼
No music requires perfect pitch.
A good ear however, sure is mandatory.
@@Barde_Jaune Um, hate to burst your bubble, but they are actually singing pitch-perfect here (whether they have perfect pitch or not!).
One of the most beautiful, heart-rending vocal pieces ever written. I sang this in a choir once (nowhere near as beautifully as this). Goosebump material.
I have had my daily fix. Am so grateful I stumbled across this magnificent ensemble a couple of months ago. This is my favourite piece. Thank you all xx
Voces8 never ceases to amaze. Absolutely sublime!
"Absolutely sublime" captures it perfectly...
Such a beautiful piece, brilliantly performed by the best group ever......
“Thou Gentle Earth” …tears every single time
You all look so BEAUTIFUL , when you are singing!
The ascending tenor line from 2:24 to 2:31 or so, is so beautiful.
Almost as good as the 2nd alto at 1.19 on 'Her love' - I used to put my whole soul into those three notes (later, when my voice sank to tenor, I'd agree with you!).
Your voices blend so well at the end that they truly become one. I stand in awe of your vocal abilities. Please keep sharing these recordings.

Gosh..magic! velvety brilliance. I always admire your control of the soundscape. unparalleled.
Stunning. Thank you 🙏
Beautiful song !!!
That was so stunning! Congratulations!
I accept that the words are less clear than in the recording by The Sixteen, but the sense of legato line and the gentle voice blend (especially the top soprano, whose voice just glides into the ensemble with a top G at 'Upon her buried body' ) is unparalleled by Harry Christopher's group. A fine performance - and without music, too!
It never occurred to me that there were words!
Speechless
Just exquisite!
So beautiful. You are amazing.
From my heart - thank you.
Simply beautiful .
Wonderfull!!!!
Magnificent voices individually; together, magic! I am a fan.
I sing with a few friends and this has always been one of our absolute favourites. Definitely want it at my funeral! Stunning performance as ever from Voces 8

Adoro i Voces 8!!!
to capture 1-2-3-4 at 1:20 was a perfect camera move!
Spine tingling! Phenomenal!
The blend is beautiful.
Stunning interpretation! Food for goosebumps for sure.
Son maravillosos!!!!
This is so luscious it's hard for voice parts not to compete yet the exquisite Voces 8, structured and steeped in 8 part harmony pull this off. Let's not forget the inspired harmony of Pearsall which shows each part as a melody; sublime, bravo!
The very first chord brought tears to my eyes. You guys are so amazing!
This song is my favorite one. I sang it with 100- members. So nice.
Your blend is unparalleled. This is purely intelligent singing. PERFECTION!!!
Sublime
Brilliant! 😁👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I dedicate this to the talented, beautiful singer, musician and teacher : Emma Murphy, who died recently far far too early. I first came across this stunning piece by Pearsall on an early music course with Emma singing the top line. Never forgotten. Loved the piece to death ever since, now literally to death, to Emma’s death. RIP beautiful talented lady 🙏🏽❤ We now Lay a Garland for you xx
Ethereal..You perform everything to the very highest possible standard. Thank you.
Non o parole emozione pura il posto che meritate e l..olimpo degli deiiiii fantastici.
I have no idea how I found you all, but you're all amazing! and the soprano sounds beautiful. Actually you all sound beautiful!!! The ending chord😍😍😍😍😍
Stunning emotional piece I’ve adored for many years, wow what an extra spine tingling rendition this is by Voces 8 THANK YOU you wonderful group! And recorded at one of my favourite haunts from years gone by - many a top notch early music lunchtime performance I was honoured to experience at St Anne & St Agnes church. Memories...
Oh dear! Yet another perfect vid from this amazing group!
Thank you.
I agree.
what a perfect outfit guys. Goes so well with the piece you have mastered.....
La migliore esecuzione di questo brano che ho sentito nella mia vita. Siete meravigliosi.❤
De todos los coros que escuche con esta obra, la mejor es de voces8
ARGUABLY the best piece of a cappella choral writing of the 19th century - beautifully performed.
This reminds me of "Faire is the Heaven"!
Tried to sing along, ended up running out of breath
magique !
WOW!!!
I'm probably on my 90th listen
A work of shear beauty, so well performed,. Thanks for this
Sheer
Muß ich täglich 2 mal hören.....
Why is this not on Spotify, TIDAL or any of the streaming platforms? This performance is SO GOOD. I'm shocked that you wouldn't put on any of the streaming platforms!
❤️
THAT is WRITING. I love the beautiful sustains with the gorgeous flowing movement underneath. Exquisite. I have a Cambridge Singers recording of this that is very nice, but I prefer this one. The recording tech from then to now may also be a factor in that, don't know.
2:12 the passing melody on "her buried body lie" from Soprano 1 to Soprano 2 is a FLAWLESS handoff
It strikes me that perhaps a key part of this magnificent sung beauty is the fact that the words are merely an adjunct to the music.
Even having read the words, I cannot make them out during the song and would never have even guessed that they are singing in English.
The original lyrics were lifted from a play The Maid's Tragedy - and was largely panned. You won't see many theater companies putting it up for that matter. It's perhaps the only excerpt from the play that has any depth. It's otherwise incredibly superficial.
😍😍😍😍😍😍
Seamless. Pure. Beautiful interweaving of sound and texture. It's like making love while floating on a cloud.
touching my heart feel.. good job
I did this last year (high school) as a the only baritone in a 25 person choir. I don't think my breathing has been as good since.
F in the chat for this guy 😭 i'm here for a madrigal performance and i doubt that i can be as good as them ong
Now. the 31!!! X
From now on VOCES80: each voice counts for 10...
I love VOCES8, but I have to say -- all the other videos they are dressy or comfortable or smart but for this one were they going for rumpled but not comfortable?
SUBLIME
Lovely. Who needs consonants, anyway x
This is outstanding, and not only the best Voces 8 version of this, but the best I have listened to. The blend is excellent, the expression is wonderful and the execution of the suspensions and resolutions is just perfect. For me, the rallantando at the end of the penultimate bar is too long. In an otherwise perfectly constructed and brilliantly composed piece I struggle generally with the last phrase because of the extension of the second soprano line with the dotted minimum when every other line has come off - I think it is intended to convey continuity. But we must remember that the original text was taken from a play written in the first person for a young lady whose betrothed is forced into a marriage of convenience - she is pleading at least for the consolation that upon her body should lie gentle earth. So the final repeated phrase should in my view contrast even more in dynamic with the preceding same phrase to convey reaffirmation and reassurance and perhaps weariness on her part by taking it down to ppp.
와 대박..
