The problem with our departments is that they only act after an incident has occurred and only for that moment and that's it! We know we have a serious problem with products that are being sold in local tuck shops, but we wait for a child to die before we do something. Do something serious than just doing surface inspections.
The level of incompetence from these GNU departments is astounding, stemming from the fact that she can easily state that the war has not been lost yet, speak volumes of ignorance. The Gauteng Food Safety Forum has the task of ensuring that spaza owners that sells expired goods are held accountable, notwithstanding negligence of selling poisonous goods to children. Warehouses from which these goods are bought in bulk and distributed should be checked for expiration date. Seems like procuring a "certificate of acceptability' has given spazas and consumer warehouses the right to sell and distribute toxic edibles. With so many stakeholders involved in curbing such tragic events, one wonders how long will the government prove to be effective in protecting the health of its citizens particularly children.
