PowerA Switch Controller Drifting - DEEP CLEAN

- If you still have drift issues after trying my first video • PowerA Nintendo Switch... despite trying washing a couple of times, this is your video!
This is NOT for the faint of heart! You will be prying open/cleaning small components. ADVANCED USERS ONLY!!!
After unsuccessfully trying the non-destructive pouring method, (it turned occasional drift into an inability to read down inputs LOL,) I gave the offending stick a detailing as shown in the vid to great results! The drift has been significantly reduced, and I only had to address one potentiometer to do so (the up and down one, where I was having issues). Just the one turned the tip of my Q-tip gray haha. Thanks for the guide, it was a great help!
Awesome! Glad you made out 😎
I wasn't expecting it to actually work but it did the controller is good as new now I don't feel ripped off
Oh wow nice! You skipped my amateur video and went straight into Dark Souls difficulty! Congrats!!😉😎
Thank you for the close up too
Thanks to you I was able to fix my son's gamepad 🙏
The cleaning didn't help, but I fixed it bending the contacts towards the circled track.
Glad i was able to help you out! 😎
If you ever need to replace the wiper, you can get them on AliExpress. Just pop them out and put them in the existing potentiometer

Ty! Gonna try this! I'm so fed up with buying new controllers! I have bought over 10 within a year!!
Now this looks like a video for me
Glad you like it! Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions!
Is there a quick way to know if the stick internal mechanism is bad vs potentiometer?
This is for your previous video on this issue: why is it so important to clean the residue on the board before putting IPA on the orange components? I didn’t understand the reason. (I did it though don’t worry!)
Also thank you for making this; I’m doing it now I hope it works for my crazy drifting left stick.
It works perfect now wow thank you.
You're very welcome! Glad it all worked out for you.
To answer your question, you need to clean the board first to get rid of the existing conductive residue. If you didn't clean the board first and then did the pour and got some on the board, you would be spreading around the contaminant you want to remove that's causing the issue
@@vc561 ah ok thanks for explaining
That works in my case
Genius 👌👌👌
On mine a screw was missing, the one in the middle between the 2 sticks ... IPA did the trick for the moment.
Yeah there are so many revisions that there are bound to be changes like that to cut costs.
I have deeper clean video where you crack open the orange parts and clean them from the inside of the issue crops up again
@@vc561 Drift is back, Deeper Clean + bend contacts hold 8 hours before drifting again... I can't go on cleaning... go go RMA :( I will never buy PowerA product again.
Sorry to hear. I would recheck cleaning the board especially around the gold test points.
Good luck with your RMA
@@vc561 The new controller consumes the batteries in 3 days without using it, now i am waiting for a refund... To those who come across my comment you will have understood that this product should be avoided.
Its been a long time since you made this video. I found the culprit of my drift. The little metal bit set in plastic you remove with the prongs to clean the inside, the one with the prongs you said to make sure dont bend, that seems to be bent out of shape. Do uou know the name of this part so i can see about ordering a replacement of that little piece?
I dont know if i did something wrong or what but now the sticks don’t work
Did you put them in the right way? The metallic part needs to face outward and the metallic bump need to face straight up from the board. Also give it some time to dry if you soaked it in isopropyl
Same here
Thank you so much for this! In my case, what I found after cleaning, is that the mechanism is fine and working, the problem is the plastic stick. When I move the joystick fast to the right, it bounces in a way that inputs the left direction almost the 50% of the times. However that doesn't happen if I move the mechanism alone, without the plastic stick. Any suggestion to fix that? I try to buy a Pro Controller Stick to replace just that part, but the hole is different, it's wider than the Power A
Hrmm maybe get the pro stick and put a little scotch tape on the shaft to thicken it up to fill in the gap?
Seguí todo al pie de la letra y ahora mi Joystick izquierdo no detecta movimiento ni a la izquierda ni a la derecha
Damn PowerA controllers are nice looking treasury, too bad many customers reclaim about this same issues. Id ask if its worth as switch pro controller if im talking about sticks sensivity. Im tired to use xbox one controller with device although it works nice(I just need + - button to enjoy further nintendo switch). I perhaps purchase wireless powerA controller
Idk what your budget is, bit i would look at the 8bitdo controller in terms of a good solid controller.
Only knock on it is it can't wake up the system like the powerA controllers

Decided to give it a try. The left joystick was only having issues so worked on that side. Up and down functions work on it but when I try to move left and right nothing happens. Maybe the small metallic pieces in the orange compartment that controls the left and right functions got damaged/ bent? Is there a way to fix this issue?
If the stick is mechanically sound, (i.e it springs back to the center without issue from any angle) then yeah you could buy a replacement potentiometer and soldier it in or take it apart and swap the metallic 'wiper' taking care not to bend it.
I haven't done it myself yet but maybe I'll do a video on it

@@vc561 Tinkering with the wire a bit to look like the one on the right joystick I got it working again. So far no drift which is good. Thanks for the video and response. I'll save that link in case something goes wrong again.
Awesome so it sounds like the wiper was bent before. Glad you were able to get it working again!
An update: it came back and even worse. Everything is clean this time. Just going to buy another sensor wheel from your link above.
Sorry to hear. Amazon has the wired Xmas version for around $12 I'd you can get past the ugly sweater theme 😜

Is it supposed to still be able to "drift" when the small pieces are removed?
Not following you. If the small metallic pieces are removed and left out when reassembled the controller sticks wont function at all.
If the stick itself is loose (ie doesnt spring to the center when released), then thats a mechanical issue with the stick which means the whole assembly should be replaced.
The part costs like 3 bucks on aliexpress and you need to have decent soldering skills
If this method doesn't work, is there a plan D?
Plan D would be replacing the part itself and resoldering a new one. A complete stick assembly is like $2.50 at aliexpress and just the potentiometers alone are like 10 for $3.50
what joysticks do you get for those cause I can’t find ones
www.aliexpress.com/item/33035601580.html
So I opened up my controller and the part that is the joystick is actually loose in there, that’s why it drifts , but is there a way to fix that ?
I have sent in a request for it, (got it in Mar. to play fortnite)
, and 2 months later was already messing up
If the stick is actually loose, then you have to replace the part and solder in a new one.
Something like this should do

Hey, does this work on the wired version too??
It should yes. In fact most analog sticks in general should work. The analog control stick design is basically the same across several console generations
say i been wondering and might be weird to ask (and yes it me about asking if powera wired can be fix) but can i even send you my controller to fix it? it only the drifting problem (it only the joy stick one i believe and my controller is a fire 8bit mario)
Would love to fix it for you, but alas the shipping back and forth would be better off just buying another.
If you bought it fairly recently, i would log a support ticket with power a and see if they would replace it
support.powera.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
@@vc561 hm i guess you're right but thanks (wish they can do repairs for free tho.)
If it's under warranty, my understanding is that they send you another. They tell you to keep the other one. Seriously, try filing a warranty claim if its been less than a year
@@vc561 hm i guess i'll do that (and find the way to fix the other one if manage) but thanks but i honestly wondered why keeping it also
Try my other video if you haven't already. That one is less invasive
It's worst now xD
Worse how? Either you didn't give it enough time to dry or you bent/broke the pins.
Try drying the board waving a hair dryer over it for like a minute
Did not work
Sorry not everything is a 100% fix. Did anything change at least? Did it start drifting another direction?
