    Alpha females need more love. I have been able to dig up a few good stories by being very broad in my searches. Seems like every fandom has a tiny handful of maybe 2 to 6 stories in which a powerful female character is an alpha. Peggy Carter and Sherlock's Irene Adler are sort of obvious choices. I've seen a few others, but not many. As much as I love my boy-slash too, I'd give a kidney for lots more of the alpha female trope!

    I honestly love omegaverse very much, it gives a more creative atmosphere for the author to bend some rules without the actual character losing their personalities but my only problem has been how omegas are usually treated or portrayed. They are mostly treated as livestock, prizes, or toys. Even when the scent is not effecting the alpha in fanfics, the alpha typically don't give the omega any type of choice like if they are actually ready to get pregnant or be given the rights or respect of any other of the classes (Alpha, beta). Because of the omegas pheromones that attract alphas in their world they are seen as "easy targets" makes them seem weak and below society. Most of the plot occurs when an omega refuses, forgets or runs out of their medicine when in heat, it's an au that mostly relies on an alpha being in the wrong place and the wrong time so they can smell the omega when nearby and lose control. Alphas usually have a hard time controlling themselves when this happens and most the time don't regret it much afterwards or do not apologize to the omega. This bothers me sometimes when reading but hey that's just me.

      Make the omegas the standard leaders of the society's governments (Not all have to be this way. A mix, but majority) since they won't suddenly rush to war (if incorporating the aggressive alpha aspect) That would lead to more serious consequences for the consent issues of this trope.
      IDK. I usually stay away from it.

      Same. I actually have trouble reading any fic that incorporates the main characters having kids because the ones I have read have always had very annoying, cutesy kids who overtake the entire story and/or who get in the way of me being able to enjoy the romantic/sexual relationship that I'm reading the story for. Plus I will never understand the attraction of a pregnant male character.

    I’ve been aware of A/B/O verse for almost the whole time I’ve been involved in fandom. I had no idea it was so young. I thought it happened earlier in SPN fandom. I would read some in the early days, but there are certain fandoms where I have learned to avoid these fics. In those fandoms, it seems as if the A/B/O roles are almost always assigned according to gay stereotypes of tops and bottoms. It just gets too entrenched in those stereotypes to be enjoyable to me. Tack on the fact that cis men can get pregnant, it reads to closely to a feminization of gay, bi or pan men.

During this time I decided to take to google and search for the AU. I found nothing. Today you can search and tons of art and sites will come up explaining or containing the AU. It's kind of terrifying to see in such a short time something becoming so popular.

      I feel like a majority of fanfiction authors are female, and young ones too. Depictions of women in fanfic as often being more submissive in more smutty works can play into a deeper instinctual desire of many young females to let go and have someone else take charge with their sexuality, since I'm guessing many of these authors are virgins, don't know what to do with their sexuality or are nervous about it, so they fantasize about having someone else essentially take charge and guide them through it. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have the Mary Sue character archetype, which can play as a power fantasy, feeding into the author's ego, or giving them an escape if they feel underapreciated in real life.
      I don't know much about femships though. Not that I haven't seen any or that they're not there, but because I'm just really not attracted to the female body, so those fics are kind of a major turn-off for me.

    @sacredlamb3021 5 років тому +49

    I find Omegaverse misogynistic. Most times I think a story has a message in it, and when authors feticiste traditional gender roles....just no. To me Omegaverse is the Handmade tale, but from someone who actually likes it and romanticizes it ( and by that I mean just from a kink perspective, cause i don't think authors themselves condone sexism irl, and there are a lot of really bad stuff that is fetichised, but at least most people would acknowledge that they are feticising, for example, rape, but to my knowledge this fandom doesn't acknowledge that they are just re branding and feticising sexism)
    when I read a traditional AOB (that doesn't have an explicit social critique of the society) i view it as just another tale where individuals (the characters) internalize their assigned role in society based on their biology, and I can't separate that reality from the text.
    An era before feminism existed and both men and women found women being submissive to men as the way things ought to be, but this time with Omegas and Alpha. Biology has historically been an excuse to divide men and women in society, just cause in the AOB there's even MORE biological rational, doesn't make it different.
    If there's a fic where Omegas ad Betas and Alpha get together to form a movement to disrupt the hierarchies, it all in bdw.

    I love omegaverse (yes partly because of the kink) but the character dynamics are so interesting and I love it. You've got rare omegas hiding their omaga-ness and then getting found out during heat. And it's not even the south that's awesome (though yeah, it is) but also the alphas suddenly feeling super protective over the omega. Ugh I just live it so much xD

  • @LightEbonyDarkIvory
    @LightEbonyDarkIvory 6 років тому +97

    OMG I love A/B/O fic so much! What I particularly love about it is how it plays with gender dynamics. In the real world, you basically have men and women. In A/B/O, you can potentially have 6 different genders. So you can have a world in which women were never treated as less than men. Instead, you have omegas which include both men and women. Of course, a lot of injustice and consent issues and stuff like that can occur in these fics. But it's not purely women suffering from gendered discrimination as a matter of course. That's why whenever I get really upset at sexism in the real world, I go to A/B/O where gender politics is completely shaken up. This is also why I hate A/B/O that just completely erases women. It kinda spoils the whole thing for me. I mean I usually read it as a m/m fic, but I only like it if women also exist in this world as well.

    • @jens7571
      @jens7571 6 років тому +18

      This is true in theory but whenever I read abo fics they are almost exclusively male focused. I would love to see a female alpha/omega male fic to explore this idea (even though I'm a lesbian) but usually abo is just used to justify mpreg or apply sexism/dubcon to male gay relationships.

    • @screamingsushi6260
      @screamingsushi6260 6 років тому +14

      Well may I make an argument? Our society is kinda like the A/B/O universe, we just use male and female in place of A/O. So in that world, gender don't matter at all. Now, their can still be a form of sexism. It's hard to explain, but you can see the dynamic can use Alfas to oppress betas and omegas. That is kinda their form of sexism. Opposing people off of what they identify as and something that they cannot change. You can kinda compare A/B/O to both gender and sexuality and it's all kinda the same in a weird way.

    It depends on which fandom and how far the author wants to go with it, but I do like a/b/o. The only things that really bother me about this trope is the consent issues that's present in a lot of fics, and the lack of femslash and female alphas but that's about it. A/B/O is really interesting, there's a lot of dynamics you can explore with it. Yay for A/B/O!

    As someone who loves A/B/O, specifically in the Marvel MCU, I'm always down to know more. It's fascinating, all the different permutations you can use to change the life experiences and interpersonal dynamics between the characters. Steve Rogers alone is a gold mine of different situations, since the serum changed his entire physiology and he can experience multiple designations (presentations, etc). Make it a Stucky fic and you've just doubled the possibilities!

    • @KiriWho
      @KiriWho 6 років тому +1

      Yes, Stucky is life for me. Either character can play either role and since both have different personas the designation combinations and situations are endless. Do you have some favorites?

    • @DerpDevilDD
      @DerpDevilDD 6 років тому +2

      I really enjoy AlphaSteve and OmegaBucky, where there's some kind of preexisting romance element. I like that Steve has to deal with being a sickly, defective Alpha, either pining after an oblivious Bucky or doing his best for Buck, while feeling like he's not good enough (even though Bucky would never want anyone else). I like the way the dynamic changes when Steve's all post-serum huge and now Bucky is the vulnerable one that needs someone to take care of him and Steve gets to make up for all the care Bucky's shown him over the years.
      I also like Steve switching designations as a result of the serum and having to go through puberty all over again, because it gives him such a huge world view, being on both sides of the divide that way.
      Of course, I love Stucky without A/B/O, too. They're just so damn good together and the story arc between them is so epic.

      RedHoodedRobin what Poison said, it depends on the fandom.
      I'm pretty sure though that one of the main reasons is due to the number of male characters in the show/story. Like, I noticed that Shonen animes, which usually has a LOT of male characters than female, tends to be dominated with m/m in fandom.

  • @beyabeyabe

    Hello, I'm dropping by to say that this troupe fascinates me.
    1. The Omega-Alpha dynamic. Most of omegaverse fics portrays omegas as lowly beings. It helps tackle the exact thing that happened through history, slavery. In some well written fics, you can see how the Alpha plays the part in changing the world and banishing slavery. You also have to have a fair amount of knowledge on the rise and fall of communities etc. I am an of fictions that revolves around changing the world's dynamic.
    2. The flexibility of genders. It's very interesting to see female Alphas in this universe, where women are treated no less than men. Even m/m can have a child and it's heart-warming.
    3. The constraint. What you will regularly see in this troupe is an omega, fighting for his/her rights. It stirs on a new sense of justice and you can't help but admire them. Also, when omegas are in heat, some fics make the alpha tries his hard to fight his animalistic behavior just to help the omega. The alphas sometimes can be so caring and kind and it breaks stereotypes.
    In conclusion, I like this troupe if it involves their will to change or constraint. Like, they live in this inevitable world and somehow they hv to cope. I hate it if the fic doesn't resolve the conflict between a/b/o.

    I love Omegaverse, but not for the smut (although some of it is very well written...AHEM!) For me I love it for its mpreg, soul mate and fluff potential with a pinch of angst. If anything the werewolf and BDSM aspect pushes me away. I think since it began Omegaverse has matured and fics tend to explore bigger narratives than just smut.
    I am currently writing a A/O for Stucky.

    I personally find the omegaverse very intriguing. I like the world building part of it. I believe that you can use the medusa effect on the verse, to see how people view our world. E. g. All the A/B/O combinations is the medusa effect of all of the diffrent sexuality's in our own world. E. g. Omega and omega are not taken seriously, especially if their primary gener(e. g. male & male) is the same. The same goes with Alpha couples. (I know most people today don't look at it this way. But there is still a lot that do it, sadly.)

For me, the world has to be very well thought out, and what i love in this tripe is the possibility to challenge societal rules and problems! I for example love wen authors take the structure and make civil rights movements out of them! This tripe can be the best thing ever, or it can be a total failure for me! Depends on the author ☺️

Look for "The Gilded Cage" by BeautifulFiction, Johnlock pairing, on AO3. 326K of intense world-building, case fic, and gender politics, with all consent issues addressed before any smut happens, which is much later in the fic that you'd think.

    In the last months I often read about Triad pairings in the ABO verse, the most stable you are in a triad.
    There are some writers, who actually tired to sort out the genetics, how would the genetic make up for a person in the ABO verse look like and how genetics would work with deciding, would you be alpha, beta or omega.
    It can be rather detailed and creative indeed.

    I love a/b/o fic - in fact, it may well be my favourite type of fic. thank you so much for this incredibly interesting video, I had noticed (and read) a LOT of spn a/b/o but I didn't know that that was, if not the origin, then at least the popularisation. The kimk dynamic and sexual content are fun to read, if written well, but the huge depth of world building is the real cincher for me. Hot smut isn't that hard to find; hot smut that reorganises the world we live in into complex and well orchestrated ways? That's the shit right there.

Because the only wolves we were able to observe were in captivity, that's what we thought for a long time, but when observed out in the wild, wolf packs act much more like families, or lion prides. Interesting. I didn't know about this, but I could kinda guess what it was from the name. I like your discussion on the healthiness of the trope. Personally, I think it's easy for this to be an unhealthy dynamic, and that saying "It's just fiction, chill out," is not an answer. Because fiction does influence our worldview in very real ways. I don't think it's kink-shaming if you're concerned about how the person who likes it might be affected, if you're worried that it might make them accepting of abuse in an actual relationship. At the same time, I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying unhealthy dynamics in fiction, as long as you're aware that it only works in fiction. That's why it's good that there's a discussion around it; that's what makes it ok in my book.

    • @designerhearts
      @designerhearts 6 років тому +2

      Hakajin That is a very true point, I do believe effort needs to be made within certain stories to explain when aspects aren't really "okay" for a better term. Personally I like a lot of darker fics, that omegaverse can easily create but they do have to make note of it, and I very much dislike putting light on things that are bad, when it is a good fanfic of horrible things, that are made to be horrible it's okay personally, it just needs to be tagged or warned properly depending on how bad it may go

    stuff like omega opression, omega rights, how heats influence workforce, changes in fertility (in many fics ONLY omegas can get pregnant), theres more inclusion of women in these fics. there are many that are like "our world but my gay ship can have kids and there are more defined streotypical gender roles" but i cherish ones that play with the idea more.
