That part hearing one lady screaming “OMG” haunts me everytime. To imagine being ripped apart and eaten alive just adds to that horrific image.
the same for me...that scene is terrific!
Especially when you add in the context from the previous scene when we see clearly families and young children were among the people being eaten before Riley and crew arrived.
Zombies 🧟🧟♂️ are just brutal . Still not their fault. It's their natural instinct . I just mean traditional and related zombies 🧟🧟♂️.
I looked up this scene after watching this movie on TV back in 2008. That woman's screaming still haunts me 12 years later. I remember getting disturbed then angry when that guy just lets the rest of the zombies go. I picture her being ripped out from her stomach, and probably looking to her side and seeing a child being eaten, then screaming realizing this is how she was going to die, and how she can't believe this is happening. I would have wiped them ALL out just for that screaming woman.

1:00 Riley is right, there’s nothing that they can do for the people that are being eaten by zombies. Eventually, those people would’ve turned into zombies as well. So, basically, this was a mercy killing.

It’s cool how the only reason the zombies attacked was cause Big Daddy (the leading zombie) got the other undead to seek revenge on the rich jerks who used them back before they turned. During the film, they ignored the poor people who hid, they only attacked & ate the rich or the solders that stood in their way.
With the main rich guy dead, their revenge is served & are gonna look for a place to go.
Sad we'll never get a good followup now that George is dead. Such an amazing film series

Twilight of the dead is the follow-up that Romero wrote before his passing that his wife is searching for a director for the project. Most likely it will go to NetFlix.

That was just sad to see all those people being eaten alive but those zombies and it's too bad that we're never going to see a movie like this ever again since George Romero passed away back in 2017.
Actually, Romero wrote a script that ends his franchise that is a sequel to this one called Twilight of the Dead that shows what the smart zombies have made as a society. Romero's wife is looking for a director to film his script it will go to streaming if it gets made.

Actually the people we see getting were the elites who were partially responsible for how bad this got. They were so confident in their safety that they neglected putting time and effort into training the military or in learning how to defend themselves in close combat. This was actually their just desserts.

I always loved the final shot with the fireworks. If those zombies are smart enough to pick up guns and use them, they certainly know when some humans aren’t a threat to them anymore. When I was younger I was disappointed they didn’t fire off the rest of the zombies. But I get it now.
When I was a kid seeing this movie gave me the best dreams and the best nostalgic flash backs and coming back to see this scene just made me a little emotional because I always loved seeing Riley the order and big daddy as people call him, the chaos. I love this movie and it will always be in my heart.

Not sure Riley really thought through getting rid of all those fireworks. Any zombies further north wouldn't have Big Daddy there to make them learn to ignore them, unless the big man intends to travel across the country teaching his zombie bros not to be fooled by humans' trickery.
The thing is there are no zombies north or only a small number because North is too cold they all die from brain freeze that's why they want to go north to the cold.

I found it funny that this all could have been prevented if Big Daddy was killed in the beginning of the movie! However, who's to say there's not more zombies like Big Daddy?
Doubt it. You can tell he was one of a kind, and will be for a long time. To be honest he was the only one of his kind as far as evolved intellect goes.
He just taught the others how to do basic shit that gave them the edge. Big daddy was a very special case

Why not exactly zombieland it is pretty big and the kill count I believe because look at that horde God that is freaking enormous. Can they killed hundreds just for revenge dude and to take back their land.

This movie wasn't quite as great, but a lot of the moments where it hits strongest feel like a commentary on how we as a society tend to treat people with various disabilities or diseases. In the end, Big Daddy and his people still had a spark of life in them that began to resurface the longer they went uninterrupted, and in the end that spark of humanity is what allows them to be satisfied beyond the base urge of feeding, They feel self-fulfilled again for the first time in what must be years.
It kind of takes Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead's theses and runs with them.
if Dawn of the Dead was about how we rationalize our unchecked consumerism, and Day of the Dead was about how we rationalize the treatment of others in times of stress, Land of the Dead is about how we rationalize ours and others' roles in society, and more importantly, how we need to realize that those roles tend to be forced upon us by people who entertain themselves by watching those lower than them struggle.
Each Romero Zombie film is reflective of the decade it's made and of the issues of the decade, it's made in. Land is about class warfare rich vs poor vs zombies. All of Romero's Zombie films are made about social commentary of each decade with the Zombies just as metaphors.
Every time I see Riley and Big Daddy look at each other, I always feel like they know they're gonna see each other again.

Looking at Big Daddy’s face, it kinda reminds me of The White Walkers, and i think of the theories that suggest that rather then just wanting to kill all mankind, the Others have motives that involve protecting their people. Really loved the direction this movie went.

That’s actually the fault of the rich people in charge. They got so complacent security. They never bothered investing in properly train their security teams, nor in learning how to defend themselves in close quarters combat situation. They were arrogant enough to delude themselves that they weren’t in an apocalypse and had nothing to fear. They thought they were safe in their city and never believed the zombies would find a way to cross the rivers. They were unprepared and found themselves trapped by the very defenses they were using to keep the zombies out. Their soldiers are all eliminated and they were defenseless because they didn’t know how to fight back and never expected to need to. To call the towns people here. Stupid is probably very accurate. Especially since they kept exploring the people below them, so they wouldn’t have to risk their own lives. They were cowards, and died as such really this was actually fitting.

I can’t be the only one wondering how the hell “Big Daddy” got his name. Like maybe I just missed it but overall this is got to be one of my favorite zombie movies. I just want a 2nd movie of this and the possibility add of the virus mutating years later to give them speed. Like imagine if humanity finally starts to seem to be getting the world back & big daddy manages to teach a zombie his intelligence before rotting away or being killed. Then this zombie later develops the mutated virus that gives them the speed zombies in “World War Z” have. I’d like to see them experiment with idea like that and see if this zombie would then carry out getting revenge with the new generation of mutated zombies.
The zombie is called Big Daddy because in the beginning of the movie in his first scene you see his name tag. It says Big Daddy
Well the other comment is correct but it isn't the only reason he's seen as a father figure to the other zombies. In Day of the Dead we had a character named Bub the actor created the zombie mentally of a big baby who's just relearning everything that was his motivation when he created that zombie mind. He remembered some things sure but he was having to relearn everything and when his father died or he found his father murdered he knew exactly who killed him and he killed the guy right back so big daddy is based on him and in fact they were going to use Bob but for some reason they named him Big Daddy and recast.
I definitely they wanted Big Daddy because Big Daddy had already grasped some of the things that the zombies need to know to take back their land and be a somewhat functioning society again. Well at least you're trying anyway.

I honestly don't understand why Riley didn't just shoot Big Daddy and the other zombies because of what they did to the city, like has he not been seeing what the zombies are capable of at this point?!!
It's because the Zombies attacked the city for revenge against humans killing their kind it was personal. After the attack, they were leaving to go off on their own and form their own community. The smart ones have evolved past wanting to eat people and eventually his zombie army would to and they would create their own society.

Also, a lot of problems started because of the leader ship of the city were oppressing those below them and those were the people we saw getting eaten here. The zombies also ignored most of the poor people and went after the rich bastards who were the most deserving of getting eaten since they had neglected improving things for society as a whole and only cared about the lavish lifestyle they were enjoying. Karma is a bitch.

Well if Riley knew who started the whole thing then I think he would’ve fired on that walkway.
No he had sympathy for the Zombies and saw the smart ones as living creatures he let them go because they were no longer a threat and were leaving the city now so he felt shooting them was a waste of ammo and pointless.
Also, Riley probably realize that it was the upper class that was wiped out and he already knew from personal experience that those guys were no good and they were better off without them mean the zombies did them a favor

Those were the rich snobs that were so neglectful that the reason the defenses crumbled so easily was because they never put any effort into properly training the soldiers, heightening the fortifications, or even learning how to defend themselves in close quarters. They never even considered that zombies would find a way into the city and so were caught off guard and by the time they realized that their defenses were breached there was no hope of escape.
Not to mention the way, the leader ship abuse the people and the poor areas, including feeding some of them to captive zombies. Makes this seem rather fitting.

It has its flaws, but this was probably the 2nd best zombie movie Romero had ever done. I've heard people complain that the people are just plain bad and you know its dark when the zombies are portrayed better, but I think that was the point. Someone can explain it better than I can, but the zombies are supposed to be portrayed better, showing them graining back their intelligence again after being zombifyed. Look at Big Daddy for example, probably the smartest zombie in the whole movie, fighting for those who go and attack his kind on raids. Once the people of Fiddler's Green are dead and eaten, they leave, leaving an unspoken message to Riley and his group saying don't go after us, we won't go after you. Yeah I might be thinking too deep on this, but c'mon, it's a good thought provoking movie, not something we really see much around.

I wish we would have gotten the uncut version of this. The original script was so much better.
I wouldn’t feel too bad for the citizens being eaten. For context those were the rich elites who were partly to blame since living in security for so long made them neglectful to invest in properly training the militia that was supposed to defend them and also in further fortifying the river barriers in case zombies found a way to cross. They let their hubris delude them into thinking that nothing could hurt them and that they could live in complete safety while exploiting the less fortunate to do all the work of getting supplies to continue living in luxury. The fact that they were slaughtered so easily was because they neglected to learn how to defend themselves in case they ever did get attacked. All in all, while their deaths were awful, it WAS well deserved. They abused those below them and used them for their own benefit. As added karma, most of the poor survived while the rich were trapped by the defenses they had relied on and the military forces defending them proved inadequate and were wiped out leaving them with the realization that they were not as safe as they believed and that they were going to be eaten and there was nothing they could do about it.
You could probably guess what was going through their minds when they realized what was going to happen to them.
All in all this was karma for their arrogance and hubris. They deluded themselves into thinking that they weren’t living in an apocalypse and that they could exploit those below them without consequence. They underestimated the dead and found their safe haven turned into a prison and then their tomb when the zombies made a meal of them and it is clear their deaths were NOT quick OR painless

This is gut wrenching stuff. Does anyone else see parallels between this and Edgar Allan Poe's the masque of the red death? Don't let Romero manipulate you into class envy. That's the only thing I don't like about his movies. And I'm a huge fan.

That’s quite sad; she seemed to do fine in this movie. I still like land of the dead remover seeing it when I was a child and looking back at it it’s quite a unique film. I loved the characters, and yes Asia was hot! So was pretty boy (the blond girl)

The only bright side was that the rich snobs who exploited the lower classes for their own benefit were the ones being eaten in this scene. They were largely to blame for what ultimately happened to them as none of them ever considered investing in training a proper military to retake areas from the undead to expand their safe zone or any other solution that would have benefited society in the long term. All they cared about, was maintain the lifestyle and comforts they were enjoying and never even considered that zombies would find a way into their safe haven until it was too late for them. They ignored a potential threat instead of taking steps to deal with it and as a result paid with their lives. The fact that they fed some of their enemies to captured zombies makes this more fitting since they now get to experience what those people experienced. The zombies didn’t even bother killing them before tearing them apart and eating them, so all of them died in complete agony.
