Sounds like good advice and should help to make each practice session more productiive. I will make this a daily routine along with the Caruso six notes, running all my major scales (varying the articulation), lip bends, and lip slurs. Improving endurance and maintaining a good sound are important and I think daily long tones will help in these areas.
I can attest to the effectiveness of long tones. Doing them like you suggest has helped build more health in my playing and production, and I don’t see myself ever deviating from doing them on a daily basis.
I play Trombone and always hated doing long tones so when my teacher forced me to do them every practice session I kind of hated him. Now I'm quite thankful for that because it truly helped with so much
great information, just subscribed 👍 Quick question …what do you recommend on those days when you sit down to play, starting with long tones and your sound is utter garbage? or if you get to a higher note and the sound chokes out and is thin and crappy? Is there anything you can do to improve this? some days I find I sound fine across the range of the instrument and others randomly sound crap 🤷♂️
You generally want to try and figure out why things sound like garbage. Is it your air not moving well? Are your corners firm enough in the upper register? Is your articulation clear and coordinated? It’s hard to give specific feedback without hearing you, but I would say if you’re having troubles, there is a reason. Sometimes it also could be overplaying, in which case, a day off can do wonders!
@@RyanBeachtrumpet Hey thanks for that, really helpful! You might actually be right about the overplaying because I do find if I have a day off, the next day I sound pretty good, I am finding my endurance isn’t what it used to be back in my younger days 🤦♂️ I’ll also keep an eye out on some of those other tips 👍
Check out my full routine play through, including the way I do long tones, in this video: ua-cam.com/video/opYh7lRISOc/v-deo.html
I just found this video but I wish I had found it earlier because it is very helpful! Thank you
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching.
Very helpful ideas! Thanks heaps!
Absolutely, I’m glad you got something out of the video!

Hi
Would it be a problem to do this with a mute?
thanks
Not necessarily. It’s better without, but if you have to use a mute, I don’t see a problem.
APP, WTF!
