  • That's right, this one's about the world-renowned Septic Flesh... and not Septicflesh! What do I mean by that? Well, you'll have to watch the episode to find out!

Thank you for doing this episode. I've been raving about 90s Septic Flesh being better than current Septicflesh for years.

Need to revisit the early stuff again, saw them live at some festival and left half a song in since I heard the new stuff.
Biggest fall from grace I can think of.

I enjoyed the modern septicflesh that I’d heard tbh and you’ve made me decide to go check their earlier stuff too.

Are you sure you're not Cobra? Because I'm not sure. You sound like you could be him earlier in the morning before he starts drinking.

    15:22 "...but monolithic in scope." (˵ ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°˵)
The history of Septic Flesh truly is an Greek tragedy.
My man, don't think you've left any stone unturned when it comes to the praise & love for these titans of ambitious & evocative metal. I'll do my best tho.
Effortless masters with an idiosyncratic vision when it comes to grand scale compositions, emotive catharsis & god-tier riffage galore. On the contrary, current day SepticFlesh has this egregious disconnect between the ambitious intent of sounding 'epic' & the incapability to convey the proper emotive force to do said intent proper justice. Long story short, weak riffs can't be compensated by overblown symphonic dressing. Weakness masquerading as triumph.
Mystic Places of Dawn truly is timeless. Truly the musical equivalent of 'ancient' relics from a long forgotten past, oddly similar to Manilla Road in that regard (nice catch).
Similarly to Alf Svensson's melodic sensibilities being influenced by Swedish acoustic folk melodies played in reverse, 90's Septic Flesh also fits the bill of being one-of-a-kind in their very fundamentals of the riffage style. The unmistakably Hellenic take of trad traits incorporated in the melodic backbone.
Up for debate, but what seems to be a consistent factor for distinct bands delivering idiosyncratic classics in the 90's was the 'unorthodox' recontextualization & elaboration of one's roots. The potential of an intriguing line of composing based on one's idiosyncratic culture & heritage. Said idiosyncratic characteristics would contribute to one's distinct internalized sense of melody & being a quintessential pillar for forming an one-of-a-kind identity. The key to timeless metal. Sui Generis.
Far beyond a milestone for genuine emotive & evocative metal.
The perfect equilibrium between melancholy & catharsis.
    90's Septic Flesh is eternal.
Speaking of idiosyncratic anomalies in ambitious & triumphant metal, on a sombre note:
    Rest In Power PK.
While their crowning jewel will remain Nachthymnen, there's something thoroughly admirable about an old guard band reaching the heights the absolute madmen have reached in recent years. Similarly to Varathron's 'Patriarchs of Evil', Taphonomia Aeternitatis & Totschläger are such commendable displays of evocative metal doing their ambitious intent true justice. Silenius' vocal chops are genuinely mind-blowing this late into his career.
Immortal glory & everlasting peace at last.
    Abigor is eternal.
    Hail PK.
Damn, just struck me that the last time that I commented down here was over 8 months ago with your insightful takes on Deicide. The stars seemed to have aligned, now that BJ-Dawg has finally delivered the long awaited goods of delivering his own magnum opus in the form of an Glenn Benton interview today. Neat.
Went of the deep end, while having no metal picks to recommend at the moment (life & such).
One of these days, I'll pop up more often paying tribute to the almighty Jiub!
Respect for the never-ending grind & hails to the niche king!
Infernal hails & eternal gratitude Jiub!

With these Therion comparisons lately we might need a Therion episode. Or a more general episode on bands connected to Dragon Rouge and Thomas Karlsson.

I think I did one like a billion years ago on Episode 23, can't remember if it was any good though. Their first three albums are some of my favorite death metal ever, and I've come around to appreciating some of their later stuff as well, specifically Lepaca Kliffoth and the Lemuria / Sirius B combo. I'm also pretty big into Carbonized and I kind of see their second album as being sort of a weird early Therion release bridging Beyond Sanctorum and Symphony Masses.

@@radiofreeinnsmouth1337 well, they might be one of my favourite bands rn, and definitely my pick for the best symphonic/neoclassical band. Even in their lowest they seem to be maybe the only symphonic metal band to *understand* classical symphonic music.

I have to confess that I wrote them off in the late 90's or early 00's when I first saw the cover art for A Fallen Temple. This was Napalm Records' heyday and they put posed topless females on everything.

One of my favorite bands right here. The 90s shit had a whole other otherworldly charm to it but I still enjoyed their 2000s work. If you ask me things only really started to go downhill with The Great Mass and Titan where they started leaning more and more into the symphonic bullshit, but even those albums at least had some good songs. Past that I find it hard to believe the Septicflesh we have now is even the same band.
"We got an even bigger orchestra this time" yeah but that doesn't make it better, like just go back to Communion or something at least.
