    As the years went by the public perception of Kirk became him being a warm, funny guy, possibly due to Shatner and Kirk becoming more similar both on screen and in the fan consciousness, and due to the scattering of out and out comedy episodes. But particularly in the first season, he's really kind of an ethical hardass. He's constantly holding his crew to the highest possible standards, but also visibly beating himself up inside as he really feels the weight of his every decision.

    • @michaelfinlay6341
      @michaelfinlay6341 2 роки тому +6

      Agreed. Shatner was a trained Shakespearean actor. I think the parodies overtook his more understated work. He always understood that Kirk was more man than hero.

    • @moviescatsmargs
      @moviescatsmargs 11 місяців тому +3

      Shatner's natural talent as a comedian and a ham led to the character leaning more to the humorous side as the show went on. Kirk was originally written as a space age version of Horatio Hornblower, particularly for his sense of morality and justice. His distaste for Stiles' bigotry and how he dresses him down in front of everyone really reflects this old school style of leadership.

    This episode is closely based on the film, "The Enemy Below", set in World War II, about a battle between a destroyer and an enemy submarine, with the USS Enterprise cast as the destroyer and the Romulan vessel as the U-boat.

    The plastic model of the Romulan ship has very large airtight areas. And I can confirm for a fact, that if you take the model to the bottom of the pool, it "flies" really well up to the surface!

    I like when writers point out that a different culture can view things differently than we are used to. If it was savage by Vulcan standards, we wouldn't grasp how violent the Romulans could be.

      From Babylon 5:
      "They are a primitive people. What is it that makes the humans so special? They fight, they argue, they are ruled by passions and fears."
      "Yes, that is their strength. They do not see conformity. They do not surrender. Out of their differences comes symmetry; their unique capacity to fight against impossible odds. Hurt them, and they always come back stronger. The passions we deplore have taken them to their place in the stars, and will propel them to a great destiny. Their only weakness is that they do not recognize their own greatness. They forget that they have come to this place through two million years of evolution, struggle, and blood. They are better than they think, nobler than they know. They carry within them the capacity to walk among the stars like Giants. They are the future, and we have much to learn from them."

    By having the first major Romulan commander be played by Mark Lenard as an exhausted, war-weary veteran who doesn't respect his government, Star Trek was able to introduce a fearsome, yet nuanced enemy in the Romulans, a society that rejected the pacifism of Vulcan, but had an honorable warrior ethos...yet which also showed a society whose government was becoming more corrupt and totalitarian, coming to value cunning and deceit over and above bravery and honor.
    This development is carried forward as plot arc through the Next Gen episodes still ahead, which I hope you enjoy!

  • @herrzimm

    For the Romulan, it wasn't a "die with honor" situation. It was a "die to preserve the Empire".
    If he had been captured, it would have gotten back to the Romulans (through spies) who would have launched a full-scale invasion. By dying with his ship and crew, the Romulans would have assumed (Correctly) that the Federation was smarter and tougher than they assumed, so they wouldn't invade. Had he killed Kirk and the Enterprise, it would have been reported and war plans would be put into place. Had he captured Kirk or the Enterprise, they would view humans as "being weak" and started to invade instantly.
    Keep in mind, there is now a "gap" in monitoring the Neutral Zone at this point. Capturing crew or ship would tip the balance into war. A lost ship (exploded) left enough room for caution and suspicion of capability and strength to avoid a full-out war. Escaping without losing the ship would have STARTED the war, with the Enterprise being the "first ship casualty of war".

I’m a sucker for the action ones, but really love the character stuff with the Romulan Commander and Kirk constantly trying to out-think or out-manoeuvre each other. It is a bit random having Stiles on the Bridge, as he’s only in this one episode. There's a moment in this ep that even I who've watched this episode a couple of hundreds of times had forgotten; since the passing of Nichelle Nichols it is being shared on facebook ~ In "Balance of Terror" there is a scene that we may pass over lightly as modern viewers but is important to consider in the context of the times. This episode first aired in December of 1966, 56 years ago.
    With the Enterprise damaged by the Romulans' nuclear device detonation at close proximity, navigator Lt. Stiles is relieved by Captain Kirk to rush to Phaser Control and keep the weapons operational at a critical moment. The Captain orders Lt. Uhura to take over Mr. Stiles' station at navigation, which she immediately does.
    At first blush, this may seem like just another action scene with the crew responding to the crisis. But why does the camera follow Uhura so closely and linger on her as she assumes the navigation station with Sulu looking on?
    Consider the scene in the context of 1966. A black woman is portrayed as a professional, an officer in Starfleet, skilled at her job with the complete confidence of her Captain and her peers. She responds quickly and competently to orders without fanfare.
    This is where Star Trek shines and where so many others fail. The scene is ahead of its time but is played perfectly straight, with just a lingering camera shot for emphasis. No obnoxious moralizing, no heavy-handed finger-wagging, or clumsy brute force to spoil the effort.
    Star Trek showed us a better version of ourselves, one that we could aspire to, and it showed it to us in the best way; realistic people behaving realistically in a futuristic setting, without regard to superficial differences. And it was effective and groundbreaking precisely because of that. ~
    I met her at a Trek convention in the late 80s or early 90s and while I was in a group of fans getting things signed heard her talking about how Martin Luther King jr persuaded her to stay on the show. I still remember the tears in her eyes as she spoke about it. On another note; Mark Lenard told me; and several hundred others I should add, my first Star Trek dirty joke which involved his wee lad and a certain James T. Kirk. Both legends; sadly missed and always treasured. I feel so priviliged to have met and spoken with both, kerk (no relation ;-) ) hiraeth

    They knew what the ships looked like. Stiles said they were described as having birds painted on them. They said they didn't have ship to ship communication. But could still see them. Enterprise covers some of that. Mark Leonard is the only one to play a Romulan, Vulcan, and Klingon (in ST: TMP). I think that still stands. Hopefully, you'll be watching "Tomorrow is Yesterday" in the near future. It's one of my favorites.

    It was pretty cool as a child to see Martine and Tomlinson, an engaged couple, working side-by-side like that, in a scifi, "wartime" episode. Any other show would have sent her to an on-ship shelter, but not here. I know the original series gets flak sometimes for sexism (not wholly undeserved), but moments like this back the in the 60's and 70's were awesome!

I wish later writers would have looked to this episode more. Their Romulans wouldn't have been so one dimensional if they did.

Sadly, I think they had Tomlinson die to have more of an emotional impact on the audience since he was going to get married. It showed that War has its casualties physical as well as emotional as Angela, his Bride to be found out in the conclusion of the episode. Truely a Star Trek Classic episode.

Between calling this episode the 8th episode of season 1 and all the mishaps with episode titles for the Gravity Falls videos, it's clear that are some glaring flaws with where she's getting some of her info.

    Anyhow, Balance of Terror is a perfect blend of cheese nonsense ("Be quiet in space!") and really great tense drama. The terrible VFX technology of the 1960's and low budget meant they needed to focus on the characters during the battle, rather than the pew pew lasers action that the modern series can focus on a bit more.

    Mark Lenard has playing a Romulan, a Vulcan, and a Klingon. That reminds me that Tony Todd has played a Klingon, a Hirogen, and a human; Vaughn Armstrong has been Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, Vidiian, Borg, Hirogan, Kreetassan, and both a human from our universe and the Mirror Universe; Jeffrey Combs has been multiple Ferengi, as well as Vorta, Andorian, a supercomputer, and other alien races; and there have also been many other actors with multiple roles. This proud tradition was started by Mark Lenard and Majel Leigh Hudec Barrett Roddenberry - who played Number One in TOS first pilot, Nurse Chapel, Lwaxana Troi, and multiple roles on TAS, including the Starfleet computer, which she also did on TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT & Star Trek (2009).

    14:06 James Blish published or wrote the novelizations of the TV show episodes. He took lots of liberties, including sparing Commodore Decker by preventing him from kamikazing a shuttle craft into the Doomsday Machine. Other differences abound.
    Star Trek the Next Generation was written for a younger broader, and to be frank, less intelligent audience. The themes are easily understood, but the physics of the show's setting changed, as did the psychologies of the aliens. It's junk for those reasons, and not the whole Kirk-vs-Picard thing. Here the Enterprise is clearly a naval vessel with some scientific capabilities.
