    The video has given me the courage to attempt this . I like the radio, added Bluetooth to it, and it sounds terrific in my car.

    TIP: i cut the top 3 small legs off with a dremel, used a soldering gun to remove and push the rest out! cleaned the holes from solder and popped the new potentiometer that i bought from ebay! HOLY HELL sound system sounds amazingggg!

    For those who want to try do the same thing. I managed to get mine to work.
    I did the following:
    Removed the rotary encoder (I would not do this again it was a unnecessary step)
    Opened the encoder in the same way shown here.
    removed the rotary ring and cleaned it with methylated spirits (alcohol).
    Cleaned the copper brusher arms again with Meth.
    Blew them dry.
    Tested the rotary switch with a buzzer (multimeter).
    The centre pin is common, as you rotate the disk there is contact to the side pins.
    there are 3 states. No contact between any of the pins. Contact between the centre and one of the side pins (alternating between side pins). Contact between all there pins.
    The two pins on the opposite side short then you press the button down (on/off)
    I did not pull up the copper "brush" pins.
    I put it together the same way shown here.
    Using a toothpick I used a tiny amount of superglue on the sides. I noticed that when I played with the switch there was a hairline opening between the 3 layers. I compressed the switch added glue and sprayed it with activator.
    Tested it again. Reassembled the radio and it worked.
    The switch was 100% dead before I started.
    The switch was difficult to de-solder. the tracks are extremely thin and pads right up against some SMD components. I had accidentally shorted 2 of the pins while desoldering (I tested the points for shorts before reinstalling the switch)
    If you can buy and replace the switch I would suggest you do that instead.
    As far as difficulty 1-10 I'd give this a 7.
    I honestly think I was lucky I got it to work.

    Thank you, had to be very careful but it worked on my audio 10 cd. I didn't use a scratch pen, I rubbed it with some IPA and gently scratched all over with the tip of a small knife.
    To anyone trying this, the knobs may have to be pulled pretty hard to get them off.

    So I watched this masterpiece of a video, loved every second of it, however I can't figure out one tiny thing. Where is the clicky noise coming from? My knob was erratic so I contact cleanered it and it became better for a few days then went bad again, and then became completely FREE of clicking. Are those pins inside the encoder that you lifted up responsible for the clicky noise, the one associated with turning the knob?

      thanks ❤️
      soo - the spinny bit is made of black plastic - has the metallic coating, and a cog-like structure
      that cog-like structure rubs against a plastic pin held on a spring - this latter part sits on the motherboard side of the encoder - probably became loose/lost or disintegrated completely 🧐

    • @shaazy
      @shaazy 2 роки тому

      @@Darieee The plastic pin you mention, is that the one you point at 7:28?

    • @shaazy
      @shaazy 2 роки тому

      @@Darieee So, I dove in following this awesome video. My volume knob felt completely free with no clicking and as sad as I am to report this, the rubber surrounding the shaft that spins, which attaches to the shiny disc on the INSIDE, has disintegrated. I can rotate the shaft, but the disc doesn't spin with it. Any idea how I may be able to fix this? I feel I shouldn't put it back together just yet, knowing how fragile those pins are as you mentioned.

      probably time to order a new 5pin encoder I'm afraid ☹️

    • @shaazy
      @shaazy 2 роки тому +1

      @@Darieee So I'm a total noob at this, was pretty much popping my cherry on the Becker. Question: do you think I can order an encoder and just use the top metal part of it with the spinny greasy wheel and keep the original bottom green part, thereby not needing any risky heating or soldering maneuvers? It's a Becker 1350 btw.

    Working avionics 737 engine harness,I slipped and impaled my finger. As I pulled away blood squirts about 4 feet as I turned. A guy beside me nearly passed out. It quickly stopped bleeding.

    🤣 that's was both entertaining and informative thanks! I was wondering how you added bluetooth though. I'll have a scroll thru your videos maybe you've already made a how to.

      I have some early early versions up indeed - but since I started doing it 'professionally', I stopped posting videos on the topic
      as long as it helps pay rent ..

    My knob was clicking but now it spins freely no click. I have the exact deck in my 96 MB C220 I read that I need a new volume control from clarion 016001001 but it’s discontinued…

    My exactly same radio *Becker 1490* have a problem with the "other" function of the knob. the ON-OFF. There is power but the unit turns ON very difficult after trying many times (same to turn it OFF). As I said i our previous contact, I cannot send you the radio to USA from Athens, Greece.! I am sure you can suggest or you know the "FIX". I have opened the unit (not the encoder) and was very warm when radio played for 2 hrs...Please help.Thanks from Athens.

      I'm over up north in Romania, actually - just for the knob indeed, shipping would be too much of a hassle
      If you want bluetooth as well, I could fix the knob on the house for you
      If not - take the radio to an electronics repair shop, and tell them you need "a new rotary encoder" for your radio
