Hi Anshuman, the Old gen Endeavour has a Torsen LSD which multiplies the traction at the spinning wheel and delivers it to the wheel with traction. Therefore if the grip at the spinning wheel is 0, the power delivered to the wheel with traction is also 0.The Fortuner also has a Torsen center differential so will work the same way. Thats why for the fortuner also there is no forward force generated. The multiplying factor for a torsen diff is anywhere between 2x to 3x. Torsen LSD is very good for distributing power on road but very poor for off road. Lots of sports cars have a torsen LSD.
We just got Airlocker installed in Old Endy and we were shocked to see an open diff, only the 2.5 had the LSD, even the diff oil specs suggest the same.
Nicely put. Torsen diff. does not work when traction in spinning wheel is 0, like wheel in the air as in video. As long as there is little traction, it will work. Trick is to gently apply brakes to trick spinning wheel into thinking there is some traction. Then torque will transfer to other wheel with traction.
@Vishnu_R You explained it wrong. You told Grip 0 then Power 0. But in case of Fortuner in the video the grip 0 but power 100 to one wheel. To work the Torsen Diff the tire with grip should have to spin a little......but If it is Stationary the ratio between the two output wheel will become 0 like (0:5) does not exists mathematically. Torsen control the slip for no grip when both the wheel is rotating. In case of Fortuner as you told there is Torsen Differential in Central Differential..but the front wheels' shaft is stationary. So the ration between Rear Wheels' Shaft & Front Wheels' shaft become 0. And the Rear Wheels' shaft rotating and by the Rear Differential whole the power is going to the Wheel with no grip.
Lovely video sir, it enhanced my knowledge about the differential system in the off road cars and also acknowledges about the capabilities of SUV's in india. Great video Thank you sir.
Great and informative video, thanks! It's great to see real world comparisons. My experience off road has been similar - limited slip differentials add little to no value over open. They do seem better on wet roads though. Thanks again
Superbly explained and demonstrated this is one of the best video for this topic please make more videos of this type so people gain more practical knowledge love it
Brilliant video sir I literally sat down with a pen and paper to note what exactly happens in which system. Thanks for the video and hope to see some more of this type :-)
this MLD system is really cool almost as good as manual locking differential assuming it's good at unlocking as well and doesn't remain locked when not needed
This is a very good video. It can be called as the part-1, make a part-2(if there isn't any) and include cars like gurkha, new endeavour, new fortuner and various german crossovers.
Suprising and frankly dangerous. Why would manufacturers provide a LSD which doesn't divert power to the wheel with traction? The abs based wheel locking on awd softroaders work much better than this.
Hey bro, recently I've found that Storme doesn't have LSD even. It has open differential only. That's confirmed from my side. We actually opened the differential and checked, coz i was going to install MLD in it, which didn't work due to minor size issues.
Thanks a lot for sharing... Very informative.. Cleared my misconception about LSD. MLD is the best.. But not suitable for front diff due to sudden locking with a jerk
a good teaching session, you got good skills to explain things. thanks. but why didn't you show us how the last SUV behaved. still a nice way of making a video. I'm impressed
awesome elaboration sir.!! please try to bring the force gurkha if I can manage since it has locking differentails in both the axles .would love to see it
The vcross seemed like it can come out by seeing it's slight movement! That's nice ,I had a fight with one guy in UA-cam ,he was judging vcross for the reason that it has lesser torque than the safari ,but it can be clearly seen that the safari can't perform even with LSDs ,but still many Tata fanboys are like Tata is the best ,I don't know why are even trying to lower the fame of Isuzu, after all many of their masterpiece (especially the trooper) have been used in the places where even Land Rover defenders have conquered! Also another proof that why the vcross is a better off-road vehicle,it can be seen crossing most trails even better than the new fortuner! I don't know why but most Indians treat Isuzus like Chinese cars!
Storme 4x4 is a capable vehicle even in stock form, first explore places where and if you find it lacking, only then go for upgrades like MLD. Contact Eaton Dealer in Delhi for the part and I dont know where to get it installed for Tata cars, for Mahindra dealers do install it.
Great video and I think you have a very accurate assessment. Looks like both BLD and lockers are WAY better than LSD. Toyota Atrac is probably better than LSD too.
LSD works better on the road. I saw a video where this guy oiled up a steel bar, put one tire on it, and the open diff would spin on that bar, slowly moving forward or moving the bar. For LSD, the tire would spin fast to begin with, than start moving quickly. LSD seems to work better when there isn't a tire completely off the ground.
Hello ansuman sir Any m locker for isuzu available in india. Can getaway's mld installed in isuzu.or any other options What will be their price for locker in rear
hey man good informative video. can you tell me about the ride quality and comfort level on the bench seat in isuzu dmax. im sure abot the front seats are comfy enough for a long road trips.
Fantastic video. for close to 2 years i looked for details on how the thar MLD worked but no one i spoke to had an explanation as you have shown in your video. The mahindra guys too wont know details like this. if possible do post a video on how this is disengaged. ( i read you have to reverse it to disengage MLD)
Couple of questions: 1) From your video it seems you are in 2WD - can you confirm this ? i ask because mahindra says this works only on 4WD which i believed until now. 2) This MLD is present on front as well as rear differentials right ? or only rear In the 3 years i have owned my thar i have never heard the clank of the lock engaging. maybe i need to ask someone else to drive and i observe the locking from outside.
MLD is a mechanical system fitted in rear differential, it does not have any connection with 4x4 activation. If your Thar is 3 years old, chances are that your car does not have MLD, pre facelift Thar(with the old Black dashboard) did not have MLD.
You are right. I was confused between AutoLocking Hubs and MLD. Pity that mahindra makes such a poor job of documenting what is provided in the vehicle & the service chaps are even more poorly informed.
Arent the LSD is safari and Endy brake actuated. A quick jab on the breaks will slight slow the slow wheel and send the torque to the wheel with traction. Can you test with that also. Eager to see the result. Thanks
Active traction control will work here in slow crawling, in back to back osbtacles the system will get confused, we experimented the same last week with Jeep Wrangler. Torque on demand is about front to rear power delivery, not sideways, sideways is handled by Torque vectoring.
I think a cheap and better way would be to slip brakes, as it will be easier for rear wheels. you can tie two wires to hand brake cables and just pull them when you get struck. I don't know about front wheels. but maybe maybe we can put a iron rod in Rim and chassis and stop wheel from spinning but we''ll have to remove it as soon as it reaches traction.
@anshuman bishnoi Good video..however a couple of quick questions ( pardon my ignorance as I am not an expert in this) 1. In practical use, with 4wd available..will someone ever get stuck in either of these vehicles? 2. Also would you be able to check how a scorpio would behave under similar circumstance? Thanks in advance...
1. Even with 4x4 engaged, if one tyre from each axle does not have traction car will not move forward without difflock. 2. Scorpio has open diffs, it will behave exactly like Isuzu V-Cross in this video.
Sir, your show will be 100 times more entertaining, if you take your vehicles to some sort of rain forest type instead of always trying to climb hillocks in desert type terrain. Rain forest soils are much more slippery and so you can test the full potential of your latest generation SUV's.
@@Anshyuman hi, i have checked with 4-5 eaton distributors listed on their site. But none of them deal in MLD, can you suggest any distributor where i can find one
to a student like me.. a layman.. this video just cleared all my doubts and confusions about diffrentials :)

We just got Airlocker installed in Old Endy and we were shocked to see an open diff, only the 2.5 had the LSD, even the diff oil specs suggest the same.
Pajero SFX's LSD is the only one I have seen that diverts some power to the stuck wheel.
Nicely put. Torsen diff. does not work when traction in spinning wheel is 0, like wheel in the air as in video. As long as there is little traction, it will work. Trick is to gently apply brakes to trick spinning wheel into thinking there is some traction. Then torque will transfer to other wheel with traction.

This video is the answer to all my queries!!
This video is how I made my gf motivated for Thar.
Are you still bf gf or breakup
Lovely video sir,
it enhanced my knowledge about the differential system in the off road cars and also acknowledges about the capabilities of SUV's in india.
Great video
Thank you sir.
This is the best video on explaining Open Differential, Limited Slip Differential and Mechanical Lock Differential.
Only few will understand, but really informative video.
Great and informative video, thanks! It's great to see real world comparisons. My experience off road has been similar - limited slip differentials add little to no value over open. They do seem better on wet roads though.
Thanks again
Like Shikhar says, it answer my questions as well. That's all I wanted was a side-by-side look - so good job fellas

Thanks and sure
Brilliant video sir I literally sat down with a pen and paper to note what exactly happens in which system. Thanks for the video and hope to see some more of this type :-)
Very very important and nicely made video. Had to search through tonnes of BS videos to get to this! To the point and crisp video. Congratulations!
Glad it was helpful!
Great info & explanation.... I learned something new with your video Keep doing it....
this MLD system is really cool almost as good as manual locking differential assuming it's good at unlocking as well and doesn't remain locked when not needed
Short, crisp, to the point. Brilliant job 👍
The Thar engages diff. lock when it senses wheelspin. When does it disengage the diff. lock. Also, why was it stopped at 2:55?
now i got why the fortuner failed in climbing ... 😎😎😎
Thanks a ton .. this video help me lot to understand about MLD.... going to have my MLD kit installed soon in my TUV 300.
vishal hans is it possible bro... If so den suggest me..
TUV300.. ? Are you serious?
Simple and nicely explained.. 👍
What happened to fortuner when you locked center differentil?
This is a very good video. It can be called as the part-1, make a part-2(if there isn't any) and include cars like gurkha, new endeavour, new fortuner and various german crossovers.
Thanx so much for teaching us the difference between all the differentials and vehicles it is very helpfull..and amazing as well.🙏
LSD has never helped me off-road, fails to work all the time. TATA xenon!
Don't know how to overcome this!
Thanks Anshuman for explaining with a practical demonstration.
Good video , now i know why a diiff lock is a must off road .
Suprising and frankly dangerous. Why would manufacturers provide a LSD which doesn't divert power to the wheel with traction? The abs based wheel locking on awd softroaders work much better than this.
Best explanation with marvelous illustrations.

Thank you Bhai.. explained well.
You could have included the video of the last fortuner with central diff in locked mode too.. Thanks again 💕
Hi Anshuman, very informative Videos! Would you know any diff upgrades for Hexa 4x2 rear diff. Can it be upgraded to add diff locker?
Love your videos man
Would love to see more of vcross and fortuner
God speed, a nice and basic video for new 4x4s'
Awesome video!!! Keep it up mate.
great job bro keeping posting such informative videos......
This video clears are my doubts. Now iam interested to fit in to my safari EX.
Yep, have open diffs on the truck I just bought. Sure miss my G80 auto locker. Made a world of difference as would any other factory locker.
An LSD is for performance vehicles. A Locker is for off-road vehicles. Simple.
Mad video, got some good info , cheers
Thanks a lot for sharing... Very informative.. Cleared my misconception about LSD. MLD is the best.. But not suitable for front diff due to sudden locking with a jerk
Well the best one is selectable locker, MLD does not operate as required at time, but yes compared to LSD it is better for offroading.
Thank you for explaining it so beautifully!
a good teaching session, you got good skills to explain things. thanks. but why didn't you show us how the last SUV behaved.
still a nice way of making a video. I'm impressed

Your video is the first search result on google for MLD
It's very surprising the Storme 400's LSD and Endeavour LSD did not work. Maybe try running them with 4WD and see, it may work.
Very well explained ✌️👌👍

why LSD is not working in 2wd , is it only active in 4wd ?
+firdous pm LSD has no connection with 4wd system. I have no explanationation for why it does not work, this thing had me wondering for months.
in this video LSD is no difference with Open-Diff.
Active traction control is not available in Hexa, just Engine traction control, the pseudo modes are just to effect power delivery.
does these thar differentials are same as which comes in mahindra 550 first generation??
It's very surprising the Storme 400's LSD did not work.
Is that possible to upgrade this with MLd, new generation??
Should I buy safari or not?
MLD can be fitted to Storme.
क्या ये बहुत मंहगा पड़ेगा? कहाँ से करवाना चाहिए? मैं हरियाणा से हूँ।

Hi! Nyc video. I want to ask how good is 4wd scorpio?
that's very informative....can we install after market locking rear differentials on scorpio 4x2 or 4x4 or v cross??
Yes u can go for arb locker or lmada
but i think on tar roads d open differential is better?so MLD is gud only for off roaders, ryt?
Very good clears my doubts
Very nice explanation 👍
where do u shoot
Does thar crde come with MLD as standard?

Rear seat is comfortable and has good space, just a bit too upright for my taste and it does not recline.
Where I can buy front diff locker for Pajero 1992 exceed?

Can I install 3 MLD on the three differentials in an all wheel drive?.

Arent the LSD is safari and Endy brake actuated. A quick jab on the breaks will slight slow the slow wheel and send the torque to the wheel with traction. Can you test with that also. Eager to see the result. Thanks
LSD is never brake actuated, it works on the basis of wheelspeed difference. Do not fall for online comments, in real life it does not work.
seems like open differential or worn out clutch packs on the storm!
Great, what about those vehicles with torque on demand 4wd & traction control? what kind of differential they have? If only we have one

dear admin, how about xuv500..?? does it have MLD or LSD.And how good it is compared to others in its segment..??
XUV has open diffs, no LSD, no MLD, no Articulation. XUV 500 is good only for light offroading.
great video...
good explaination..liked it.
Awesome demo

Does thar come with diff lockers standard?
Only rear Autolocker(MLD)

New Thar does not have centre differential, its part time 4wd meaning only transfercase no center diff
