Do I need a max lens mod? No. Do I want one? ABSOLUTELY YES 🙌🏻
thought the same, now that i own one. .. not that much. if they urprade gopro firmware for more options in the future then maybe it´s worth it. you can´t night photo mode with it, no burst photo. very limited options, bought it at 70€ with subscrition in gopro web site. not worth the 70€, much less 100€.

David. Pro tip: leave the front lens cap on when installing the Max Lens Mod on the camera and then slide it off. It helps protect it from finger grease.

I totally agree with what you said. The GoPro Max 360 came in very intimidating. I just afraid I won’t know how to use it. I won’t know how to edit and I’m scared to buy it. I’ve built a lot of skills using the regular GoPro and I’m a lot more comfortable with them. When I think about it though it does it make sense to spend all the money that it would take to buy a hero 9 plus the max lens mod when I could just buy the go pro max 360... Try Hard. Take Chances... love it

Fun Max Lens mod hack: if you want to film vertical but don’t have a vertical mount, just put the orientation lock on while vertical and then mount it horizontal. It will film vertical while laying horizontally. Works the other way round too 👍

btw, you can turn the max lens mode ON when you actually don't have one installed and the horizon will be levelled. Why nobody says that?!

it only locks until about 45 degrees instead of 360 but still good to know
@@thykingdomcome1 For me it locks fully, but the video is shaking like crazy (mountainbiking). I'm not a pro and didn't test that feature fully, I've just mentioned the possibility of that.

I don't think so. It's pretty fisheye to be able to put an ND filter on there!
can you get the media mod and do some microphone testing for those of us that vlog with a gropro and need good audio?

@@DavidManningvlog awesome! as you know AUDIO is everything on youtube. we are still rocking the hero7 black with external audio adapter and EDUTIGE ETM-001 Microphone and actually love the setup! The hero 8's media mod was less than impressive and we are hopefully for the hero 9 to be our next camera. The tests we would like to see is.
1. how are the onboard mics on the media mod
2. can you enable both front and back mics on the media mod at the same time? I might be talking from behind the camera and would like to hear the person in front of it as well
3. test external mics and how to mount them. possibly get the very small (but good) EDUTIGE ETM-001 Microphone and figure out how to mount it and let us know how it sounds. You can test other larger mics as well but this one has been so good to us

you never mentioned how with the max lens mod you cant go past 2.7k 60fps, are you able to shut it off from the camera or GoPro app itself and use 4k 60fps or 5k 30fps with the mod still on?

Max lens mod for sure!
After much testing; the Max lens mod on the HERO 9 is amazing!!! However, the video quality from the 5k (without MAX lens) is leaps and bounds better than the 2.7k from the MAX lens mod. With the image censor just being upgraded to 20 MP, I dont forese this getting much better until GoPro releases the next image sensor with even more megapixels...
I probably go with the “max lens”.
I owed gopro max 360 and really did Not like it. Its koo that it’s a 360 cámara but quality it’s not the same it’s more blurry and not reliable for vlogs.
I would go for go pro 10 and max lens more quality in videos and stability and clear images for video vlogs
Its basically useless for skydiving though. I've had to return mine because it fogs up even in warm weather.
Damn! Are you getting fog between the lens and the GoPro? Like where it mounts? Or are you getting it fogged up on the front element of the lens?
So is it supposed to be a fish-eye lens, or is it supposed to give you a wider field of view while eliminating the fish-eye effect?
Wider field of view, not much of a fish eye effect, but the main feature being that you can then have full 360 degree horizon lock🙌
David - the Gopole hi torque thumb screwed are not available on Amazon anymore. Any help with a new link?
Looks like GoPole isn’t selling the thumbscrews by themselves anymore. There’s one on Amazon that has two wing bits, one on both sides. I picked on up and it seems to be working pretty well so far👍

Great review as always David. Im looking to take the leap into the 360 action camera world. I would love to see a video from you comparing the Insta 360 x 2 against the GoPro Max, as these are the two 360 cameras I'm looking at right now.
A 360 camera for action won't make sense until it can take the punishment a standard GoPro can.
at 8:20 ish when you said "when the reframed footage looks as good..." that right there is why I sold my 360 camera and went back to the standard gopro models. And yes.. WHEN the reframed footage of a 360 camera looks as good as current standard action cameras, i will transition back to the 360.

So with the Max lens mod, you can turn the camera sideways and it stays level. Why not just not turn the camera sideways?
Situations where you're not holding it. Chest/head mount setups or maybe you have it mounted on the side of your motorcycle. Instead of the camera leaning over and the whole shot leaning over, you see how much the bike is leaning over because the camera stays perfectly level. It's a super cool looking effect👍

Without the lens you have the camera set to linear. Why? I was hoping to see a difference in Superview with the lens on and off.

The issue I have with the max lens and the 360 is I use my GoPro Hero 9 for scuba diving and can't use the protective case with a max lens.
Yeah, that's a bummer. What about a dome case? Might fit in one of those!

The only thing you didn't cover is the fact that there is no 4k in superview with the max lens... which for me= fail. I'm sure the hero 10 will have it... and we will all go buy it. lol

A bit late to the party, but I got the Hero 9 originally for water sports and climbing so it made sense. But now that I'm riding my electric skateboard I kinda wish I had a Max to make the pole disappear. So I'm just getting the mod for the stabilization.

I got the go pro 10 and message u before I got it and now im wondering should I get the max mod lens. because personally I use 4k 100fps and wide as possible which is not super wide because I can't have it at that setting and I still find it to be so wide that the centre is far away especially for my dog walks. like the dogs are in front and in centre and they look small and not right. I think I might get this.

For me definitely the hero 9 max lens mod!
One can do the 360˚ / go around WITHOUT the Max Mod lens. Just put your gopro in Max Lens mode + lock the horizon and voilà...........saving 100$.
So, in short. Not worth it. ;)
How you get so crisp video with the lens mod mine is not that clear at all I try change stuff in the setting with not improvement, did you did a some color correction?

360 futage you can deed it and without max len. the only gave us that lens is to do it with widest futage. test it ... tick the max len on gopro 9 without max len and then try to record a futage and make 360 move.

The GoPro Max is superb! it is the future technology...unfortunately as David says when you reframe a 360 video the highest quality you will get is 1080
Does the max lens mod have any other benefits? Like sharper image or something. I’m unlikely to be flipping my camera. I just want super sharp video.

Nice review as always! Was hoping for some surf footage, curious if it’s worth making the extra purchase for the water shots. I imagine if you had a bite mount and held it out back at your face it’d keep the wave in shot pretty well. Do you feel like it’s secure enough for more extreme situations like that?
It's for sure good to go for surfing and more extreme situations, and I'll get that proven real soon in some surf videos!

I really wanted that Max lens, but by the time I saw the email Gopro sent, it was out of stock. One day... One day! That would work for me though. 36o Camera? Me, my PC, and laptop aren't ready for that just yet...

Lens not necessary. There is in camera Max Mode with same results, lens is wider angle only.

@@kkelroyy Yeah, I set it on Superview by default for my Custom setting. When I turn on Max mode, it crops a lot of the shot. I'm good with Superview, but I would also like horizon lock on a wide shot as opposed to just on linear. Right now, since I don't do much Superview is fine. I'll save my $70 for now.

Watched this one again and I really want one now. Like I'm starting to think I NEED ONE. My canoeing and kayaking videos would be so much better if I could have that amazing horizon lock feature... I'm putting it on my Christmas list. But I'll need a GoPro Hero 9 too. Or maybe I should just ask for the GoPro MAX? Thoughts?
You probably already made a decision, but the Max is a bit of a pain in the butt to edit compared to the regular gopros. The quality also isn't nearly as good, since it's 5k shared between the two sensors. Also, reliability is a concern given the two sensors/pair of lenses as it leaves more doors open for accidents.
Dave I know it does its job but don't you ever think wben will it stop because the action cameras are getting bigger and bigger and I thought the whole idea was that they were small for a reason or wee as I would put it 😊🏴

That’s what I’m thinking too! If the GP9 makes sense for most of what you do, then the MAX lens is an awesome addition. If you need a 360 camera, you probably already know it!

Is there a little storage case for the GoPro Hero 9 lens while I have the Max lens mod on my GoPro? The silicone case for the Max lens doesn't fit nicely with the regular lens, and I want to protect my regular lens while I'm using the Max lens.

Sucks if you buy the max lens mod for the GoPro 10 and you can't even use it until November when the update rolls out to support it. Why would they sell the lens if you can't even use it yet?

Yep, just a normal glass lens, so they'll do nothing as far as ND or UV filtering. And because it's a fairly fish eye lens, you won't be able to add ND filters either😬

I think the purpose is more so you can get a super view (like the max) but without the sacrifice of image quality
