Looking back I'm always amazed at how they do so much with so few pieces in old sets. Such a different world looking back as someone who got back into Lego through the more adult oriented sets. Old Lego is really all about using large elements in straight forward ways as opposed to really dense and creative uses of small pieces. This was my single most desired Christmas gift ever as a kid. Glad it held up.
Love the raised baseplate to this set. It’s a shame how few sets come with raised baseplates these days. Especially since they do such a great job with the colors and designs of the base plates. They need to bring them back. The last time I remember seeing a set with a raised base plate was that alpha team set of Ogel’s winter skull base. Feel free to let me know if there is a set newer than that that contains raised baseplates.
Totally agree, baseplates were the bomb, I really can't think of any after that set, the Adventurers Orient Expedition line had some which was 2003, but I don't think theres been any after that
The sub actually has a trunk with the 4x4 hinge at the back, which lifts up - it has slopes to make it easier for the crane claws to gather the stored crystals. The chain conveyor belt also moves the opposite direction to deposit a crystal into an opened container (not sure if this was mentioned, I may have missed it). This is my favorite set ever and inspired my love of large transparent pieces and raised baseplates. It was my first large set ever, a great Christmas present, I still love to see it!
I got this for my 6th birthday, my parents hid it in the trunk of the car on a 1000 mile road trip to Montana and gave it to me at a campground. Sadly wasnt allowed to put it together there (for good reason) Im 34 now, Great early memory.
This was the only base set I got for any of the 90s themes. Loved it, but I was still at the age sets stayed built for a few months, then my brother and me would cannibalize them for other builds. I'll have to rebuy it and a few of the other Aquanauts and space themes someday.
Great set. I picked up the smaller base with the trans green last year. I've been on the lookout for one of these in good shape. Only thing I don't like from this is the minifig face printing. I would rather have the plain smiley face tbh.
You are indeed correct about this set being among the first to have an octopus before the Pirates theme did. Even then, it hasn't appeared in its origin color of black in seven years, with its last appearance being in a Pirates III set (70410). It also appeared in a bioluminescent color and in Metru red (New Dark red), but only in six sets or fewer. This was also the first system-style set to have 1x8 Technic beams (in black here), even if they were only the variation with studs on top at that time. Studless beams as a whole wouldn't be introduced until '97. For all of the yellow and transparent blue elements introduced with the Aquazone theme, the 1x9x11 doors in the latter of those two colors, and the 2x8x12 door frame and 10x10x4 octagonal cockpit in yellow are still exclusive to this set, and the 2x4x3 1/3 hinge panel in that color only ever appeared in a concurrently released Unitron set (1789) that year.

not sure if it counts as a baseplate but the last piece that resembles it was loot island in 2006, also I think Indiana jones sets may have had them
