- A song by Brian McNeill.
"You showed us, one and all, the courage you could call from the tears that would not fall from your eyes."
A little bit late, but as we have had both International Women's Day and Mothers' Day this past week we wanted to sing this song for you all. Written by Brian McNeill, the song details Brian's admiration for the life and courage of the famous Scottish historical figure Flora McDonald, who saved Bonnie Prince Charlie after the civil war of 1745. She was imprisoned for helping him, but then moved to America to live the rest of her life. She later returned to the Isle of Skye, where she passed away. A very strong woman, indeed.
Here's to all women & all they have achieved, all they do and all they will continue to share with the world.
I learned this wonderful song from the singing of Dick Gaughan.
Enjoy!
Featuring Hannah Rarity on Vocals and Luc McNally on Guitar & Backing Vocals.

This is just utterly beautiful, Hannah, your voice is sublime and Luc's accompaniniment, guitar and vois, just so right!xx
What a great song...lovely voice and subtle guitar playing. As a Scotsman living in Charleston South Carolina makes it more poignant.
Beautiful. Well done. Keep that fire burning! Keep sharing, you have a lot to share. Don't let the pressure get to you.
Another lovely, lovely offering. Beautiful guitar playing, a sweet complement. Rarity, indeed. One struggles to keep their own tears from falling hearing you . . . your song lifts us up to that beautiful horizon where other times, places and lives come back to life within us. Your song is a gift, Hannah. Thank you!!!!!
Sublime and moving. Beautiful music, Hannah and Luc - I am looking forward very much to seeing you in East Kilbride Arts Centre next week (22 March 2018). I hope Luc's arm has healed fully to allow him to play. I have three strong women in my life - wife (of 45 years), daughter-in-law (studying at university), and grand-daughter (Primary 1 and extremely funny) who all fill me with great pride.
Totally Stunning x
Beautiful song, beautiful voice, beautiful guitar playing!
I first heard this song from Dick Gaughan, master Scottish player but this version from Hannah is beautiful too
Could you please do 'Wander through this land' together with him, like you did at the trad award winner tour in Germany? I was there and it was so beautiful!!
Hi Fransiska, thanks for your message. Unfortunately we won't be able to do this as the tour has now ended, and earlier than planned! However, if you'd like to listen to the track you can purchase the individual track of 'Wander Through This Land' or complete album at hannahrarity.bandcamp.com x
Thank you so much, I really love that song!
There’s a moment of your story that has always haunted me,
when you set out in yon open boat to help the poor man flee.
Was Charlie Stuart’s future already plain to see?
Did you know he’d be a waster all his days?
If you did I’d give the world to find a single tear you cried
Fae the Cuillins tae the Carolinas
you showed us one and all
the courage that you call
from the tears that would not fall from your eyes
And after thirty years, after all that you’d been through
was the thought of Bonnie Charlie just a memory to rue?
As you watched your husband putting on his coat of scarlet hue
to go and fight for German Geordie’s crown.
But you never tried to hide behind the dreams of days gone by
Fae the Cuillins tae the Carolinas
you showed us one and all
the courage that you call
from the tears that would not fall from your eyes
And there’s times I think I see you when I find the kind of face
Where a woman’s independence has kept a woman’s grace
Where confidence and pride refuse to know their place
Or hide behind the easy tricks of beauty
For to me your life’s a light that shines across the stormy skies
Fae the Cuillins tae the Carolinas
you showed us one and all
the courage that you call
from the tears that would not fall from your eyes
Aye, fae the Cuillins tae the Carolinas
strong women rule us all
with the courage that they call
When the tears refuse to fall from their eyes

So unfair on other Celtic female singers few can match this.
