    Seeing is understanding. The thumper being glass makes it easier to see how it works. Thanks for a really helpful video. It is like a separate still heated by the vapors of the from the main still. It would be interesting to add temperature indicators to the vapor space of the thumpers.
    In the lab I worked in we were required to tape any glassware that was heated or put under any sort of pressure or vacuum. I have imploded some Some vacuum receivers (small round bottom bronsalated glass flasks) even though they were lab grade because they had small hard to see scratches or imperfections and / or I accidentally bumped them too hard somehow. The tape tended to hold the glass together and reduced risk.
    Well just a thought. I have used a lot of different glass still setups but oddly never used a thump keg type set up. So thanks again for the great visual of a thumper in action.

    Good stuff!👌 I've seen lots on thumpers. And understand their basic principles, but this is the first time I see an explanation with its operation with all "in my opinion", points covered. 🍻

    I never had luck running two thumpers, one seems to be perfect and I start low, like 1/4. But good info, you answered two questions so, thanks for the video, good stuff.

    I had no idea the activity in the thumper was so violent. I just assumed it was a slow simmer. Completely changed my perspective, thank you.

    WOW! that vid joined all the dots together, every 'Q' I had you covered in detail and then some. Thank you very much mate. My mission is to turn my T500 mangroves Jack set up into a pot still from the top of the copper dome then across the lynn arm and into 2 of those thumpers that you just explained, BUT... I'm addicted to P I D's so I'll be putting one of those inline somewhere. Thanks again for the info mate, be safe....we need you, 'Barley and Hops' is starting to get a bit old ... still has some worthwhile advice but yours is more in tune with us 'Down home, heart felt' people. Cheers mate.

      I have a PID i made to run my big still i love it for the reflux column i have some video of her running if you look back further in my vids. I also have a onion head and gin basket for Anna Nicole the big still i ran it with a PID at first but I ended up uesing a PWM controller when I operate her in pot still mode. You have a great still looking foward to hearing how your experiments work out. My email is spikelove654@gmail.com i would enjoy seeing pics if you want to send some.

    There's a simple way to eliminate pressure and methanol inclusion,one straight piece across,a T over each jar,a ball valve between jars,first T long side,out and over to long side second jar and exit up to T,then out to condenser,with liquid in jars pressure takes path of least resistance,by opening valves,in my case,it turns into a pot still open system,good stuff!

    Thanks for the great video. I have a single half gallon glass thumper, and today was the first time I ever put anything in it. I put 4 cups of apple juice in it, and by the time I was finished with the run it was almost full! I’ve ran it before without putting any liquid in the jar, and it ran fine. I was considering trying a run without the thumper and see how it turns out! It’s got to be quicker! Have you ever run without a thumper, and if so what was the difference? Thanks

      i've started few years ago here in france, learned by watching moonshiners and informing me, i now do an apple moonshine who taste like you just crunch in a apple, i put some concentrate apple juice and little pieces of apple in the thumpkeg (the second time) because i run it normally with thumper, then redistill everything with the "juice" method, taste so good

    What happens if your jar fills completely up?

  • @VanillaAttila
    @VanillaAttila 2 роки тому

    Do you add a gin basket that hangs above the fluid into your thumper jars? That way only the vapor strips the flavors from the botanicals, opposed to having the botanicals soaking in the liquid. I would imagine the flavor profile is different?

    • @ph.d.browne235
      @ph.d.browne235 2 роки тому +1

      There are baskets for that and it is better at the head inside of the still. I've used a stainless pasta strainer before. You just have to keep it in the vapor but not blocking the flow. Cheers!

    A T fitting with a ball valve in the in coming (pressure side) would solve the vacuum problem. When you kill the heat open the valve. Just be sure it's closed when you start!

    Do u still have to discard ur head? Poisons? Methanol? Jw or does the thumper kegs filter out those toxins?

    • @kirtley4660
      @kirtley4660 3 роки тому

      Always throw off heads. When the vapor goes through the thumper it double distills and every time you distill alcohol it gets more pure. It won't remove the methanol it will redistill and come through first like on a normal potstil because the methanol has a the lowest boiling point. The redistillation that happens in the thumpers removes non toxic impurities that make the liquor nasty

    • @spikelove9533

      Its possible you can hold a mirror up to the connections and it will fof the mirror. Is your thumper 1/3 to 1/4 volume to your pot

    • @ph.d.browne235
      @ph.d.browne235 2 роки тому

      I was wondering this. A dump valve on the lid of the thumper would act as a port for adding juice and a pressure equalizer? With electric heat the boil stops almost instantly.

    If you mount a Thumper to a Still, you turn an open System into a closed System. There is no worse treatment you can do to a container than a Vacuum! So it's pretty smart to use Glas as material for it! :D

    • @kirkstinson7316
      @kirkstinson7316 3 роки тому

      So when you end your run take the first jar off. Like right when it stops bubbling. As long as the tube is exposed there's no vacuum

    Just normal mason jars are NOT safe to use as a thumper. In fact, all glass with borosilicate being the exception is dangerous to use as a thumper!
    Sooner or later these things will crack or accidentally be bumped and shatter. What then? You'll have a shitload of hot alcohol all over the place...one spark and BOOM!
