Shure 520DX Green Bullet Microphone - How Does It Sound With Vocals?

- The Shure 520DX is one of the world's most popular Harmonica microphones, but there's also a growing trend for artists using it as a vocal mic...so in this video, we're finding out how the Green Bullet sounds with vocals! Check out the 520DX here: www.pmtonline.co.uk/shure-520...
First released in 1949, the Shure 520 or Green Bullet mic was original designed for use with 2 way radios, but it’s distinctive sound and unique design which fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, meant that it quickly became the go to microphone for Harmonica players. In recent years though, artists such as Jack White and Wolf Alice amougst others have started using them for vocals.
At first glance, the green bullet isn’t really an ideal vocal mic. There’s nothing wrong with the build quality, like any shure mic, it’s tough as old boots. It features a built in volume control which admittedly, is handy for harmonica players to adjust levels on the fly, but kinda pointless for vocalists, and as you’ve probably noticed, there’s no attachment for a mic clip or stand, and you can’t disconnect the cable, which only has a hi impedance 1/4” jack connector.
There are ways around these problems of course, you can always use a DI box to convert the signal to lo impedance XLR for connecting to a mixing desk, and the mic is conveniently the perfect size to fit into a standard studio microphone cradle, so you can easily attach it to a stand, which adds to the cool, retro, 1940s aestetic of the mic.So how does it actually sound on vocals?
Truthfully, it’s never going to replace your main vocal mic if you’re looking for a clear, accurate reproduction of your voice. Instead, it works really well as a secondary, kind of effect vocal mic, offering a great sounding lo-fi, transistor radio type vocal tone, which is full of character and starts to distort very organically the louder you sing into it. It’s a great little mic to have in your arsenal to add a really unique vibe to your vocals, either live or in the studio. One advantage of having that 1/4” jack connection, is that you can easily plug the mic directly into any effects pedals if you did want to even more experimental.

I love it for vocals! Punk as hell
It gives the vocals this wonderful live quality
Based on the samples you performed, I gather that this is the mic every indie folk rock band has used for the last 15 years.
Love the lofi sound! Great review and singing!
I was looking for a mic like this for a cosplay I'm doing. Plus i just love the older sounding mics. Something nostalgiac/calming about it.
What character are you doing? :O
I use it as my only vocal mic. I have backups, but this is my main one. I love it.
Is it all ending?
The Buggles cover made me laugh out loud. Ah, memories ...
Great playing SINGING, commentary.. keep up the good work,.ROCK ON
Ordering (for harp/limited vocals). Great video - and that girl's voice is insane. Damn.
Awesome video killed the radio star cover
The sound reminds me of broadcasts you find in faux-retro games like Bioshock. Super neat effect.
Great video! What's the shockmount model?
this mic is actually great for combo guitar amps in studios
Sounds really cool.
Worth every penny
Hi. When you do the guitar playing section in the video the guitar is very present in the green bullet section but drops off almost completely when you're singnig through the sm58. Is the green bullet picking up a wider field than the sm58?????
Great video but could you let me know if you're running the 520DX through a DI Box or Microphone Preamp? Thank you in advance.
Try it in a kick drum. Sounds like a snare.
Liked for the Tender cover! Cool mic and I liked the mid-rangy sound on the female vocalist.
H.P. Baxxter uses this for vocals for years.
I was looking for this comment
@@VeganCossack me too
I'm looking for a cheap shockmount to mount this onto a stand, are there any you'd recommend as I have very little experience with shockmounts and I'm wary of buying one that won't fit.
Thank you.
Look up the ammo clip 520
Has anyone tried this with multiefffects pedals (like Helix or Zoom MS-70) or a sustain pedal like the Superego straight into an amp?
you said that i can plug the green bullet to a guitar pedal, but can i connect it to a digital guitar pedalboard? like the mooer?
Cam Cole also uses this mike I believe but with distortion added.
Three Days Grace is one of my main influences, Adam Gontier used this as a second mic live and Matt Walst today uses a Shure 55SH. I'm not sure which one would be better for me, a couple of my bands songs have the more "radio vocals" for the verses and I think it would be awesome to replicate the effect live.
Is this mic good on live shows ? Being high imprudence and all . Does it sound like the demos you made live ? Thanks
NEED HELP!!!
I just bought this mic and it arrived today. I have tried to conect it to my interface and since it is high impedance I got 0 connection. I am wondering what exact thing I need to buy for it to work?
It states on shures site I need a Shure A95u but it isn't the right connectors. Please help me.
Guess from a curiosity angle may generate the hit counter ,but in reality what your doing here is comparing a spade with a pick. If the pick is not available then spade may have to cover both, get the idea. Still I guess it gains interest so that's a good thing.
Stupid question, but what do you plug it into for it to project sound. I’m just beginning with mics
Love it and hate to ask, can we get a demo without reverb?
Postprocessing is huge. Please post the pure sound without any sound processing.
Gritty Hank III type vocals are great with it.
It’s perfect for Cowpunk and Rockabilly!
What are the Eq Specifications on this mic?
Very nice
Можно ли микрофон с несимметричным выходом подключать к звуковой карте ? Как я понял у звуковух сейчас симметричные входы , звуковая или микро не сгорит ? В интернете много чего прочитал . Переходник есть ?
The video killed the radio star segment was fantastic haha
какой держатель для него нужен ?
I LIKE!
witch holder is this guys?
Love the sound of the green bullet on vocals in this video. Has so much character. Sm58 sounds sterile and boring compared to the green bullet. Great video ❤
I gound my " Green Bullet " mic ( model 440 SL ) a few years ago at a flea market ( $ 7.00 !!! ) with a really cool desktop base with an on - off switched handle . Watch old M*A*S*H reruns when it shows " Radar " in the orderly room , for confirmation . For myself , and I suspect , for many others , the real attraction is the diminished frequency response inherent to vintage audio tools , and the recordings they produce .
Really wanna see someone do extreme vocals through it
Jeromes dream and lightning bolt basically lol

I’m gonna be quirky with one of these someday. Thanks for the solid review and test 💙
Is the grill plastic? Or metal
It sounds classic. Its still for harmonica.
I love this mic, it was used on thee hounds on foggy Notion
No wonder I love that album. So good
Three days grace uses this mic in alot of their songs!
thats what i thought they used but i never really knew. I might have to get one these things sound sick
With the 1/4" jack the 520DX is predestined to be connected to a Marshall amp to give the voice an additional amount of ... let's say "timbre" ... 😁
We thought the same thing (:
What mic holder is that?
Shock mount from Aston.
Great mic, great Female singer
Use mine with my Harmonica and love it
Is this the one that Jack White normally uses during live performances?
Yes
@@BrianDBoyd-do7iu Thanks for answering my question, mate :)
He has one hotwired into his Gretsch which runs into his guitar amp for added distortion
wow..i reckon its got more capture
Adam gontier uses one aswell
Morphine! Check out Sharks from their album "Yes"
i have a model 520 for sale right now on eBay.
Hahaha top notch!! What a dude!
sounds really vintage, 60s flavour surely
Really nice video with a couple jokes xD
Iggy Pop and the Stooges did this on the Fun House LP. Obviously, it worked verrrrry well for them!
better than sm-58 low fi sound
Fuck yeah, time to cover some Primus songs
King Crimson too
Don't sit under the apple tree - interesting choice of song!
i liked it more tham the other mic lmao
Starset uses it
No love for three days grace?
Curious to know which songs exactly? 🤔🤔🤔

The ones made today are bad compared to the old original ones. Don't know what Shure did to them, but someone screwed up. If you ever get a chance to actually compare the old and the new, you'll see there's a tremendous difference. The old ones are bad for vocals, but great for harps. The new one ones are just the opposite.
BigDogDaddyD I can’t say how inaccurate this is.
I give this video my thumbs up cuz she's beautiful
fuck this would be perfect for me. Im using a “kings microphone” plugin and it sounds like dirty ass
But it is supposed to be for distorted amped blues harmonica and for that purpose it is only mediocre, a mere shadow of the older ones.
Mark Sandman.

Did Foster the People use this on Pumped up Kicks?
Meg❤
Using the green bullet for vocals is not a new concept. Blues guys have been doing it for years.
Like because Video killed the radio star.
Metallica - Poor Twisted Me
Scooter
scooter use it...
You didn’t play a harmonica through it because as you said you “can’t play one” but you still sang into one even although the same rule should be applied! 😂😂😂😂
Harmonica microphone? some people can play whit this"potatoes", but you do not even promote how ergonomically "fits well" in your hand, instead, give importance to bad vocals...
Not a comparison... I like mine and was interested but won't come back to waste my time!
Sounds awful. But the hot girl sounds like a star that's about to burn into the outer atmosphere. (you don't sound too bad though, just have to use your lower abdomen to support your upper body).
