Cutting firewood for next winter

- Every year I cut around 20 cubic metres of firewood, it is hard work so anything I can do to make the job more efficient is a good thing.
I made some firewood storage bins from free recycled pallets, this improves air flow and the wood dries much faster than sitting in a stack on ground.
A hinged panel on front allows me to pick up the bin with the digger forks and tip the load straight on the truck. - Навчання та стиль
Great idea converting the old “digger” bucket to move the pallets
Loved the truckie’s hitch mate. 👍👍
And the award for best homemade log lift goes to Marty T.
I like the log lifter will be making one of those for my splitter
I like it
Watching some old ones again, still top notch! 👍🍻
That log lifter on your splitter is a magic idea! 👍
Makes the job so much easier
Tusen takk til Marty god underholdning. 👍🤗👍🇸🇯
I thought that was some kind of camera trickery when that log came flying back at you, I realized then it hit the strap causing it to bounce back. Nice special effects!LOL 😃👍👍
Glitch in the Matrix ;)
🙃
Your cordless power tool hack had me in stitches Marty. Great log lift too. Loving your work
sweet boomarang at 5:54
I had to watch that a couple of times before I realised what made it bounce!
I initially thought that he reversed the video :)
And the T-man goes for the shot.... DENIED! Man he thought he had the easy layup but the cratester said "nope get that junk outa my house!"
"What do you do for a living?".
I live.
I’m more intrigued by his 12v car battery running his combo dewalt drill haha ... excellent 👊🏼👏👏👏
You did what I was going to do ! You used the back stroke of the ram to lift the block of wood.
Good job I knew it would work.
i was thinking mounting the splitter where the bucket would go.. upside down.. so you could just hold it over the cut sections and split them using the digger hydraulics .. pushing them around with it too.. maybe the splitter beam and cylinder will bolt to the digging pick somehow..
then imagine mounting a hydraulic chain saw on the digger.. being able to reach up and easily trim off low branches.
brilliant mod to the splitter section loader..
I like your thinking
That would be some damn expensive firewood 😂😂
But a fun way to do otherwise boring hard work👍
Probably would have to work out the fuel and time efficiency of that to see if it was better than how it's done now. Putting hours and wear on the digger might not work out cheaper in the long run but it's worth figuring out I guess -of- if it saves manual effort and lowers injury risk.
Great Video Marty, wonderful innovation in what is a run of the mill task, thanks for sharing
The David Brown sure changed the way you get firewood.
You just solved my firewood storage problem! Thank you sir!
thanks for the video excellent as usual.i like hard work now im retired i can sit and watch it all day!!!
Great repurposing of a worn out frost bucket. I don't know why I never thought of that as I had all the tools and stuff to work with then. I don't know what you call that bucket but I had one in new condition when I got my near new excavator. I wore that excavator out and that bucket was in near as good a shape if not better than when I found it in a scrap pile. I traded some scrap at the site and just loaded it back in when I found it, no harm-no foul and then when I sold the excavator, That guy didn't want it so cleaning the yard up took it back where I found it. About five dollars in junk metal as it was half the load. Don't get much for metal that is even clean metal here in Alaska but buying it is different. Good video as I got some ideas from it
The log splitter could do with a trailer hitch of it's own so you can drag both around at the same time.
You come up with some really nice solutions to make work easier.
I love the Dewalt running on a 12v car battery.
Marty, I really enjoy your videos. Too things I've taken away from watching you is: 1: Think things through. 2: Be deliberate in execution. You're not in a hurry and because of that, you make good progress with few missteps. Cheers!
Hey mate just wanna say how much I loved watching your videos. Can't wait for the next one Marty. Blessings from Taupo
This is how firewood keeps you warm all year.
Digger forks excellent idea, well made.
That sweet running ole gal Digger just needed to wait in the woods for a young buck like you to come rescue her and get her running again ... That motor sounds so healthy ... Loved watching the process great job "work smart not hard" beautiful land thanks for taking us along ... Ed in Phoenix writes
That wood split far easier than any Aussie red gum I've split. :) Love the fork lift and the method of lifting onto the log splitter.
Nice use of the car battery to power your drill. Kiwi ingenuity!
I was wondering what he had it wired to.
No doubt using a bit of no.8 wire
THAT LIFTING CRADLE IS SUPER CLEVER, SAVES THE OLD BACK BIG TIME, GREAT VID/JOB. MICK FROM UK
Thanks mate, yeah ive got a bad back, couldn't do it without the lifter
They were good freebies.
5:55 that was one of the funniest, random and unexpected things I ever witnessed. :D
How do you think I felt seeing it bounce back at me lol.. Glitch in the Matrix?
Marty T 😂
Thanks! Now only have to stack wood once. Split and load into basket ; move basket to carport ; set on dolly ; roll onto covered porch.
Cool idea. Nice, plus you can easily move around the firewood.
Something very satisfying about splitting firewood.
Nice set up Marty T.
Awesome!
You have so many cool tools. I know it's still a grind to do but that digger has made things so much better for you in many ways.
Hey I like that log lifter sweet looks like it works well 🙂🙂🙂
I never knew watching logs being split could be so interesting 😂
Very nice work. Personally, I would not have thought of disassembling pallets. The ones I have experience with are hickory I believe, and I can't imagine trying to pull nails. I used to split my firewood, but these days I buy most of it pre-split. Just getting too old, lazy, or both.
MARTY TURNS DIGGER INTO SWISS ARMY KNIFE,/MULTI TOOL, GENIUS,
You have a very ingenious system with your firewood. Great job and I very much enjoy watching your video's.
Kia Ora Bloke.
I do like your videos a lot.
Thanks so much.

Ah yes.
The pallet-breaker had not been made, at that point.
Kinda weird to have watched the pallet-breaker video yesterday and seeing pallets being broken today without that tool...^^
The log lifter and digger forks - around here we call that Amish engineering.👍
You can't beat the convenience of a good log splitter, I just went from a 5 tonne to a 40 tonne unit and it's saves having to swing a maul for a couple of hours.
Log lift is a winner!
Its a real back saver
Good job
Hi Marty. Those logs look like great quality.....so for a man with his own sawmill surely you can get more $’s from good milled lumber than you can from firewood? Love your industrious nature and channel. Greg.
It's a hard job to look it like it's easy. Well done, lucky you! Regards from Switzerland
A Marty T video popped up on my feed, and I got excited for a new video... but its an older one I've seen before. Oh well, time for a rewatch I guess. Another cheap way to make a bin for firewood are the metal cages from IBC totes. They're all over the place here stateside, not sure about over there.
One man automation. Very nice working smart
Love the digger forklift - never seen that before
Nice Work Marty. I enjoyed watching the video. I also subscribed.
Amazing.... You have cameras everywhere! 😌
What we use to say in the south " this ol boys got gumption " !! 😁
Way to go bud !
Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
Some of us still say it. The natives, that is.
very nice job, i really like the diesel log splitter.
Hope Angry ram doesn’t take a dislike to your bins
Wasn't sure I had the right channel. The ATV, splitter and chainsaw, all appeared too new for your use. Thanks, Narragansett Bay
Marty as always i learned something and you gave me a great idea....Thanks pal and take care
You live the perfect life.
Ingenious if not Genius.....Living in Nature like this, must be surely Fulfilling Mentally and also Physically
Pallet wood makes great kindling wood too! Just split the boards up with a dull axe into skinnier pieces.
Maybe some log hooks for the digger could help you get the logs on a trailer so you can cut split ant pack them more efficiently all in one place.
Awesome to watch you and your mate making do with what you have or so very comical to watch dont stop recording
For safeties sake I would put a flip cover on the on/off switch to prevent a dog, child, someones boot from bumping it while you are not noticing them and you are working on the band saw, (keeps out water too) and never reach across the cutting edge to push what you are cutting, rig a push stick, something that won't break (like 2x2 or 2x4). All you need to do is trip, snag a side branch and Zing, no more forearm.
Excellent setup,I love it,well done fella!
Nice job , very clever
nice work!
I enjoy these chore videos.
Massive rings on those trees!
NZ temperate climate=growth all year round. 3 x 30 year tree crops in a century.
..very efficient, good vid..
Hey Marty, your log hooks should have been detachable to also mount on the Hitachi so you can lift logs and put them on your sawmill! Just another idea!
Love the drill
That log trick! ;) 5:54
A little glitch in the Matrix ;)
you da man, man
pretty smart good job
I have just finished (almost) repowering my ihi excavator with the same engine thats on your wood chipper from Able. Good little diesel engine for the $$$, couldnt even buy an injector pump for the old honda that was on it.
I saw the framing of a tiny house for a minute when you were putting those pallets together
Haha it wouldn't last long with untreated timber
Nice drill bro
Neighbor of mine has one of those vertical wood spliters. Saves on having to hoist up any large pieces.
Yeah mine does pivot to vertical but its harder on the back bending over
@@MartyT You may consider doing the rolling of rounds and even cutting on your knees.
Sit on a bucket or round for splitting and once you have a pile to throw back to the knees
for great leverage and low back strain. Your log lift is cool tho bro!
Gotta love the power of hydraulics in this video :)
When Marty is at home always look for the crazy head butting sheep, you'll find them in the back ground at times, quite funny when they carry on.
You've probably done this already but; have you thought of a small log plate on your side to save your right leg? It's save your right hand slowing the split section too
You need to build a pallet wrecker. A large pry bar.
I didn't even know they existed, just googled it, brilliant. Thanks man
Nice camera angles
Nice
Black Sheep Security on guard duty at the gate
Its the angry ram lol
Good size of wood u got there
I noticed all equipment shown here start up right away
5:55 I busted out on this one. lol
At 5m 55s - What's with the bit of wood being chucked into the crate and then flying back at the same trajectory? Conservation of energy would point to some trickery here ....
Glitch in the matrix lol.. Na it hit the rope holding the bin on
I just wonder if you have calculated how much gasoline and diesel you used to transport and prepare the crate boxes as well as fell, limb, cut, split and transport the timber? Did you produce more or less of the amount of CO2/use of energy from preparing and burning the firewood than heating your house with a kerosene burner? It's all a calculation we seldom but often should do.
The 20,000 trees Marty planted around his 100 acre block absorb all the "waste" he might be producing...and the effort re the machinery is worth it'...free electricity from hydro, free firewood from his trees....as well as carbon sink.
@@JohnSmith-pl2bk Well as young I'm sure I planted some 20.000 trees myself, but I don't regard that as a particular contribution to the CO2 equation. I was merrily asking if he, or somebody else, had calculated what would be the optimum amount of dinosaur juice needed for sustainably keeping his household warm and fed. Nothing else ....
PS the best "carbon sink operation" he could do would be to cut down and burry the 20.000 trees he planted under 10 feet of dirt. Then plant another 20.000 trees and then instruct his kids/grandkids/grandgarndkids/gr... to do the same for the next 1000 yrs. I'm sure there are numbers in NZ which species sequester most C per area/time/habitat conditions. Perhaps
lemonwood (Pittosporum eugenioides) is a good candidate?
Fuck youre impressive mate. And I dont usually say that to sheep lovers. Love, an Australian
Marty, mount your log splitter up to the aux on your digger m8. Too easy...
Sit the splitter in the wide bucket you reckon.. Good idea
@@MartyT or get an I beam, put a quick hitch on wit ram, anvil, spliter on ram with a swivel head. Work it upside down with a small ripper for grabbing or mount a thumb on the bottom for placing logs, if really clever you could put a havester bar & chain on as a ll in one. Pen & paper. Sorry the seed is sown...🏞
Nice :)
Cool
Where is the Mad Max mower with the saw mill on it???
ATF oil in the diesel is good four the systems the old girl will Lovett oh yeah 1L per 40L but hammer down rock on
my neighbor uses his excavator to lift logs up to waist height for bucking them to size He has a thumb on the bucket
Good idea, that would be easier on the back
Honda 👍🏻
Chinese diesel but it does the job and runs on the smell of an oily rag
Marty T really wow? I have the same model of bike in the video could you make a video discussing it? Or showing it running on oily rag!
@@keeganfoster1792 i thought you meant the splitter, yes the quad is a honda trx350, good little bike. I recently recond the engine so its nice and tight
Marty T oh no lol Honda atv 1#
