The TED talks, not TEDX, often have transcripts. I wish this talk provided a transcript. I lived in China a couple of years and since have read about its past and news current times. I find much of this rings true. As he says, " think because our interaction will shape our global future". I respect China and hope westerners do not operate out of fear or jealousy. We need to work together for the good of ALL.

You think China actually cares about the African people? All they want is their resources. They will come in with massive infrastructure projects that African countries can’t pay back and they will seize the land. “Rise of China”? China was the world’s greatest civilisation during the Tang Dynasty. China was also the world’s greatest navy during the Ming dynasty. China took no colonies, attack no foreign countries. China, at that time, could have conquered the world yet they did no such thing ... unlike the rise of western imperialism. The anglo Saxon mentality must change!

Not what he's saying, his is really about not looking at China's rise as a threat, but a different perspective to the western views held as truth! This is perhaps the starting point of west understanding east and find ways to accept each other. The Chinese today is not the Chinese from a century ago, just like the Japanese, the world are modernizing, and by becoming modern is to become western, but each nation when successful will impart it's values and still retain their nationality. It's the west that needs to be humble and start to learn from others that are becoming more successful in some areas. The Japanese did it, now the Chinese done it, it's the west's turn now and if it will help to improve some of the inherent problems if you care to admit!

Germany -The country of moral honesty(德国).etc. Why the Chinese use good words to name these countries who've ever created conflicts or wars in China??

The arrest of Meng is based on unilateral Iran sanction by the USA. China was not a participant of the Iran sanction. So this is hence an unlawful arrest, USA law is not the law of the world nobody has to play by the rule set by USA unless it is by the United nations.

"There is only one system that works." "There is one true universal value." Here's a challenge: Whenever you learn about one "bad" thing about China from the media, go and LOOK FOR ONE GREAT THING about China. Do this for a year or two. You will feel great. Take your time. It simply defies all logical thinking to say Western View is a wider view when China has 1.4 billion people versus a much smaller population size of all western countries combined. In fact, western view represents a minority view imposed by force on a majority of people.

When you travel, you will find that Asian countries will be much safer, less aggressive and more tolerant, to some extent

Why didn't they conquer, they could for sure, but ancient Chinese have some wisdom such as: 己所不欲勿施于人。 君子以厚德载物。方圆相济。 If you understand this two sentences, you will understand why China can be powerful and strong without any slavery, conquer and invasion like the west.

Making China’s success reasonable is still on the way. Chinese have learned a lot from the west. They did research, they transformed the experience from west, they summarized it, and they innovated with it. Because Chinese’s modesty and willing for learning, they finally are closer and closer to the success. Hopefully the west can lower their position and do the same thing. But the problem is that most people from the west think their system is the ultimate form of modernity. China is not a exporter of system or model but the west should really calm down and face their problems wisely, take some actions and do reforms, except blaming China and defending themselves.
That's an interesting point about innovation. Chinese invented gunpowder and instead of turning into weapons, they made firecrackers for joy and celebration. Chinese visited around Asian region with biggest ship in the world back then but they brought gifts. Well, Chinese have embraced diversity for thousand years and respect that people have different viewpoints. Welcome to a world of eastern wisdom!

I think it's a little oversimplified that the newness of nation somehow equate to only understanding so much. These people came from Europe and Europe has a fairly long history. And let's face it, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. And moving to a new place and rebranding themselves as American or Australian doesn't absolve them of the kind of things their parent lands did.
One thing I want to say is that there were dialogue between Roman Empire and Han Empire. The Chinese found Roman's golden coins in one of the Han dynasty tomb.
Exactly, Han dynasty gave the Roman empire the title of 大秦 (Daqin). Which is a high praise, consider Qin is the very first unified dynasty under imperialism in Chinese history. And Daqin translates to Great Qin.

You have as much personal freedom on China as you do in America. You got beat up ( or even got shot at, and killed) by the police in the US, you may or may not get beat up by the police in China ( but definitely won't get shot at!). Politics aside, China itself is much safer than the US ( with the so call privacy being took away in the *public* , cause there surveillance camera everywhere in the cities). But people in China can walk around in the cities at night at 2, 3, 4 AM and people it is completely OK with it.

But a big question will be what will become of other human righthood, other nations, minorites, the poor, vulnerable fragile environmental ecosystems, human freedom is there a safety net to address complex non financial concerns. The future generations wants to know?

I believe that most people outside China have quite a one-sided picture of the country’s social issues, mainly from the various main stream reports. Ask yourself before you criticize China whether you judge the country fairly base on all aspects of researches? Including but not limited to the government system, the CPC structure of leadership, the overall well-beings of its people, the education, the planning for the future generations, the public order and the public opinion, etc. And more primarily, whether you understand the way how Chinese people valuate their life themselves. Nobody would deny that there are still social problems in China ( and in countries all over the world, including the United States). Kerry Brown, as the Director of Lau China Institute, King's College, UK, and also a typical westerner, presented a right way, which is to deeply learn the China's history of thousands of years, to know the rise and fall of this country especially the "tragedy 100 years" since 1840s, to understand the roots of Chinese culture and its values, to go to the modern China to see what is really happening there, and also to use your own brain to think about the truth. All the questions related to China's rising and how it is behaving now in the context of East Asian Geopolitics could be answered by history, the thousands of years' history for which this civilization has lasted. Do not simply trust what you get from Western media, who is almost innocent for this type of history and only has a very narrow vision.

I am very proud to be part of China and it is remarkable how China stood up in just 70 yrs, beginning with a broken state after WWII. So drop your prejudice from the western perspective. Before you blame everything China does, think over it, do you know the country? is your media telling the true story or just zooming out any negative news they capture? That is a bit false. Britain lost 90 percent of their mass and a huge slice of their population when they lost their Empire, this isn't happening to the States. Plus the USA became a desirable place to move too when UK's empire fell. Its unlikely you would see the capital flight that left UK to the USA during that time. If anything, the tax break caused a huge capital flight TOWARDS the USA, mostly out of China. The USA will have the only 1st world consumption economy in the next 5-10 years, as the world ages very quickly and the USA stays young. India will have a good consumption economy but they are still too poor for countries to benefit from that market. Russia has about 10 years before they become irrelevant, they are aging just as fast and won't even be able to field a large enough army to protect its borders. This is why they are in Ukraine. They need to reestablish the Soviet Union or they will never been a global power again. Not with China pouring into Siberia.

Because of safety, good environment and some wise policies, it has been the best immigration destination. But as the old world develop its transporting system, trading will become a problem to USA.

We just don't have much interest beyond those two places. Also our immigration has saved us. We will be the only 1st world modern consumption economy in 10 short years. With all these countries having an aging crises, our immigration has kept our population relativity young. And most of vital US trade is regional.

For monotheism countries it is very hard to understand others, but for others it is extremly easy to understand the west. For monotheism the first thing is 'our god is the only true god', that is a basic logic of monotheism countries: so that people believe in different believes is not different but 'wrong', and monotheism often believes that they have the right to 'righting wrongs' and to teach others how to live their life. Spending so much time to think about 'why China doesn't believe in our believes' is a great waste of time and energy. To be fair, China has always support this post WWII world structure for over 40 years, it enjoys it and want stability of it. It support the euro zone, and support U.N. China doesn't want to change the world at all, the conflict comes from the west, it is the founders of this post war structure starts to destory the bases of it. Ironicly, China and Germany are the lastline of defence of this globle free trade system, one been a communist one was part of the reason why U.N. even started at all. Do you know what China wants though? Does anyone? Does China? The US weren’t very big on changing the minds of people until they became the biggest. Nor did Germany and other former world leaders. The US actually protected China from colonialism around the boxer rebellion. However, once the power is unrestricted, nothing really prevents them from taking the next step, the US has been involved in regime changes, etc. But if you openly criticise America, they don’t really care, if you criticise China they will demand a public apology cuz the hearts of the Chinese people have been hurt. If/when China is the dominant world power and could force an apology instead of just demanding, do you mean they wouldn’t take that step? And if they would, then I am skeptical.
Takhe opi I don’t think the US wants to dominate the world, but history has shown it does want to lead it. But I’m not even saying the US is good and that China is bad. Maybe China would be the better leader. But at least with the US you know what you get, US opposes countries with different ideologies, i.e. non-democracies, while more or less leaving democracies to themselves. It would be naive to assume China won’t oppose it’s ideological opponents, i.e. democracies.

One of the best speeches by a very learned person offering a very balance view. China and the Chinese people want to engage with the rest of the world. But China also cannot continue to exist under the shadow of the rest of the world. China is still China. It has it's own value, culture and system. Liberal democracy is alien to the Chinese people and majority do not believe it is a system that will work for China. It is made up of 33 provinces with people of diverse dialect glued under one language and one cultural belief. The ideology of a capitalist system with Chinese character and the one country system are ingenious system only a civilisation state can practice and achieve, unlike a nation state. People of the world, particularly from the west must try to understand China and not impose its western ideology on China. China will resist such hegemony. People of the west should make a point to visit China and learn for themselves about the modern day China and its development. Getting to know the people and the aspiration of the people will go a long way to help them understand the country and the culture.
What would you do if one country was over fishing and destroying the sea beds around the area and affecting the eco system. What do you do when your neighbor builds a damn and cuts off your water supply. Its more than culture and beliefs.

America has already forced the world to adapt its businesses and corporate and oil interests. We have military bases around the entire world to make sure they know who's the boss. The US offered to protect all global trade and allow people full access to its markets. That was unheard of before WW2. The West is not based on values but privilege. It is not yet at the level of civilisation as it thinks it knows; whereas wisdom is knowing that one does not know and open to new thinking and a variety of ideas. While China is based on philosophy and truth seeking, the West is based on monotheism and other singular certainties - for example, Western style democracy is seen with religious fervor despite obvious drawbacks. Hence the fear - it is lack of evolution in ideas. Civilisation is free of dogma; it strives for improvement, not chained and fearful and impositional. Western thinking is simplistic and hence confrontational.
The overblown issue really exist just in the mind's of the Western elites. Hence why this talk is so convoluted and more fear-mongering than alleviating.
The speaker talks as if Chinese culture and value are opposite from the “gold standard” of Western culture represented by American and European value. Very cynical thought, sadly a popular idea by many westerners.
This is a refreshing idea on how the West could re-examine its own view of a modern and strong China, who is so different from Western culture due to its long history of civilisation and experience of colonisation by western powers in last century.
Wonderful talk! Eastern philosophy has already changed the world. Think of Zen, mindfulness, meditation, Yoga etc. I am sure, the thousand-year-old Confucianism may contribute more to the world. Chinese people do not want war. Most Chinese are still learning to get used to the personal freedom. Sometimes Chinese people may sound aggressive while they are just lack of communication skill.
I found an interesting fact. Large amounts of specific criticism on China are popular on western media, including that about politics, economy, environment, human rights, people's behavior, etc. Some of them are facts, but still a large amount of them are total nonsense. However, when it comes to praise on China, they are always inane, and focus on economy only. It seems that the media don't want their audience to know exactly what China is like, but just feed you a moulded impression.
As an academic and possibly consultant expert on China, reference to China as being a rising naval power rises profound questions upon the nature of his particular perspective and understanding of Geopolitics.
The talk is way too abstract and generalized. Give some concrete examples how this China vs the West conflict is actually impacting peoples lives, or how it might in the 21st Century.
Ive been watching alot of these videos regarding china, and one thing i noticed is that, and im surprised, ppl are starting too through the west's bull. As much as these haters online spewing ignorance, I think eventually most of the ppl in the world will point of their bs excuses.
As a Chinese currently living in Toronto, my personal feelings is though I very much respect western culture and their pursuit for freedom, I feel a lot of people at least here in Toronto are not practical enough compared to Chinese. They seem to be afraid of taking responsibility yet very good at looking for excuses. This ends up in that a lot of work just went around in circle and progress is made very slowly. I'm not sure if I may take Toronto as kind of a representation of Western culture, but overall I feel nowadays Western society focus too much on talk and argument but less focused on making real progress. History always has similarity there were times when Chinese just like to talk but not being practical and also when Westerners are much more practical. It's never which culture is better or not, but more like a natural rule in human history that things always rise and fall and rise.
Three things everyone needs to know... 1. Keeps currency artificially low in order to retain business. Unfair to the rest of the world who operates on a level playing field. 2. Forces foreign businesses to match and pair with a Chinese entity in order to do business on the Mainland. Those foreign businesses must also share it's IP with the Chinese entity. 3. Setting up and using Africa for its resources and rare earth materials, not helping the continent out of the good will of its heart. Strictly, a thought out and timed takeover.

The problem with interpreting China and its ideology system based on five thousand years of history is that there is a clear distinction to be made between China (the country and civilization) and the current power in place, the communist party (PRC). So yes, there is the Chinese mentality, it's culture and it's deep-rooted values which will go on and change the world but there is also the communist party which has now become de facto a dictatorship. Does China want to invade the world and export its own ideology? No, of course not. Does China want to bring chaos to the world? No, of course not. However, will the Chinese communist party do anything they can to continue its total domination over the people in China? Yes, it will. Giving a talk on China's influence in the world without referring to the PRC is like talking about the US's influence over the world without mentioning Republican/Democratic politics.

A reasonable question would be, how is today's China different from China of the past? For a culture that had Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism to fall back on, but embraced Marxism, which is a western philosophy, is curious. I don't believe that China is building a large Navy just so it can be a spectre to the West. China is building up its military so it can do what countries have done since time immemorial, impose its will on others. If you believe this is false then time will tell. It is incredible to believe that the Chinese can embrace capitalism and communism and still be judged by the yardstick of it's past virtues. The world needs to treat China like it's a Nation that will exploit, lie, deceive, ethnically cleanse, disposses, mass murder it's own people, covet the natural resources of other nations, loan shark poor nations, misrepresent its economy, and go to war all in service to itself -- just like the West -- because it has done all those things over the last 150 years. The world would be foolish to ignore this.
The hidden question is really whether the west is willing to share it’s power with the rising china and accept the fact that their idea of western democracy may not be the universal system for all prosperous countries. As long as the answer is a NO, the geopolitical conflict is inevitable.
The question is not about Chinese history or culture, which is for most part peaceful and productive. The question is the ruling Chinese Communist Party, which is a dictator by committee, and is dangerous in my view. Because they don't act based on moral principles but it operates to suppress free speech and free thought. The TED talks, not TEDX, often have transcripts. I wish this talk provided a transcript. I lived in China a couple of years and since have read about its past and news current times. I find much of this rings true. As he says, " think because our interaction will shape our global future". I respect China and hope westerners do not operate out of fear or jealousy. That is a bit false. Britain lost 90 percent of their mass and a huge slice of their population when they lost their Empire, this isn't happening to the States. Plus the USA became a desirable place to move too when UK's empire fell. Its unlikely you would see the capital flight that left UK to the USA during that time. If anything, the tax break caused a huge capital flight TOWARDS the USA, mostly out of China.
The USA will have the only 1st world consumption economy in the next 5-10 years, as the world ages very quickly and the USA stays young. India will have a good consumption economy but they are still too poor for countries to benefit from that market.
Russia has about 10 years before they become irrelevant, they are aging just as fast and won't even be able to field a large enough army to protect its borders. This is why they are in Ukraine. They need to reestablish the Soviet Union or they will never been a global power again. Not with China pouring into Siberia.

The US actually protected China from colonialism around the boxer rebellion. However, once the power is unrestricted, nothing really prevents them from taking the next step, the US has been involved in regime changes, etc. But if you openly criticise America, they don’t really care, if you criticise China they will demand a public apology cuz the hearts of the Chinese people have been hurt. If/when China is the dominant world power and could force an apology instead of just demanding, do you mean they wouldn’t take that step?

One of the best speeches by a very learned person offering a very balance view. China and the Chinese people want to engage with the rest of the world. But China also cannot continue to exist under the shadow of the rest of the world. China is still China. It has it's own value, culture and system. Liberal democracy is alien to the Chinese people and majority do not believe it is a system that will work for China. It is made up of 33 provinces with people of diverse dialect glued under one language and one cultural belief. The ideology of a capitalist system with Chinese character and the one country system are ingenious system only a civilisation state can practice and achieve, unlike a nation state. People of the world, particularly from the west must try to understand China and not impose its western ideology on China. China will resist such hegemony. People of the west should make a point to visit China and learn for themselves about the modern day China and its development. Getting to know the people and the aspiration of the people will go a long way to help them understand the country and the culture.

The West is not based on values but privilege. It is not yet at the level of civilisation as it thinks it knows; whereas wisdom is knowing that one does not know and open to new thinking and a variety of ideas. While China is based on philosophy and truth seeking, the West is based on monotheism and other singular certainties - for example, Western style democracy is seen with religious fervor despite obvious drawbacks. Hence the fear - it is lack of evolution in ideas. Civilisation is free of dogma; it strives for improvement, not chained and fearful and impositional. Western thinking is simplistic and hence confrontational.
The overblown issue really exist just in the mind's of the Western elites. Hence why this talk is so convoluted and more fear-mongering than alleviating.

Chinese people do not want war. Most Chinese are still learning to get used to the personal freedom. Sometimes Chinese people may sound aggressive while they are just lack of communication skill.
I found an interesting fact. Large amounts of specific criticism on China are popular on western media, including that about politics, economy, environment, human rights, people's behavior, etc. Some of them are facts, but still a large amount of them are total nonsense. However, when it comes to praise on China, they are always inane, and focus on economy only. It seems that the media don't want their audience to know exactly what China is like, but just feed you a moulded impression.

As a Chinese currently living in Toronto, my personal feelings is though I very much respect western culture and their pursuit for freedom, I feel a lot of people at least here in Toronto are not practical enough compared to Chinese. They seem to be afraid of taking responsibility yet very good at looking for excuses. This ends up in that a lot of work just went around in circle and progress is made very slowly. I'm not sure if I may take Toronto as kind of a representation of Western culture, but overall I feel nowadays Western society focus too much on talk and argument but less focused on making real progress. History always has similarity there were times when Chinese just like to talk but not being practical and also when Westerners are much more practical. It's never which culture is better or not, but more like a natural rule in human history that things always rise and fall and rise.
Three things everyone needs to know...
1. Keeps currency artificially low in order to retain business. Unfair to the rest of the world who operates on a level playing field.
2. Forces foreign businesses to match and pair with a Chinese entity in order to do business on the Mainland. Those foreign businesses must also share it's IP with the Chinese entity.
3. Setting up and using Africa for its resources and rare earth materials, not helping the continent out of the good will of its heart. Strictly, a thought out and timed takeover.

The problem with interpreting China and its ideology system based on five thousand years of history is that there is a clear distinction to be made between China (the country and civilization) and the current power in place, the communist party (PRC).
So yes, there is the Chinese mentality, it's culture and it's deep-rooted values which will go on and change the world but there is also the communist party which has now become de facto a dictatorship.
Does China want to invade the world and export its own ideology? No, of course not.
Does China want to bring chaos to the world? No, of course not.

A reasonable question would be, how is today's China different from China of the past? For a culture that had Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism to fall back on, but embraced Marxism, which is a western philosophy, is curious. China's example is a template for the colonised parts of the world like Africa and the Americas of how to take the initiative and fashion and ecosystem designed for the local people to prosper and thrive. If you think Chinese you will succeed in China but if you think Pan African, you will suffer in Africa. This has to begin to change.

This guy kept talking about the "huge difference" between the two "polarized" worldview, etc. ignoring the fact that the two cultures actually share a tremendous level of commonality in the sense of humanity. This shows his relative narrowness of mindset. And he doesn't really understand the history of China, one of the most ancient and, many times, the most powerful civilization in the world.

All of us should remember that no human creation is perfect: no political systems, or ideologies. We practice what suits the situation best. Greek philosophy does not stop over time. Putting the lens across human evolvement, we can only learn and adapt. Maybe one day single governments will no longer work, and global governance is the way out to resolve world-scale problems, like environmental, tax, technology challenges. I like this term: shared future of humanity. No one can stand aside when the world is so connected today.
