340 are great lil power houses. They build power beyond their cubic inches. You'll be impressed. My old demon was a beast. Wind it high and let it fly.
It's great to see Dad still kicking it around and wrenching away! Man i hope I still can in another few decades!!!! Keep up the great work guys!!!!! My buddy built one of those ferds for his girlfriend, he put a 260 in it and it really screwed!!! The shop looks like what I'd want Xmas morning to look like under my Xmas tree!!! You're going to absolutely love the new 340!!! They're great little beasts! A buddy had one in his 70 Duster 1/4 mile car. It was so stout he had a thick ass chain holding it down on the drivers side because it had so much power he kept breaking factory engine mounts! You're gonna love it no doubt!
Yes! I've been dreaming about a W2 SB Mopar for 30 years. Good Job getting one together and gonna be a fun project! 💪👍
I have been gathering these parts for a while, and I figured now or never
I have a 340 with W2s . Bought as a project... considering let it go . In a 67 back halfed DART.. IN Houston..
@@donaldpowers5557 id potentially be interested in the engine
@@ScottsSpeedShop I've started it when I bought the project it has big hooker headers with . A hardly used carb. The W2s came of a (I was told ) a 88or 89 AHRA world Chap class car I've spent hours watching videos in search of that connection.. was told the engine had 50 runs.. no way would I race it with crashing it.. the 67 DART is back halfed. Dana 60 with 488 spool, ladder bars coilovers tires are junk. Weld wheels stock front suspension .
I have flashbacks, because I have done tons of those things like you do today. Only difference is the price we paid for stuff. 100 bucks for a 30-50k engine and 50-75 for the transmission with the same miles.
The good old days when you could pick up 60's and 70s cars for $50.00-$100.00 like nothing in the early 80s when I was a teenager. I wish I had a time machine and a few million dollars to bring with me into the past!!!! Hell,if we're going to dream, might as well dream BIG!!!
I have a W2 headed 408 in my duster. Been 10.13 @ 133 with it. Solid flat tappet cam, victor w2 intake, wiesco pro tru pistons, about 11:1 compression, shift at 6,300. I did a mild port job on the heads. Runs really good.
I love the 340! a friend of mine bought a new 68 340 swinger 4spd and man that car was fun. I know your build will run great! think yard darts big brother.
I appreciate that brother
There was no "swinger 340" in '68.
The 340 is sometimes overlooked but can be a made into a high winding little ass kicker and provide lots of smiles per gallon 👍🇺🇸
I sure hope it impresses me and can live up to the hype that built up around it
The 426 Hemi may be "Voodoo Baby", but the 340 is "Pure Demonic"!!! Love your videos. Ma Mopar.
Those Fairmont seats would make a cool blacklight poster. Far out man 😎🚬
haha
Looking forward to the 340 build, my dad use to have fun in them 340s back in his young days, he would race some 440s and woop there asses, sweet vid bro🤘
This cool motor 😎
Awesome! This is hard for a Chevy guy to say, but the 340 is probably the most badass small block to ever come out of Detroit! Listening to the old timers talk, the 340 use to eat up 396 Chevelles.
when he revvs up the Ford the belt squealing like nails on a chalk board . tight that gull dang thing up lol
Yeah, need to tighten that belt
That 340's gonna shock ya! Remember, those were designed for RACING back in the day. They turn on in the upper revs, so you're going to want to put a loose converter & some fairly stiff gears like 4.30s or 4.56s. Good solid DC "Bible" combo was to run the Racer Brown .590/312 in them. Herb Mccandless did several oiling system mods on those also. Run a tube or braided hose from in front of the last lifter pair on the passenger side to in back of the 1st lifter pair on the drivers side. Keeps the oil from backing up & starving the bottom end at high rpm, which is where those heads shine. BTW, Dulcich got over 600 hp out of self ported heads. Check out the article "Porting The Amazing W/2s". Rock on dude & hell yeah I'd LOVE to hear that lil' screamer on the dyno!
I appreciate that, but we ain't building an all out race engine, please keep that in mind, this Duster is a driver that will see some track time. If I do any port work to my W2s it will be to just clean the ports up, unported W2s are like finding an unmolested 426 Hemi for $1500, so I don't really want to be the guy who ruins these heads by hogging them out. In their current state, they will outflow any stock head. I am going to be working with a friend who is very knowledgable on small block Mopars, and we are gonna put a package together that will suit my 10-1 .030 over 340 with the unported W2s
You can still buy bare W2 heads brand new last I checked few months ago.
@@ScottsSpeedShop you gotta remember, this ol' fool just doesn't dip a toe in, I CANNON BALL! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Good luck bud! Can't wait to see her done!
Your going to love that 340. Lots of fun
I like the stock air cleaner look idea
I do too, I just ain't a huge fan of the air cleaner itself, but I got it now
Cool motor, it will be good to see how much power it makes on the dyno
Was happy to take the Holley 2bbl back to its roots. I didn't think I was still in the gravel honestly. I did feel bad. That was meant for the pavement only. I agree with the hiding of goods under the stock air cleaner! That's actually pretty slick about the coolant bypass situation on those intake manifolds... 273 budget build needs to live in a Gremmy
I think you should get one of my 273's to do a build with
@@ScottsSpeedShop I wish I had one of the 273’s for my 66 barracuda a few years back
Looks like you are having great fun, maybe a AMC motor in the mix of all your Mopars would be interesting
They are almost identical tho as a Mopar engine. Half of the parts from the small blocks are the same parts. Several years ago, my wife spun a couple rod bearings in her Jeep 360 and it was around the Christmas holiday and parts stores could not get them in for me until the end of the following week but one of my local machine shops had dodge 360 bearings on the shelf and if you cross the numbers, they are identical.
There’s a few things that won’t cross like intakes cause of distributor location but heads will cross, as well as cranks and rods, pistons, etc. so they are out the same engine
As they said in my video production classes, it's all about having compelling content. I know some trolls complain about cameras and resolution but I say, WGAF. Anyways... 340s can wind up so I bet that one will cook. Looking forward to it. :-)
That very true man, editing software and fancy cameras do not guarantee success
When I was younger I surveyed with this old man that had a four cylinder Fairmont station wagon that he worked out of. That thing was a freaking billy goat it would go anywhere loaded down with survey equipment. dirt roads, cow pastures, tree farms, you name it. It had 350,000 mi on it and he drove it everyday.
340 will be a fun little motor
It should be
Yeah, I think people think they need a bigger carb than they really do. My 489 bbc only pulled 530 cfm at 5000 rpm, granted it had a small cam and peanut port heads and only made 430 horse, but it goes to show its not really the size of the engine that determines what size carb you need. Looking forward to watching this build!
Very cool Jed, my 71 demon i had 340 4 speed had that same air cleaner 👍👍👍👍👍✅✅✅✅✅
With the right Cam and headers, the 340 with W2 heads and 10.5 compression, will head well into the 400 horsepower range. Cam selection and header selection being the most important choices there. Open up the exhaust and run it out through the back, a good ignition system, and some good fuel. However to a guy that's had a 600 horsepower tunnel ram big block... expect a little more modest feel :-) in the light Duster body, the 340 is Magic. Good luck to you Jed:-) will be nice to see this one come along!
Them W2’s probably still flow better than my Sb trick flows lol . Deff a cool ass build, I’ll be watching!
Great 340 build! Would be awesome to see on dyno too. I have thought about adding the water lines into an intake as well
It ain’t no wonder you spend so much time in your garage geez😊
I enjoy engines
Nice to see some more work on the duster, curious to see what you have planned for it next!
Took me a while, but finally found a nice set of blue anodized DC covers for my '72 Demons 340. Looking forward to more W-2 content! Been on the fence about using them or the TF-190s. I'd go W-2 if I could find a good deal on a quality ported set with flow data.
now you have dealt a blow to the chevy ford gods
lmao
Really cool. I wish Chrysler would have just made the W2s a production head, even if it was in the smog era mid ‘70s cars. Then they would be a common ‘stock’ head like Clevelands and LT1s. From everything I’ve heard about them, WAY better than the early 340 heads.
I agree, W2's unported will outflow a ported X head from what my research has pointed out, no other small block iron head compares
cant wait to see more of this motor
Very cool ! Looking forward to the W2 content ! Cheers !!
Glad to hear that man
Can’t wait to see this high winder go .
Should be a good screamer, and on the valve covers maybe take a look over at the Phoenix powder coatings. Think that would be great
LQQking forward to the build.
Jed, if you build it right, you will love that duster with a 340. After all I run one in my 73 Satellite and everybody thinks I'm running a 383 or 440. Hope you consider comp cams extreme energy series, little scary running flat tappet lifters after what I saw what happened to birdsong. I 'm running 3200 stall and 4:30 gears just to give you idea. After all the 340 is a junior hemi!
I've never run a comp cam in my life and sure as hell won't now. I'll stick with Hughes engines, atleast they have knowledgeable staff on the cams they are selling and they are 100% mopar
@@ScottsSpeedShop Good stuff, I have had this comp cam 15 years n is okay, not sure I would buy again, maybe too much Chinesem now.
I like any engine on the show!
I apprecicat that man
@@ScottsSpeedShop you are welcome! We enjoyed the building of the classic stuff.
The 340 is a good engines I think you will like it when it's done
It's about time brother!!! Awesome!!
ROB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@ScottsSpeedShop S'happenin'?! That's Me!
W2 heads very very nice choice. Standard SB Mopar heads are to asthmatic.
I couldn't agree more, stock small block heads aren't that good, they have awful pushrod geometry, and the exhaust ports are a dumpster fire
Alright , a 340 for the Duster , that's right !!!
A 340 for my 340 Duster!
Awesome video
Thanks man!
Man i wish i had a set of them. Good job.
I love how you smelt the tailpipe. I knew exactly what you were doing. You remind me so much and look like him friend i went to highschool with. Late 80s He drove a 70ish dart 340 he would adjust carb by that smell... I like the keg in your shop. Using for a gas tank?
Awesome to hear from someone who understand my tuning, it may not be scientific or exact, but you can get it fairly close. I was actually gonna put a hinged door on the keg and make it into storage, but I ended up buying a shelving instead lol
Gonna be a sweet build.
I certainly hope so
Great video as always
Thanks man
Happy Motoring and bye bye.
I was waiting for the shredded tunes. 🎸
Dad's are awesome as it gets!
I know
Fab some headers for it? You have the skills Jed.
Another great video 👍👍🇨🇱
Thanks man!
Holley Street and Strip Dominators are pretty good intakes.
As a Small block guy, I know W-2's just from the end. And they are awesome... steel crank n W-2's she'll make it to 7000rpm no problem.
after 9 days in he hospital with more to come I thank you for this video and the others they get this old heart thumping like it should lol blessings to you and yours was it in a cuda way back when the 273 made its gradane entrance? I remember what a sweet sound those pipes put out
I have wanted to try W2 heads. I would love to see a flow comparison between w2 and trick flow. I have a set of stock 340 connecting rods if you can’t find some.
I haven't found any yet, if you want to shoot me an email I would appreciate it, let me know what you want for them chargerjezebel70@yahoo.com
Looking at stock flow I'd say at least bowl porting and a good valve job would be worth the $$$. Go from 230 to 275cfm pretty easily. Most guys were getting 300ish on the web boards back in the day. Might look up a couple articles from Steve Dulcich that he did on them.
They flow 270 as cast!
@@approachingtarget.4503 Got a link?
@@approachingtarget.4503 Magnificent W2 article by Dulcich states 236@500 and 244@600 Intake. Exhaust sucked stock. 140@600
His final numbers were 300/191 @600
Hmmmm interestingly
ive had a few of those fords, two fairmonts and one zypher
Wow nice looking Engine
Keeping it real brother. Love your work🤘
How much you want for the valve covers ? The Crome one. I did see dents !
Them chrome covers don't have any damage that I saw, everything is factory original on them but I do not plan on selling them at this time
Which W2 head? I would put a 4+ inch stroker crank in it. Check out the Engine Masters episode where they compare a stock stroke 360 versus a 4 inch stroker crank.
59 degree LA head with 65cc combustion chambers, and it is the "race" head not an econo. This is the last version of the W2 head Mopar made. As far as using a stroker crank, that would actually not be good for this particular build, I don't care about making all of the horsepower in the world, hence why I refuse to hog these heads out. I am using my W2's because I have them, and I ain't spending money on stock crap. But as far as the stroker deal, the larger stroke and added cubic inches would turn this engine into a torque monster and that isn't what I want, I want an honest 340 with W2 heads, not a 408(360) or a 416(340). If this 340 fails to live up to the hype that everyone has built up around 340's I would pull my W2's off of it and sell the 340 short block and disprove it from being the magical unicorn that kills Hemi's or I will be impressed that it lived up to the hype and love it.
if you got some odd ball small block stuff I might need for my 360 build let me know . you could make a set of adapter flanges to go from w2 to 340 heads ?
I've got small block stuff stashed all over the garage, if you need something let me know. My W2 heads have both W2 and standard LA bolt pattern
I definitely want to see what you get out of it.
I do have a question about using the 273 con rods in a 340 block, wouldn't that be better for reducing the the stroke, for less cubes=more revs, just asking, cheers from australia 🇦🇺
Same stroke, smaller bores.
You could use 273 rods in it for sure, it would make for a lighter rotating assembly, but I would start to wonder if they could handle the stresses of the much heavier 340 piston
I have a set of early W2 heads without any outside casting identification marks on them. Factory cheater heads.. Not for sale. They came off a old Chrysler kit car. That car is long gone.
that will be no slouch in the duster😁
Hopefully man!
@@ScottsSpeedShop What are you gonna do with that 360 from the duster once you pull it out? You gonna do a teardown vid of it?. One of my w2 heads has a crack so im gonna have to send a guy to braze them. If they can't be repaired I know a guy who will sell me some 48 degree heads.
@@sinatralerby7545 I'll probably sell that 360 as a good running engine and if no one wants it, I'll hang onto it
I’ve seen that fairmont somewhere before.
Erik, thanks!
Yeah, same here, if I recall it was on some really awesome youtubers channel
@@ScottsSpeedShop aww shucks
I seen a video on UA-cam where they got 376 hp out of a 340 with head's and cam.
Sorry Bro. Goto stop you at 9.48. Regarding the heads. There is no welsh/ freeze plug at the front of the heads, in front of the exhaust, on these W2's. so i would pick it up. cheers.
What's the number on the 340 rods? I have a set with pistons on them I picked up at swap meet.
According to the internet. The part casting number is 2899496
@@ScottsSpeedShop well I'll check those rods I picked up with pistons.. at a swap meet.
Is cylinder stretch a thing? I have a 340 bare block that has been on an engine stand for probably 15 to 20 years. It came up in conversation couple years a go while talking to a mechanic and he said. Oh crap it might not be any good. If you let them hang that long you get cylinder stretch.
Personally I think they guy is a dork. I mean more then the cylinder would have to stretch.
That is complete hocus pocus, cast iron doesn't stretch, it breaks. So if there was any truth to that, you'd be getting cracks in the block before it'd stretch. Also the engine stand mount to the bellhousing area, which is where you transmission mounts, so under the same belief, an engine that has been in a car for any length of time would be susceptible to the "cylinder stretch" as well. The guys who tell those lies want you to believe your stuff is junk so they can buy it dirt cheap or are jealous and want to see you pitch it
@@ScottsSpeedShop 100% fact jed... you are right. I've been hearing fables like this for more than four decades concerning my Mopar engines and parts LOL. Always Beware of the dorks hahaha
I'd look for a stroker crank build a 426 small block.
Normally I'd be all over building a 416 stroker, but I really want to experience a 340
Yeah I watch whatever all the time.
As the 340 goes. They can be stroked to 440 ci. Another "delusional " cover up from the outside.
If you ever wanna sell that SB tunnel ram… i’d be happy to buy it!
It could be for sale, but it wouldn't be cheap
@@ScottsSpeedShop ok, fair enough! Let me know!
Your going to take the engine up to 6800 to 7000 that’s where it likes to be and your going to need a good converter with at least 4.10s ! 4.30s or 4.56s if you really want to get the most out of that engine….
The Duster already has 4:10s and we will see how those fair, if it needs more gear, we will change it in the future
Um yeah a w2 headed 340 is going surprise you.
A ton towards it, if you are going to run a solid, not slush flat tappit!
Love your video content..but damn dude your loud music ruins everything.
Unfortunately that is something I cannot fix, I just rewatched the video and the music volume is the same as the commentary volume. I have heard other folks say the same thing, but I can't do anything to fix it, since it plays just fine on my computer, on Dad's computer, and both of our TVs. So I am gonna have to blame different settings on different computers
@Scotts Speed Shop ..well that sucks. But I'm watching on my smartphone and even when I watch it on my smartTV it's to loud also. Why not just eliminate the music all together. I'd rather hear you guys talking
I tried something to get ahold of you and it messed up "our connection"
What are you talking about?
I tried to talk to you about the carburetor I had
Somehow that connection got disconnected
@@mohawk2138 oh, I never got an email from you
I will try AGAIN! Just like you getting Jezebel right
TTI Has header's that aren't that expensive.
raw mild steel, not even painted the headers are $775 that is without shipping or tax, pretty freaking ridiculous if you ask me, considering the headers don't fit as well as most claim
@@ScottsSpeedShop didn't know that.
