- Txoria Txori is a poem written in Basque by Joxean Artze and set to music by Mikel Laboa, a member of the band Ez Dok Amairu .
Mikel Laboa knew Joxean Artze for collaborating on songs like Zilbor-hesteak, but did not know him as a poet.
In 1968, he went to dinner one evening with his wife in a restaurant in San Sebastián. The Txoria Txori poem by Joxean Artze (then about 25 years old), which had not yet appeared, was written on the towels. It was an act of resistance against the prohibition made by the Franco regime to use the Basque language. His wife read it to him and told him it was a beautiful poem. He read it in his turn, and he liked it a lot too. When they got home, he set it to music in a very short time. ” 1
Mikel Laboa presented for the first time the song at the Astoria Theater in San Sebastián.

As a Basque I don't consider it a folk song, but an anti-Francoist one. Due to that it was written by the Basque nationalist poet Joxean Artze vindicating the freedom for the Basque people.

This song features in the story of my novel, "Pipeline." Strife within a Basque band in the US culminates in their forest headquarters. Some members start singing this song around a campfire. As more join in, the argument stops and they rejoin one another to continue their main battle... against child kidnappers.

So proud to be Basque! I have a personal motto/ideal to live as the kind of person Franco would have hated, and I guess so far I've been pretty successful at that being Basque, transgender, lesbian, Marxist-Communist, and a Jew by choice (because Catholicism/Christianity didn't really do anything for me).
