Im all about authentic representation. I was kinda sad that Scarlett was casted for gits and im also kinda irritated that arielle is now black. Raging about Scarlett and hyping a black arielle is kinda double standard for me 🤷🏻♀️
Mark I understand where you are coming from, but it's really not a double standard because the two situations are completely different. Authenticity? Ariel is a mermaid. The original source material is from a Danish author. Ok. Danish people can also be black. and why are people ok with Disney taking creative liberties by making a talking crab Jamaican , but not ok with making the title role black? lol. There's so much deeply ingrained bias in our culture. In the specific example of Little Mermaid, children & young adults who identify with Disney's "original" Little Mermaid still have a plethora of other disney princesses to look at. Who do black girls have other than Tiana (who was a frog for most of the movie?) Black girls should be able to watch colorful Disney films - see themselves, feel beautiful & feel empowered just as much as white girls have and do. The same goes for Asian representation (or lack of) in Ghost in the Shell. Please watch the Doll Test video. This kind of stuff impacts people deeply and it impacts them for their whole lives - the influence media has on a young developing mind starts very early. Anything that society can do to reinforce a child's sense of identity in a positive way is a good thing. We need to show diverse stories with diverse characters. Period.
It's been a couple of years since I watched it, but in Ghost In The Shell, her entire reason for having the shell is because she was a victim of a terrorist attack while she and her family were on a refugee boat from (correct me if I'm wrong, again, been a couple years) Cambodia. Her race and where she came from was an integral part of why her character even existed in the first place. But as for Arielle, her race doesn't change the story or the logic of it in any way.
Edward Zo ok i get your point, she could theoratically be black. But its still strange to change the given visuals for a disney princess, wouldnt it also be weird if mulans cast was american? Disney is getting way to political with children movies😂. Alone the fact that we have to discuss this is kinda prove for that. Congrats for the black community dont get me wrong but its just another cashgrab from disney
This makes me so happy because before Jackie chan and bruce lee asians were not respected in Hollywood and now things are finally back to were things should be
As a white guy who grew up with a chinese neighbor and best friend since I was 4. He and I are both huge fans of marvel (more so me) and when I told him that they were making a shang chi movie, he got super excited and I was so excited for him. Love you bro
The main role had to know martial arts, and that's very important for this character, or any Marvel character to be able to fight. I think they did well with picking him.
Sorry for the interruption, I know this has nothing to do with the video but its for you, to whoever is reading this and its urgent. One day millions of people will vanish, the rapture is near! Accept Jesus as Lord and Savior! And Live a Faithful Holy Life! He doesn’t want anyone to be left behind! time is short! Call me a crazy person if you want too, but what I’m saying is the truth and you don’t know and realize, that you need Jesus! You don’t know Him, because you don’t go to Him! He is your only Hope. Accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, that He died for you and all of our sins, acknowledge that you are a sinner and that you need Him, repent and ask forgiveness, and believe and have faith that He is real Now once you accept Him, you will receive the Holy Spirit, now while you are alive, read your bible, follow God, and live for Him
Pretty weird because martial arts can be taught to anyone, which was the case with so many actors learning basic martial arts. Everyone can learn it within a few months. The actress Julie Estelle had zero knowledge about Pencak Silat, an Indonesian martial arts fighting style. She was taught the basics when she landed a role in The Raid 2 and because of that, she was casted much more in Indonesian female fighter roles.
GeezLuis the leader of The Eternals is Mexican but I still feel like they can take it one step further and make a Latin person headline a movie on their own
I understand you completely about Asian representation. Even myself, I was deeply touched that Asian’s are now getting amazing main cast rolls now. Especially in crazy rich Asian, knowing that all races willing came to watch it brought warmth to my heart. I as a Black Irish girl when more black representation came out for super heroes and princesses , I felt happy and felt a sense of belonging that we can be badass also and make a true mark on the world. Without being labeled as aggressive black women or too much for the world. Black panther and new little mermaid made me realize how much we lost for good black representation in the media. Not only was these movies were funny, action packed and emotional but also taught viewers about racism and different aspects in life that not much people have knowledge of. So I am absolutely proud and happy for Asian community that they are making a mark on the world and I can’t wait to see more movies like this. Because the world needs that.
As Asian myself, I think Hollywood's take on the issues of representation is anything but respectful. Remember the transgender actor in Far from Home? The dude was promoted as the first transgender starring in a Marvel film, but he barely, if at all appeared in the movie. It's sick that Hollywood capitalize on these individuals' identities but only use them as baits. Hollywood has never improved; racism and discrimination are still issues, and it's sad that people are clapping for them...
I'm surprised Tyler Perry hasn't gone outside his comfort zone and do new genres. I know his focus is comedy/dramas but he has the biggest production studios in the country. I feel like he can help represent us in a more positive light.
I cried too when I watch Crazy Rich Asian too even though I'm not Asian still is a big win!!! (Im somail) I'm so happy about this going on!! IG: letmeeatyafood
a video going back to my socially conscious roots. hope you guys feel my passion for this subject. the original video was over 40 minutes long. lol. and if you use my reference talking about the week we dominated the media (@ 9:53 ) pls be sure to link back to this video!
Diversity is important and I do understand your point but I also remember what you said before in an old video where you and everybody else didn't like that Goku is played by a white American which doesn't make any sense aswell as a black Heimdall in Thor. So diversity is important but don't force it right?
Asians are by far the most successful demographic in the United States, but who cares about that when you don't have adequate number of COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS that look like you, right? Sounds like you really have your priorities sorted. Social justice is one of the few movements that actually seems to make you dumber the more you get into it.
I really hope you’ll be accepted to play in another movie where you are the Asian lead actor, it’ll be really big for you. You really deserve that role because you care so much about representing us Asians ❤️❤️
I'm a fan adviser to mr.fiege and when I saw the love for marvel in asia i asked him to do a film for the Asian fans like he did for black panther, also eternal and others
Well said Edward. Your feeling is relatable to me and all Asians who are living in the western hemisphere. Good stuff, we are making huge progressions in the film industry and not just that, like you said, its about cultural representation and social responsibility!
@Moon Knight poc means people of color like myself it dosent matter what skin color or the shade they are. It literally means anybody who is not white. There are people with albino and you cannot call all of them white because they really pale
I had a strong intuition that you auditioned for Shang Chi. When you mentioned in a previous video about auditioning for an important role, Shang Chi was rumored in the works and I instantly made that connection bc he's an important lead in the MCU. Proud of you for doing doing the audition! Asian representation rise!😁
@edwardzo This is great and I am feeling you in this representation! This is what Black Panther did for my culture and I hope Shang-Chi does as awesome in the box office as Black Panther did! I also saw the doll test video years ago and it was heartbreaking to watch but very important to learn from. As far as Halie Bailey as Ariel, I’m excited for that too and all this backlash for the casting can take several seats, the culture needs this and it will do great as well!
YAS! I'm soooooo here for Asian representation!! It's about time! As a black women representation has always been a very hard and confusing thing to me. When there were black women on the screen they didn't represent the reality of the woman that I am and the women that I know aka misrepresentation and I feel like it's the same for a lot of other minorities! I also love that you mentioned the whole Asian male sexuality thing because it just shows that representation isn't just about putting a poc on our screen and call it a day, there is a lot of complexity within the conversation!
You are a true gem for humanity and i hope that your message will reach much more people because you my friend change this world for the better big ways keep going all the struggle will be worth it
#watchedall20minclub, I really hope this is only the beginning and that people in Hollywood finally see the talent and creativity of people that are not only white and they will be included more and more in projects in the future.this representation is truly needed for the generations to come as well as the ones already here to finally understand although we look different we are all the same and we deserve all equal chances to show what we got, I think this casting will be amazing along with the one for the little mermaid Halle is an absolute gem and she deserves the role. although I am happy for Simu I would have wished to see you casted in the role,I think you would have done an amazing job❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤@andy_mariah here 😁
I get the reasoning with Ariel and representation, but *changing already existing beloved characters isn't the way* to go. Personally, I think Halle will look like the original Ariel after the make up, hair color, and mermaid effects(just with dark skin of course), but again she was already a character. They really just need to introduce NEW characters, not change existing one.
Out of all of the Disney princesses, Ariel's look is probably the most iconic. As a black woman, I actually found myself upset with the casting. Couldn't they have done The Princess & The Frog? Maaaaybe do Pocahontas? There are so many fables/stories too that are just waiting to be told but these studios are to lazy. How about developing an African (which takes place IN Africa) princess?
Oh yea! I understand everything you're saying and I understand each party that is going through this right now 👏 one thing can make a huge difference 💋 congratulations and I'm really happy for everything that's to come
#WatchedAll20MinClub even in 2022! because despite seeing this since covid issues with your culture, I still feel the momentum is still happening and I celebrate with every Asian individual for continued representation 👐🏼👐🏼 -not to mention I found you on TT today and you're awesome- 👑
I don't get it. I watch a Asian movies all the time and they are sometimes much better than Marvel new movies. And Hollywood movies with Chinese stars always existed, like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li.
altansaikhan I guess technically yes but one he’s not live action yet and there’s been two a fully black MCU hero already. I think a good option would be Sam Alexander Nova.
Polynesians are almost never represented in movies and the latest biggest blockbuster movie we were represented in is Hobbs & Shaw. Before that, it was mainly the WWE where we were represented as savages. I'm glad Hollywood is more open to represent these nowadays so we can be more about our culture and become proud of who we are.
Children develop a sense of identity based on what they see and what the people around them say. And they also develop a bias based on what they hear from the parents. I saw the doll test video in one of my classes and I remember that my professor was crying because of the children's response saying that the darker skinned doll was bad and was not pretty unlike the light skinned doll.
As an Asian American whose parents came over from Asia, my parents thought my Asianness made me plain or ugly compared to white people. It messed me up pretty bad for a long time. I'm finally comfortable with how I look but I did end up marrying a blue-eyed white guy, LOL. THEREFORE, I'm really chuffed to see representations of Asians, especially Asian men, as normal, even desirable, from BTS to Simu. Love to see my brethren fighting stereotypes.
Coming from a diverse background I completely understand. It’s so important that diversity is seen and represented. I appreciate the Asian culture and it’s richness of customs are shown in big screen. One step closer. Marvel is breaking those barriers and I am here for it. Miss America (Marvel comics) is latina with two moms and the representation is surreal. I wish you all the success Edward and keep pushing forward work hard. All will be worth it. I saw Shang-Chi movie was amazing.
Alex Chu I think it’s important to him because that’s his area of passion, it’s also his channel so he is free to express his mind as much as he would like especially if it advocates for better Asian representation because ultimately it’s pushing for more employment and roles in that industry. Didn’t mean for it to be this long😓
I honestly hoped that either you or Ludi Lin would get the role since Shang Chi is at his 20s we need Chinese American actors who look 20 and Bruce Lee fierce for the role. Simmu's acting is impeccable in a few specific films he has starred in. But I think he's ultimately more suited to play a "Dad" role if you know what I mean. But I'm gonna leave my final judgement until the release of the trailer, although I just can't feel Shang-Chi vibes in him right now. I've looked at a few forums of China regarding the movie, and they don't seem to be too happy about the cast either.
Representation in media never really resonated with me idk why. Not a lot of ppl in mainstream media are my ethnicity but for some reason I never sought out representation. I resonated more with ppl who I felt had similar personality traits. Good for others tho for seeking out representation. Btw did you know your hat means clothing in English?
Being a Mandarin and Cantonese speaking Chinese originally from Asia, i have the privilege of having representation in movies and TV shows made in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
As an African American I understand exactly what you're talking about when it comes to lack of "REPRESENTATION" of one's culture. I feel that Shang-Chi is gonna hit "HARD" for the Asian community like Black Panther did for us. Kids of our culture will be able to dress like Black Panther & Shang-Chi for Halloween. Self Representation is important and if you don't get it or understand that this is a BIG DEAL is because you've always been represented in Hollywood. Just my two cents. Love the content keep up the good work and so looking forward to seeing Shang-Chi kicking ass.
dude...it's nice and all for Asians to finally get repped in the mcu...BUT, Asians've already got dozens of super heroes up on the big screen. and i grew up watching and identifying with them and there've been some newer ones. Bruce Lee (Shang-Chi was modeled after him) Jackie Chan (if you don't see him doing his own death-defying stunts as doing anything super stuff, then...i got no comment) Ti Lung Jet Li Donnie Yen Michelle Yeoh The Venom mob Fu Sheng (his Kwee Cheng and Na Cha are Asian super heroes) Chen Kuan-tai David Chiang Chow Yun-fat (in most of his John Woo's flicks, he's pretty much The Punisher) ...and the more recent ones Iko Uwais Tony Jaa Zhang Ziyi & Joe Taslim having seen and awed by those old school shaw brothers and harvest movies made me very unimpressed and not a fan of any of the original star wars movies... cuz when they did their lightsaber fights, they're just lame AF in comparison. 🤣🤣
I still hate the Death Note Live Action because what they did to you. They ruined that movie even though Ryuk was perfect. They picked the wrong Light lol
I'm not Asian (Mexican-American, 1st gen) but this made me excited in general for many reasons. Number one.... Asians on the big screen as something other than the very stereotypical, and often, relatively degrading roles is a big win for ya'll but I feel it as a win for everyone else with little representation in mainstream media. Number two.... it's a Marvel film about Shang-Chi and as someone that genuinely has read the comics he was featured in a couple of times before in Marvel Secret wars (good read btw) he was always someone I idolized almost as much as Spider-Man. Ironically enough, I think he was Spider-Man's martial arts master in Secret Wars lol. But he's honestly a sick character just because he's just more human than inhuman. Besides the duplication thing, it's his sheer will and ability to overcome fears and just be the best hand to hand fighter that makes him more admirable and I guess relatable. He's really just a guy that's mastered everything he touches. My last reason for my excitement is just in seeing how this will lead into other POC getting these sorts of roles. Of course they just have to make sense and not just shove ANY person into a role based solely off their ethnicity or nationality. Unless it's meant to be that specific or the role is ambiguous in nature for it to be any person.... then I don't see any issue of course. The little mermaid thing is one that I'm like "Yeah.... I think ya'll are trying too hard to pander ." Some folks would think it's racist to think that but honestly it was just not necessary at all. Even if it was someone of my ethnicity. Like... idc, just keep the thing consistent at this point and make a NEW character a person of color. Go all out and make it make more sense. 🤷♂️
omg rip idk if i'm too late because ugh timezones but i'd die of happiness if i still got a comment on one of my ig photos 🗿😩 @ wydnani btw, great video as always! representation in that way is super important and i think i have never seen an actual ex-yu actor representing ex-yu characters. most people dont even know what e.g. serbia or bosnia is but everyone knows what croatia is and i think that tells a lot
When you talked abt BTS for a second, I think it’s important to note that big names in music right now that are Asian, are not necessarily Asian American. While a “win” in some senses because it elevates asian faces in media, it may also reinforce the “perpetual foreigner” stereotype. No hate to BTS, very happy for them but just take it with a grain of salt when talking abt Asian American representation
It's very important that you know how to fight to be Shang Chi you can have the looks however that's only a minor thing when being casted as a character that is arguable the greatest fighter in the mcu.
Im all about authentic representation. I was kinda sad that Scarlett was casted for gits and im also kinda irritated that arielle is now black. Raging about Scarlett and hyping a black arielle is kinda double standard for me 🤷🏻♀️

I love ur videos and great job Edward 161.5cmr ig I’m proud of you 🖤🖤💜💜💜💜💜💜🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤💜💜💜💜💜💜
Now we need a Latino marvel hero
Also Edward you should still try to go for a supporting role in this movie!
Does miles Morales count?
altansaikhan I guess technically yes but one he’s not live action yet and there’s been two a fully black MCU hero already. I think a good option would be Sam Alexander Nova.
suh he’s black bro
You are so wholesome and inspiring, thank you!
#WatchedAll20minclub i definitely love the support and happy for you and everyone else. I cant wait to watch the Shang-Chi movie😁
Though I agree representation is important. You cant just base a video that's so biased to represent all children.
I'm Asian too, but you gotta stop whining bro. Making us look bad
Back at it again with the crap wifi eskitetit
Great video. Enjoyed immensely.
I’m proud that they are representing Asians like me👏
I think 2021 is going to be the year of Asian Lead! No need to go to politic but what do you think of Andrew Yang?
Yassssssss so so so so happy that this is finally happening!!!
Almost first :) hey from FRANCE
Ed zo yr awesome! Love from Singapore!
Love it! ❤ Good luck 😊
This makes me so proud to be Asian lmao ❤️
comments like this is why i made this video! we should be proud!
Omg yesss, the ignorance I hear from people on the topic of representation literally stuns me. They really DONT understand.
Respected Edward, 100% agree with you regarding the importance of this in asian representation.
I did not think I could watch someone just talking to the camera for over 18 minutes.
Good job!
If Edward became the main character of shang chi, that would be fucken lit
Great job Marvel...we've been waiting for an American Asian Hero! Proud to be An American Asian!! Hooyah!!
Being a Mandarin and Cantonese speaking Chinese originally from Asia, i have the privilege of having representation in movies and TV shows made in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
This is the tea👀
Big up Asian Nation, LETSS GOOO
This makes me happy❤
Last August was also Asian August with Crazy Rich Asians, Searching, and The Meg all doing well at the box office.
Do you want Kris Wu to be part of ost in Shang-Chi?
@Wendy’s Nah, i used this user somce late 2018 when i heard about the Shang-Chi is in developmeny
Wow this is the first video Edward Zo is displaying his extreme love for himself
Loveuuu😍😍😍
You are always doing great efforts sir
i love this💓
I LOVE videos like this. I’m so happy for you and all those who feel really inspired right now. Let’s push forward DIVERSITY 🖤🖤🖤🖤
Is it still possible for you to get a role?
Well said 👏🏻, love the video ❤️
Bruce Lee (Shang-Chi was modeled after him)
Jackie Chan (if you don't see him doing his own death-defying stunts as doing anything super stuff, then...i got no comment)
Ti Lung
Jet Li
Donnie Yen
Michelle Yeoh
The Venom mob
Fu Sheng (his Kwee Cheng and Na Cha are Asian super heroes)
Chen Kuan-tai
David Chiang
Chow Yun-fat (in most of his John Woo's flicks, he's pretty much The Punisher)
...and the more recent ones
Iko Uwais
Tony Jaa
Zhang Ziyi
&
Joe Taslim
having seen and awed by those old school shaw brothers and harvest movies made me very unimpressed and not a fan of any of the original star wars movies... cuz when they did their lightsaber fights, they're just lame AF in comparison. 🤣🤣
Asian gang
Yes Edward!! We need more representation!
You represent Asians really good any asian would be proud to be Asian when they see you
I really hope you do get a role in Shang-Chi. Even if the role doesn’t have any lines
omg rip idk if i'm too late because ugh timezones but i'd die of happiness if i still got a comment on one of my ig photos 🗿😩 @ wydnani
btw, great video as always! representation in that way is super important and i think i have never seen an actual ex-yu actor representing ex-yu characters. most people dont even know what e.g. serbia or bosnia is but everyone knows what croatia is and i think that tells a lot
You are sooooooooo humble, kind and sweet person ❤️💕😍
Well Said Buddy, we need more Handsome Asian Male like you representing us. 👍👏👊
KRIS AQUINO AND CONSTANCE WU IN CRAZY RICH ASIAN WAS EVERYTHING LIKE YESSSSS
When you talked abt BTS for a second, I think it’s important to note that big names in music right now that are Asian, are not necessarily Asian American. While a “win” in some senses because it elevates asian faces in media, it may also reinforce the “perpetual foreigner” stereotype. No hate to BTS, very happy for them but just take it with a grain of salt when talking abt Asian American representation
MORE MULTI-CULTURAL REP!!!! 🔥💯
Great commentary. Subbed
welcome to the fam !
Edward Zo cheers from Sydney! 🍻
It's very important that you know how to fight to be Shang Chi you can have the looks however that's only a minor thing when being casted as a character that is arguable the greatest fighter in the mcu.
do you do any martial arts tho??
Still waiting for a Hispanic superhero
Yep. I rarely hear Asians supporting latinos.
such an educational video!! love you king 💘💞💓 #WatchedAll20MinClub
Yesssss asian superhero don't think I've seen that yet
You are very articulate with your words, I love hearing things from your perspective!
Are you a martial artist?
I liked and watched all the video.
#WatchedAll20MinClub
