I used to have a 2010 2.3L 2wd ranger when I was in high school. I beat the hell out of that truck and took it places you wouldn’t believe. What people don’t understand is that it’s so light that you can cruise over all the mud and sand that everyone sinks into with 4wd. Then I regretfully let someone help install a system, and he drilled their the fire wall into the wiring harness with a power drill. Almost all of the dash lights were on, I lost air bags, traction control, windshield wipers, cruise control, you name it. But even after all that it still started right up every time I turned the key. I got stationed in Korea for a year, and when I came back I figured it was time to let her go and I bought a ram 1500. I don’t regret buying the ram, but I do think about the Ranger every day and I tell myself if I come across another nice one for the right price with the V6, 4wd, and a 5spd I will buy it on the spot. Absolute great truck, people sleep on it but I’d recommend it to anybody.
I had a friend who would often give me and one other guy a ride home in a 2003 extended cab. 3 grown up people is about the comfort limit in even a supercab
@@Larcona_ You can still fit a decent amount of shit behind the passenger seat. They're perfect for camping because you can put your cooler and crap in the cab and have a dirt bike or atv in the bed.
My ranger (the Red Bull) just turned 11 and still looks brand new. I love the hell out of it and it’s good to see someone else who loves their ranger too. I’ll never sell it and when the motor goes, it’s getting a Cummins. Anyway, I love the video and your passion for your ride. Enjoy no truck payments and drive it till the wheels come off!
Hey make sure you check under your carpet because I found lots of moisture. So what I did was I took the carpet out gave the floor a light sanding and bedliner it been great so far 5 years later and I undercoat my truck 2 times a year she will live for ever I'd say
Because realistically, no one goes camping to places that are near impossible to reach. Most likely he just goes over dirt and mud, maybe some uneven paths which 2wd with a locker are more than capable.
@ RAWPAPRSxLONG1s His model is IFS & it makes it so hard to fix it without going to very extreme mods 1997 & under used the same frames & & even 1984 ranges ha the same basic frames &you could take a 2X4 frame take the motor cross member out & put strong grade bolts in to drop 4X4 & it is a very cool thing to also use a Jeep Cherokee front diff that wheel bolts hubs/ brake rotors / shocks & coils / steering all work but the 4 link. I do know as well those this you need to clear stuff & in the IFS it is all so near & to go taller than 36" tires you need a bigger diff front & back + all the long list of parts. It gets expensive & you need to build it or pay for it to be built. Go buy the truck prebuilt at that point
That's the way to do it! Don't give in to the "newer is better" bs. Fix and upgrade what you have. It's a great feeling of pride knowing you've put the work in. 1998 XLT 4x4 V6 4.0 5speed-manual, here.
I fricking love my 05 ranger first truck I have bought and will probably keep it for a very long time. I blew the 2.3l up and I am currently working on rebuilding it myself. Love the lifted rangers with huge tires they just look so darn good. Mine will be there one day……one day. 5.0 will probably be going in it next or 4BT
Nice definitely enjoyed your walkthrough on your Ranger.... I just recently got myself a 2000 Ranger 3.0 2wd and definitely would like to upgrade a bunch of stuff like you did! I plan on never letting this truck go especially that it was passed on to me the previous owner was my wife's Grandpa that passed away. He was and still is one Awesome man!
Brother love the video and the Truck. I have the same truck, white,02' 2WD,Step side super cab, Edge model, also w/a white shell cap. 3.0V6 Lifting with shackles and new Torsion keys, and going with 33" tires. Keep up the Ranger Life, and thank you for sharing your experience.
Nice mods. I just bought a 2011 ranger xl. I pick it up at the dealership on Thursday. I'm looking forward to a long life with this one. You've inspired me to do a few mods.
Nice 👍 I just picked up a 2003 4 liter Edge with the extra cab and 2 wheel drive . Mine was old man driven and garaged so it's in perfect condition with only around 160,000 km or 100,000 miles . I only paid 2 grand and it came with a paint matched fiberglass tonneau cover that I could probably sell for 2 grand . Beautiful truck , and it's pretty fast with the 4 liter V6 engine . Only downside is that it burns more fuel than my Camaro .
cheers from another ranger owner! (used to have a 94 2wd 5 speed 3.73 lsd that I did 4" body lift, 4" suspension and stock 14" to 15" with 31x10.5 on crager soft 8s, now own an 06 supercab 5 speed 4.0 sohc sport 4x4 on 31" bfg's) I'll keep my little truck, gets many places a big truck can't, and I've proved that in the parking lot at work since stupid people don't know how to park...
Great video! I just got a sonic blue '03 edge, 4x4 4.0, flareside. I'm wanting to go a very similar direction as you did so it was neat to see your progress. Hope you still have your truck!
Just started my journey with a 2000 Ranger XLT 4.0L 4x4 Sport this summer. I'm a broke high school senior and I'm starting small with new tires, a front bar similar to the first one that was added in the video, and new tail lights. There's a lot yet I want to do to it and I plan on saving a lot of money for a lift, light bar, and an air compressor for my air horn. If anyone has any suggestions of other things I should think about doing I would love some advice. I love my ranger and I plan on hopefully making it into more of an off-road worthy truck.
You have a great truck man. I'm a fellow 2WD Ranger driver as well and Iove seeing how good this truck is off road. Mine is a 99 4 cylinder and I've only had it for a few months, but I'd like to try and get it lifted and maybe catch up with you guys next month for the annual off-road meet about 3 hours from me (I live in Nashville). Would be pretty swell. Keep these awesome vids coming
Fantastic video my man little too many lights for me that is a beautiful truck. Nothing can get between a man and his truck except for a blond Keep On Truckin brother man
Is it just me or did anyone else notice in the beginning it said 2wd but at the end when he's showing the new tires there is a cv axle up front? I guess I'm confused...
Honestly, I've realized with most of my 4x4 vehicles, I don't engage it nearly as often as I thought I would. But those situations I NEEDED it were quite memorable. However, I don't think it was a waste with your truck if it made you happy. I've even read articles from hardened off roaders who talk about how undervalued 2x4 is and how they learned a lot not having 4x4. I ramble.... But the bottom line is it's not about practical or others opinions! Almost no hobby is practical!!
If you are on dry ground and have good a/t tires, 2wd is not that bad, but with narrow street tires, a long bed with no weght over the rear wheel, and on whet ground, 2wd is terrible. My 93 f250 longbed gets stuck on a bit of ice or mud, no locking differential so one tire just spins.
You get lucky sometimes. My ranger has a flare and the cap. Same truck in many ways, down to the 3.slow. mine is green, and 4wd however, and I run 31's. Busting my ass trying to get a 5.0 swap done, but that donor is being stubborn
Looks good but with that size lift and 2wd I'd be upgrading that Ford 8.8 to a larger set of gears like 3.93's at least just to help that transmission out. Being a Ford mechanic... Have fun when the fuel pump dies! Haha not saying it will but cross your fingers cause that tank is awkward to lower if you don't remove the bed.
That price included new cylinder heads, internals, radiator, water pump, and a few other various things. Three years later it still has less than 12k miles on it. Runs like a champ.
@@smashlizard Its been 2 years already put about 20k miles on my new engine and 8000 on a built trans that was done less than a year ago. Same thing, still way under 5k you paid for the engine and stuff for both of these builds.
I don't think I have the pictures anymore but basically they are just a piece of steel bent in an "L" shape. The longer end mounts behind the fender (fender has to come off) and the shorter end has the light mounted to it. If I remember correctly, the shorter end was about 1 1/2" and the longer was about 3" long.
Why have I seen so many comments about the 3.0 not being a good engine? My 2000 has the 3.0 and I have had zero issues with it, it has good towing capabilities for a midsize, and gets decent gas mileage.
Good luck.. The 3.5 is a massive thing, and only has the limited trans options in the f150. The same goes for the modular series. Better to do a 302 with an intake, exhaust and cam..
How did you line up the bumper with the body lift? Was that a 1 or 3 inch bod lift? Also where did you get your skid plate? I am just asking because I love the way the ranger came out and hoping to do something similar with mine.
The skid plate is made by rcimetalworks and for the money it is very sturdy. Body lift was a Performance Accessories 3" kit and the bumper was built for trucks with up to a 3" body lift. The mounting holes were already in place which made it very easy to install.
this is 2wd? this is awesome I regret selling my old 2wd 94 ranger because this is basically what I wanted to do to mine to some extent.. man I wish I had it again... super super nice truck!!!
john bowen the truck is an automatic. it came from the factory with 3:73 gears and was bogged down pretty good when the 33's were installed. With the 4:56 gears and 33's the truck drove similar to stock. The 35's did slow it down a little after that but was not too bad. For 35's, I'd recommend 4:88 gears atleast.
I’m curious, I have a 2003 2wd edge with some 33s on it but about every year or so the wheel bearings give out, probably due to the weight of the tire and rim. Does anyone else have that issue?
This SHOULD be the part number TBS-54-SPLA. I bought mine over 10 years ago and found that in a google search. All flareside Ranger beds are the same from 93 on up to 05-06 when they stopped making them so anything for a "Ford Ranger Splash" should work.

zackary bowling Gave it to a friend of mine a while back and he ended up selling his truck. That was probably for the best as we were pretty sure it was cursed. Odd you are having trouble finding a Westinghouse but I have heard good things about the Aires ones. Edited because I hate typing in my phone.
Just regular ol' eBay specials, nothing fancy. I used blue locktite on the threads and check to make sure they are torqued properly every so often. Never really had a problem.
I have a 2wd on street tires completely stock. I bought it to trash it up and not care wtf happens. Been abusing it for 4 years 300k miles take it off roads about every week end and it hangs with my f150
No problem! The explorer rack (think it was from an expedition actually) cost less than $30 from a wreck yard. Trimmed 3" off each side of the crossbars and a few inches off the total length. If you pick one up it will all make sense. Just remember to measure multiple times before drilling any holes. That was a nice bonus of the 3M tape. Once I had the rack lined up where I wanted it the tape help the rack in place while it was drilled and bolted down.

thats for a coyote lmao not an old one
They're a little bit harder to find with a 2wd transmission, and it won't mate properly to the tranny from the 3.0
Does the 5.0 even fit on the stock motor mounts without cutting under the hood? Probably not, well at least it doesn't fit stock on a 1988 Ranger.

The only set of BFG All terrains I have had were 33x10.5x15. The other sets were either 235/75/15, 265/75/15, 33x10.5x15, 35x12.5x15
WhT camper shell is that
Have you ever wheeled it?
Link for the lift? The spindle and the shackle?
Fabtech I'm sure
Where can I get those wheels ams tires
What brand of wheel spacers are you running for those deep rims?
Just regular ol' eBay specials, nothing fancy. I used blue locktite on the threads and check to make sure they are torqued properly every so often. Never really had a problem.
Uh you just need a transfer case and solid front axel. 🤠
What was the lift? How tall was the lift I want it
4" lift spindles up front, 2" lift shackle and 2" add a leaf in the rear, and a 3" body lift after that. Total is about 7" all around.
Where ya get the toolbox??
Truck looks great!!!!!
I have a 2wd on street tires completely stock. I bought it to trash it up and not care wtf happens. Been abusing it for 4 years 300k miles take it off roads about every week end and it hangs with my f150
nice ranger. about to get 07 ranger myself. have same ideas in mind :)
What is the name of the song?
Very very nice
Nice truck buddy!
how did you fit the roof rack to the shell?
After it was trimmed to it I bolted it down with a nut/washer on the backside. Silicone and 3M automotive adhesive tape helped keep the water out.
Thanks! I was looking for a roof rack option for the stepside! Sweet looking truck! I also have the same model year edge, but in red.
