What makes a GOOD capo? (my non-negotiables)

  • Today we're talking capos. But not just any capos, good ones! One's made of the stuff you'd dig up 100 years later in an old barn and still find it working!
After playing for years with cheapest capos possible, for whatever reason, I’ve developed an unhealthy infatuation in finding the perfect capo. For the kind of music I play a capo is an essential tool, and I am on a mission to find the capo that best compliments the quality of these old instruments and music that we all love. And I think I just might have found it!

Just a user's experience..Kat Eyz capos (handmade by Phil Wyatt) have never bound up on me and I have 3.
Phil is a great guy and will actually custom make your Capo if needed. My favorite by far and I have many that are much more expensive!

I love my Katz Eyes capo. No problems with the threads. Have a Dave Elliott too, but the leather pad fell off rather quickly and I haven’t fixed it yet.

Yeah my leather pad keeps falling off mine too haha. Bummer about my Kat Eyz, I’m thinking about just sending the owner of KE an email and seeing if he sells replacement screws.

@@kostringworks Yeah check with him. It’s a one man shop and he’s very helpful and proud of his product. If yours isn’t working right, I’m sure he’ll do his best to make it whole. And it really is a terrific capo. I haven’t owned a fancy Elliott yet, but it’s the best I’ve found short of that.

Phil here from Kat Eyz Capos. It looks like the capo you got from Reverb is damaged and actually the wrong model width for that guitar making it not self center properly. I'll gladly replace it for you since they carry a lifetime guarantee. That is an antiqued style as opposed to my Steampunk. I look forward to hearing from you. Really enjoyed your video!

I love my John Pearse "Ol' Reliable" brass capo as well... not sure if they're still being made.

Duuude I’m on the waitlist. Something is up with their brass supplier, but it’s been years.

Kyser capos all the way for me, used them for years. Inexpensive, never had problems with intonation or tuning, easy to park on the headstock when not in use, and their cut capos are fun too.

I just caaaant do it! It’s pure vanity at this point. Haha, but yeah man the utility is second to none with those kysers.

I picked up The Glider capo from Franklin Strap last year. Sadly, it's not one-handed and not brass.
It is $30, rolls/ glides up and down the neck, and works well for me.
I appreciate the run through capoland. Thanks!

@kostringworks - I figured they were worth a try. I have a collection of Kyser capos and a D'Addario or two that aren't bad. Sometimes ya gotta scratch that gear acquisition itch 😂

Kyle, I recommend the Ernie Ball Axis capo. It is double edged - one side for contoured fretboards, the other for flat fretboards. So two in one. It snaps on quickly and works well. No adjustment but a clever concept. They sell here in the UK but I don’t know about the US. I really like your channel. Always entertaining and quirky.

Elliot capos (expensive one) are leagues above anything else. I have 2. Pretty sure I've tried all the commercially available ones and most of the small boutique brands too. I'm a capo nut!!! However honestly i keep using my Thalia capos the most. They're heavy, big, clumsy but i just like them and they do work pretty well too.

I love that you have the real deal Elliot but you still go for the thalia. Proof that you just like what you like!

Thanks for the capo demo, I have the first capo I bought years ago, recently I bought a G3 capo I paid like around 45 bucks for it, it's ok and it works but it's nothing great. If it was something I used every day I would continue searching, but I'm good for now I have a buddy I play fairly regular with and most always use the capo with him

I am so happy to see more than the Shubb. (I've four of those.) I share an appreciation/affinity for vintage/steampunk esthetics, but clean and tidy. No Kaiser style in my home...nope! Thanks for the Jake Eddy reference. Guitar Camp 30+ minutes of joy...B. Sutton, B Strings... sooo many! ua-cam.com/video/OINv0epg288/v-deo.htmlsi=dgaTydJALc4jlgbz Piano lessons this morning were challenging. I jumped up and shouted to my 25 year old music teacher, "I gotta play sumpthin' with 6 strings on it! She let me play her 6 string banjo to reset me from the dozen or so offerings on the walls of her studio. I'm gonna look up the R. Crumb style T-Shirt now... thanks Kyle! P.s. this afternoon's gift, Surfside Bar and Grill here in Mound, my friend and manager oh the hardware where I work will be singing and playing acoustic for 3 hours. 40ish... Bummer about the cats eye capo. Doesn't Reverb have some policy about defective items?
It's like Shakespeare said... nobody ever sold a used car because it was running too well🤔

    • @kostringworks
      @kostringworks  20 днів тому

You’re probably right about that, but man I hate dealing with reverb. I’m thinking about just emailing Kat Eyz and seeing if they have a replacement screw or something I can buy. It doesn’t always bind, but I def don’t trust it for gigs.

@@kostringworks many years ago I had a stripped screw on something and I followed the thread valley with my thumbnail until I found the problem spot and then used a tiny thin file to remove the blockage and open up the valley.

Phil from Kat Eyz here. Yep, I'll take care of it! That's what my guarantee is all about. Clearly the screw has been accidentally tweaked. I would never let something like that out of my shop. I hope to take care of this! Additionally, that is the wrong model capo width for his guitar. Too wide so it cocks sideways. Good video, though!
