Is this 1.5x?
No, Peter ripped a meth pipe before recording this to study the effects of zone 2 cardio after consuming amphetamines
to fit the nonsense into a short, yes
It sounded very clear and succinct to me
It's 2x then @@johncockram8883

Humans evolved eating meat. So tired of people trying to say meat is unhealthy.
True...tho i'd add..as long as its grassfed organic. Makes a big difference..its not near as inflammatory.
Ok but he said hotdogs and pepperoni... 😅
@@TheOLGILA yeah those are (many times) what the studies are counting as “meat”, as Attia notes here…. Which is no surprise those contribute to cancer. But the average layperson hears that and assumes regular, fresh meat is unhealthy.
It’s the processed meat, or meat with hormones and antibiotics! Grass fed natural
@@smithusa321
Depending the sources of meat you get. A huge difference between grassfed organic pasture raised.
Seriously a huge difference between eating cheap and high quality food
Peter attia at 1.5x sounds just like aben Shapiro! 😀😀😂😂
lol I can't un- hear this
What he has been saying has been refuted. They can control for confounders and when they make that adjustment red meat still LINEARLY increases cancer and all cause mortality risk..
Can we please call it what it is and normalize it… In these observational and epidemiological studies these are called Healthy User Bias or Unhealthy User Bias. It’s why these studies don’t really tell us anything… except that maybe a RCT is needed to confirm.
I am an epidemiologist and I disagree with this take. Dr. Attia is implying that there are a number of variables that are not taken into account when we do epidemiologic studies on diet and cancer. The variables he mentioned includes socioeconomic status, exercise, smoking, etc... The problem with this is that it is incorrect. Tons of models have adjusted for participant's socioeconomic status (income, education, zip codes, etc), physical activity, smoking, alcohol, and many others. The majority of these studies find that even when you take these variables into account, red meat consumption increases the risk of cancer.
100%
Agree with you, but large sample size studies are often observational (especially nutritional studies) as opposed to interventional (i.e., experimental). You can control for some factors but individuals are not alike and do not live identical lifestyles.
We know today that eating fat doesn't make you fat, but that is exactly what dietary scientists were saying for decades.
Cancer and Heart Disease update guidelines and best practices policies around red meat/Saturated fat due to lack of evidence involving risk and outcome from:
The American Nutrition Association/2029-2025 Dietary Guideline for American Recommendations. Updated in 2022 on page 184-187 (Red meat/Saturated Fat no longer seen as a threat in modern health conditions)
The American Heart Association/Guidelines and Statements of Professional heart Daily Updated 2018 on page 105-112 (Red meat/Saturated fat inclusive risk factor due to lack of evidence). There are many other health organizations that also update their policies
Suuuuure... And asking people what they are for the duration of the last YEAR is accurate when they can't remember what they had for breakfast...
Nobody more worthless than epidemiologists
Could we start citing studies (ideally meta-analyses / review articles) in these videos? That would be very useful and teach an important skill
💯 exactly what I was thinking.
...if only...
Look at the show notes on his website.
@@Garret_bruh_homey Looks like that's only available if you pay $19/mo to be a member which most people in practice don't do (not that it's not worth it). I think there'd be an awesome public education opportunity in providing primary source (again, ideally review articles) citations for claims made here, for free. It would be really educational both on the specific topic being discussed, and as a positive example/demonstration of the evidence-based scientific thinking recommended on this channel.
AND the meat are both highly processed crappiest of meats with nitrates & nitrites and not compared to “industrial” regular meats or pasture raised meats. My takeaway from that study is stay away from HIGHLY PROCESSED MEATS OR MEATS WITH CONVENTIONAL PRESERVATIVES. But I’m gonna continue to eat my 100% pasture raised organic beef- and my fermented goat & sheep cheeses.
nitrates & nitrites are not bad, if they were vegans/vegetarians would be dropping like flies. There are more nitrates in some vegetables than in a hotdog or salami.
Peter, I love your sharp observations that otherwise would go completely under the radar.
When you did the podcast on cholesterol, and what measures should actually be taken by the doctors to assess your cardio metabolic disease risks versus what measures the doctors actually take. Mind-blowing how ignorant of things we are. I'm grateful for you doing those podcasts! ❤
Maybe poorer communities around the world? Some are vegetarians given costs of meat and likely get more exercise naturally for work, daily travel, etc
If our bodies didn't want to devour meat... we wouldn't have sharp teeth meant for ripping and tearing... we are omnivores we need both meats and greens
We don't need meat lol.

No, in the China study, there was definitely no hotdogs and no pepperoni. Although, meat eaters were more likely to be wealthy. So that’s the inverse of what you were saying.
depends on their eating behavior. If the wealthy class in china eats like unhealthy americans and the poor chinese like the wealthy americans it doesnt show anything
The China study is bs. It's basis was feeding rats and unsustainable diet give them casein. He made a hypothesis on that extrapolated that milk protein to all animal proteins consumed by humans saw the data and contorted results to look thru are more meat and had more cancer which is more complex. Eat non processed nutrients dense wide variety of veggies fruits nuts seeds meats and get sunshine, exercise sleep well laugh stay hydrated etc. that is the key
Wealthier places also consume more refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
Pepperoni and hot dogs isnt even red meat lol. Its processed junk food. Dumb comparison
Carnivore diet for the win
Nonsense. Complete nonsense.
The problem is the amount we consume versus our exercise…
Not true. What we eat and the frequency of eating matters much.
@@StrokeToSailBoth can be true but many confounders outside of this
Smoking and yoga the two biggest killers of our time.
I agree, but go to a vegan restaurant. So many of them are actually fat. Which is counterintuitive.
It’s the way the meat is cured not the meat itself
Its also meat. Nitrates are carcinogenic but people who eat a lot of meat also more likely to get cancer but very hard to as he says detangle. Because if you're eating a lot of meat youre also probably eating a lot of other things and youre eating a lot. So the way we do science around food is very weird ..we look at one variable and try to eliminate the other variables... but we dont look at everything as a whole. Which is a huge problem in science. Because its fine if you're looking at something where you want to find out how one variable acts in a machine. Or a linear system but in a human it matters whether this person who eats meat has good gut health good excercise good muscles good digestion good mental health good sugar levels all of that. They often test something like vitamin c and say ok it didn't do anything but vitmain C needs vitmain é and zinc to even be useful in a body ... body cant use it if it doesnt have other things. So its just not a good model for testing things.
@@Padraigp Nitrates on their own are not inherently carcinogenic. It’s the conversion of nitrates to nitrites and subsequent formation of nitrosamines that can pose potential risks. Bacteria in the body and our glands also produce nitrates.
@@DardyGG yes indeed. Thats correct.
@@DardyGGfurthermore the dosage makes the poison as well. As an example apple seeds are toxic because they contain cyanide, but average adult would need to eat anywhere from 150 to several thousand crushed seeds (depending on the apple variety) to be at risk of cyanide poisoning!
Hot dog and pepperoni is not steak bro
That’s why you have meta studies my dude.
You really think there hasnt been a study that controlled for lifestyle and economic status?
Is the "problem" with red meat that in the US, the most popular way to eat red meat is with a bun and fries.
India has largest numbers of vegetarians and doubt if they follow a healthy lifestyle like exercise etc. It’s more for spiritual and religious reasons.
Thats actually a myth, most eat meat even if they say they dont
Wealth status i would suggest be an equal if not greater reason for who consumes more or less meat in India.
These conversations tend to move in the extremes and fester (to use your term: underwhelm) in the mean. I find it shocking the number of people who smoke and vape regularly knowing all we know...and yet.
My point is we've got to keep having reasonable conversations in the mean spaces and do our best to invigorate ideas around natural eating, simple preparation and ignoring processed "food" altogether.
The word for this is...confounding variables. The confounding variable makes the results of the analysis unreliable.
Nothing beats the source of all nutrition 🌱
Folks he is talking cancer ONLY, which you can't do RCTs for. Longevity is a different story, where ApoB/LDL-chol matters a LOT! even by his admission.
Dad is 89, still plays 18 holes 2-3 times a week. His diet? Red meat and potatoes, eggs and cheeses. No fruits, no veggies. The beef he eats is scorched on he outside and completely raw on the inside. He'll send it back if it not raw, while eating at a restaurant.
We're talking about populations here, not individuals. I'm happy your dad is doing well.
You gonna listen to a guy with AirPods? XD
I notice they left out the part where its burning meat to a crisp is when carcinogens come into play.
Any food that is burnt will produce carcinogens
Lasagna isn’t red meat.
It’s 100% context of how meat was raised, processed, and consumed. Were just learning what protein and fats , consumed with sugar or carbohydrates create glycation and lead to inflammation. Cancer scared me from meat, until I learned how our ancestors rarely ate them together. Meat is a big part of my recovery, so is saturated fat!Plants have tons of carcinogens , but they also cure cancer! It’s all about context.
Plants cure cancer?
All the claims on saturated fats are weak, as well as all the claims on whole unprocessed carbohydrates, both of which were part of the human diet, beef, potatoes, fish, fruits, etc. Are all healthy, all the LDL as well as glycation stories are underwhelming
Im a mechanic for a living. i dont think it's the red meat that's going to give me cancer
It's not always the case. Eat what makes you feel good
The movie FoodMatters. It would help if he could address claims made there, instead of implying all studies on this topic were made using junk meat as a source (e.g., hot dogs).
In the end, this topic cannot be summed into a sound bite.
I have a question for you, Dr. attia? in the history of mankind, what did the Neanderthals eat? Did they eat grass and fruit? It wasn't around they eat meat! This is the history of value and body. A body is designed to eat meat. We are carnivores and that is the proper human diet.
I know Over weight, vegans who drink and eats weed, don't exercise
But also instead of hotdogs you have lean beef lean meat and vegetables and fruit and then they are doing way better than the vegetarians😊
Need a video on how to read and interpret research studies in accordance to the hierarchy of research!
What about hormones and antibiotics in red meat and nitrate
Might give Ben Shapiro a run for his money
I wish I lived off hot dogs and pepperoni 😔
American marketing is brilliant because we buy the wrong things many times due to that marketing system. This includes our government such as ADA and AMA supporters. The dogma from that influences our doctors and nurse practiceneers. But I do love hot dogs with canned chili and onions.
You listen to these guys and you will get paralysis by analysis. We evolved into humans by eating leaves, some form of meat and fish along with whale blubber and berries.
Hot dogs are not meat.
That is an excellent point. It really makes you think.
I feel healthier and stronger in the gym when I include red meat in my diet.
Too much of anything is unhealthy...even spinach😅i eat meat twice/week.
Simplify Peter,
Red meat doesn’t cause cancer. The vegetarian may get cancer because humans are not vegetables. So vegetarian could have nutritional deficiency which can trigger mutation. The vegetarian are healthy because they do exercise, sleep, etc, all these other variables made them healthy NOT because they are vegetarian.
`it's not the meat, it's the motion
Its simple , go eat some quality meat for one meal and see how you feel later .
Then go eat wheat bread , vegetables, and some fruit for one meal and see how you feel in a few hours.
They've always said meat causes inflammation...but wheat , and carbs always makes me feel achey and crappy later .
They push the humane thing as well but weve been eating meat as upright hominids for 2 million years . Our bodies need it.
Even Bill gates has admitted its very difficult to replicate real meat . That tells you its unique enough that what ever it gives us is very important.
Factory farms could up their game by treating animals with more compassion...because their is a pr war against them .
Ive battled with the morality of it all but look around, 95% of people have meat in their diet . And ive known some vegans that look downright terrible. They have alot of problems with their teeth and hair . That should tell you something.
Eat meat...heal your body!!!
You forgot to say weaker.
Imagine him ben shapiro having a conversation 😂😂

All these doctor's and nutritionists in the comments are hilarious
How about everyone eat what they want and shut the hell up about it.

going vegetarian plus all those over things are likely due to an over arching input not listed. So it's not necessarily a causality.
He's so full of himself and he thinks he knows everything when he knows JACK shit. He's completely biased because of the history of heart disease and his family what he doesn't know, as he's bringing himself to the same point and future.
Life causes cancer
*Modern life causes cancer. FIFY
"I am allowed to eat whatever I like, and I am right for doing it." This statement just reeks of motivated reasoning and mental gymnastics. If it's bad, it's bad. If you want to do it, then do it, but before you want me to treat it as good, I will take a whole mountain of salt because I can't trust your impartiality.
So are you telling me doctor, that all these preaching that I should eat meat or I will suffer from some serious malnutrition effects doesn't hold up? I can overcome this dietary deficiency risks just by living more healthy and excersising (which I actually do)? I can even outlife (a great book!) meateaters who don't bother to exercise?
It's a great news for an ethic-type vegan like me.
What are you even getting at??
Understand that alot of people who are vegan specifically have alot more 1st world privilege to have access and choose purely plant based. Majority of the world needs meat to survive, maybe instead of holding a ethic stance of veganism just realize your privilege.
As a vegetarian (since the 90s), I’m pleased to say that I trust the science on vegetarianism.
Plant-based diet for the win.

I don't believe that for a second if it's a vegetarian, eating nothing but pasta. And pesticide loaded vegetables compared to a person who's eating clean grass, fed grass finished meat and vegetables and not allow carbs. I think there hasn't been studies done on that and by the way, I do yoga. 4 to 5 times a week, ride my bike on the weekends and walk twice a day. An hour each, so that's 2 hours a day walking. I find that hard to believe that because I'm a meat eater. I'm more unhealthy than a person that eats a bowl of rice with some vegetables

No he saying when people eat meat they are usually also doing other unhealthy things. People who are going out of their way to only eat plant based food obviously are doing more things to protect their health. However that one variable dosent turn into cancer. Its the more chronic and sever things like smoking, drinking, obesity, not exercising, poor diet, diabetes and, heart disease, not particularly because your eating red meat.
@@basil9633 Red meat contributes to obesity and all the saturated fat in meat contributes to heart disease. I do agree that someone can mitigate these risks by eating less meat and avoiding saturated fat in the rest of their diet, but it makes no sense that meat doesn't contribute to risk.
@@bobhill4364The carnivore diet cannot be healthy as a rule. Whilst I feel we are omniverous (plenty of evidence that we have been down the ages) the US seems to be going for big meat consumption. It's not like that in the UK. Personally, animal protein is so satisfying that I couldn't eat a lot of it. But now and again some simple animal protein feels important in my diet and I always consider and respect the origins of what's on my plate.
