Just curious… How many Bill Burr/Danny Carey/Tomas Haake fans are there among us? I can’t imagine it’s a big group lol.

This isn't "things the drumming community gets", this is stuff people who love music understand.
The icing on the cake is that this guy who is dumbstruck at the mention of time signatures has also filled the role of determining whether musical performers should get a million-dollar opportunity.
That's just something drummers say to make themselves feel special lol. "See? I get stuff, too, n stuff...." The most in-depth convo I've *ever* had with a drummer was centered around the taste of red crayons vs. blue ones lol.
@@MFKR696 the point is Bill is talking about music fundamentals, and sharing a story about another drummer that is significant to him, and Howie's response is about as productive in the conversation as a toddler putting their finger up their nose.
@@MFKR696 i'm not talking about Meshuggah, I'm marveling at how Howie is a shockingly incompetent talk show host.
@@wonderlust3054 I mean to be fair, when you know literally nothing about a topic, it's hard to just start talking about it. And what Howie said is right imo, it's not just about them, it's about the people listening. Just because Howie doesn't understand it, doesn't mean Bill should have to stop talking about it entirely.
In the drumming world, "blowing Danny Carey's mind" is something you rarely get to say.

It almost seems like he’s playing dumb to be “funny”. Like some uncle at a family get-together
My thoughts exactly, he’s all singing and dancin and shit and doesn’t know what a 4 4 beat is?
Howie is a comedian and a TV personality why would he know much about music and playing the drums?
It's so funny to me. And people who go "wHy WoUlD hE kNoW?"... It doesn't take a film major to know what a three act structure is. It doesn't take a food critique to understand why a dish works. Music is something almost all of us know and love and not knowing the most basic levels of what makes it work just makes me sad, especially from someone who relies on comedic TIMING.

You could say the mutual admiration could be measured... By the Ton.
Yeah, Tool is cool, but Meshuggah is on an entirely different level technically.
Both bands need to get back on the ball with songwriting. They've been very boring lately. Especially tool.
I wouldn't group Meshuggah in with tool in 2022, Abysmal Eye, Lignature Marks, Broken Cogg showcase Meshuggah is still trying to be creative, though I would agree they really tailed off on the back end of the album after what was imo, one of their best starts to an album yet.

Just a tad bit of trivia, TOOL (Danny Carey) had Meshuggah open for them back in 2002 for 11 shows of the massive Lateralus tour, and yours truly Drive 186 miles from San Francisco to go see it happen in Fresno. The TOOL fans back then had no idea what they were witnessing and probobly still don’t. It was soo friggin heavy and for any of you Meshuggah fans out there reading this, Mesh opened with “Elastic” yes, Elastic!!! It was amazing and at the end of the TOOL concert Tomas got to come out and jam on some stand up floor toms with Danny. I can’t believe there is no footage of it anywhere.
Saw that same tour in Wisconsin before I knew who Meshuggah was. They got a good reception but at the time I never really went back and checked them out for whatever reason. A few years later I saw Catch 33 at a Sam Goody and thought, "shit, why not?" Bought the album and couldn't believe I waited nearly 3 years to go back and check them out.
Saw Tool with Meshuggah opening for them in Binghamton, NY. Unfortunately got there late so didn't get to see Meshuggah. However, got to see their drummer come out and play with Danny Carey like you mentioned. It was so incredible. I think I just sat there with my jaw on the floor watching in amazement.
went to Roanoke from Tidewater to see that show. Fantomas opened in Va Beach for tool iirc.
I saw Meshuggah open for Tool just a couple of days after 9/11 in Columbus, Ohio. It was crazy to say the least. I’m a lifelong Tool fan since high school when they came out and was OGT since 92 since the first EP (inside Tool joke but true lol). When it all went down we didn’t even know whether there would be a show or not that week. I’ve played guitar for years and learned about Meshuggah through Guitar World magazine and got into their music. Day of the concert we are waiting outside to get in and on the marquee it says Meshuggah on the bill…I was like holy shit, I came to see Tool, but I’m getting to see Meshuggah for the first time! Me and my buddy had cheap nose bleed seats way up watching the show and it was just funny seeing Meshuggah’s audio assault on the radio rocker fans who had seats up front. They didn’t have a clue what they were in for lol most just stood there not knowing what the hell they were seeing and were probably just waiting for some of Tool’s radio songs lol Awesome show.

that is a totally kick ass story. I love that. I heard an interview with Wolfgang Van Halen recently, and he and his dad went to see Tool just before he died. Tool is one of the best bands of all time. Endless amazing songs
Meshuggah has opened for Tool on multiple tours, they know each other well. Several clips of the documentary films of Meshuggah from those years were filmed by Danny Carey.
I remember seeing Tool once in London and Meshuggah hadn't been able to join in as an opening act for Tool due to studio commitments they didn't want to interrupt. Did Tool bring in another opening act? No. When it was time for the "opening act", the venue lights were dimmed and Tool simply put on the latest Meshuggah album at the time instead. They let it run its full course. Very cool.
I accidentally met Tomas Haake at another gig (for The Haunted, we don't normally hang out or so) and I told him about that Tool gig in London where Meshuggah had "opened" for Tool without actually setting foot in the venue. He hadn't previously heard Tool had done that, but he had a good laugh when I told him. :)
I ran into meshuggah in a god damn line to see Dillinger escape plan because meshuggah was doing a f'ing album party on the other side of the building. I was just like "is that f'ing meshuggah?!"
I like how it took bill a few seconds to realize it was his voice and then it hit him like a ton of bricks. PRICELESS.

can confirm Dan Carey is an insane drummer omg
It's awesome seeing Bill Burr geek out over Tom and Danny!! So cool!!! Love it. One the best comedians of our time and on top of it he loves drums and loves good awesome music
A real great explanation of the different time signatures the drummer is using during this song. Bill clearly understands how difficult that song is to perform.
I wonder if someone can take the line "I wish his mic was on" and time it to Bill Burr doing Bleed by Meshuggah.
Yes Howie, in the drumming world it means something. We were following Bill’s train of thought completely.
This made my entire year ❤️
