One of the worst things about lockdown is that I've been unable to go to St.Albans since the Summer! I usually go every month or so. The market is fantastic and I miss walking around Verulamium. I'd definitely recommend visiting the Verulamium museum, where they keep three very well preserved mosaics found in the 1930s. Thanks for uploading this!
I used to live in St Albans way back in the 1960s residing at 319 Hatfield Road and attending Beaumont Secondary School... A beautiful town which holds many fond memories for me...
Who knows at some point this place would give some memories as well. Seems to be a great place to live if you want to live outside London but still be in reach of London
This is a great recommendation for a day-trip from London! Great tip to visit during the farmers market - visiting the local markets is one of my favorite things to do in a new place!
St Albans definitely looks like the perfect day trip, what a cute and quaint little town! WOW can't believe how old that clocktower is, it looks like it's still in great shape. That Cathedral is also beautiful, looks like a great place to have a picture perfect picnic.
I'm vegan and live in St Albans so feel free to drop me a message if you were to visit and need vegan recommendations! :) Ps it's actually a city because it has a cathedral!
@@Svenywhere that used to be the rule until the 19th century (I just googled it) ☺️ but it explains why St Albans is a city, otherwise it would probably just be a town! Eg the town of Reading is much bigger. Basically the UK is weird.
i always love your editing and commentaries on travel videos!! been watching a lot of your content recently! the music, shots and animations (zooming in and out to a certain place) is just perfect!
So close to London and so beautiful. I like the architecture, the buildings and streets are so beautiful and the Cathedral is so magnificent. Nice addition of map in the video. Haha, who wouldn't want a free haircut.
I didn't realize St. Albans was such a historic place. The church looks huge and quite impressive. It look s like a great day trip from London, nice the train ride is so short.
Ok I’m adding this to my must-see list for whenever we are allowed to visit! Haha! Yeah, you have quarantine hair going on! Love the park with the Roman ruins! So much history in one place! Crazy!
Another bit of St Albans History that I love; In the early 11th century, the Abbott of the Cathedral (Ealdred) decided to renovate the place, and in the process stumbled across the lair of the dragon, Wormenhert. The Abbot flattened the lair to make way for the renovations and that's about all they say about it; but there you go. Bits of St Albans Abbey are built on the site of a dragon's lair! Very exciting!
That is such a great piece of information. I might need to go back to do a proper history tour. Covering this, and also go into the Cathedral and so on.
What a great entry ( Wednesdays and Saturdays) to be greeted by the market stalls. Being very partial to the English villages, older buildings and historical churches I am waiting for the freedom to cross the ditch and visit the UK again. Thoroughly enjoyed the glimpse of St Albans. 👍🎥❤️🌷🙋♀️
Right opposite the train station is the building that was the old jail house, it replaced the old gate house Gaol opposite the abbey . The old gates are those used in opening scenes of the prison comedy Porridge . Outside there's an old cannon ( found in the ground during building work) originally 32lb smoothbore 1840 , later rebored and rifled to fire 64lb 1877 .. Its worth spending 10 mins looking around, at the back is an old water fountain with a sculpture that surprises everyone ( inc myself) the first time I saw it .
@@Svenywhere there's a utube vid where a guy who explains everything about the StAlbans cannon . Channel name - 'The ministry for history' - (how the Victorians recycled mussleload cannons ) Its very interesting, I knew nothing about the details of our cannon until watching the video. 👍
It looks beautiful. The street and scenic beauty looks somewhat like Bruges in Belgium. Did you climbed that tower ? Was it open during the time !! Wow the church looks so beautiful! I loved how you showed in the video.
Tower wasn't open unfortunately. Bruges has a different feel when you visit it, but I can imagine where it is coming from when you see these images, there are some similarities.
@@Svenywhere yeah I recently visited Munich as well and the tower was closed so couldn't climb on that. And not all part looked like Bruges but just some of the part in video looked like that. @@ChasingWhereabouts I know and it definitely looks like Bruges sometimes 😉 Yes I managed to cycle back with the bike at that time. Only now that bike is stolen 😭

This paella looks so tasty at 0:49! interesting tidbit about the clock tower. If you need to go to the barber soon, then so do I--haha! (Been growing out my hair since the pandemic) Did you have a drink at the pub? You know I love me some ruins. 😁
Did you travel here now by train? Where is your bike? Or that adventure is different? I like the little quaint town that St. Albans is. I would get lost in the market there. I would keep this on my list when I get to visit London. That Cathedral and Abbey church looks majestic. And yes I agree, feels like medieval atmosphere. And the park is lovely. Good place to have a picnic.
To tell you a little secret. I indeed came here by bike. But most of the people watching this, if you want to do this from London you would come by train. So that is why I kept it in that way.
This would be improved by a little background research - for example, The Guinness Book of Records confirms the The Fighting Cocks pub originated in the 11th Century, not 1756 as this lad incorrectly mentions; also, anyone who knows “Snorbens” would not make the error of describing St Albans Cathedral as St Albans Church! Still, it was fascinating (not!) to hear the fascinating story of how he was given a hair-cut voucher! 🤣
As I mentioned official dated and recorded name of the Fighting Cocks is 1756. Yes it exists probably for way older. How old exact there isn't proof for, also not if it is officially the oldest. You are right of course that the big part attached to the Abbey is St. Albans Cathedral and not St. Albans Church.

Very informative historic look around the town. The clocktower and cathedral were very lovely. I'd love to stroll those historic streets.
It is only a 30 minute train ride from London. So if you ever have the chance 😉
I was born here, went to school here and got my first job here.......I'm still here 60 years on!
