"If you're working too hard, it's not Rock and Roll! ". Gonna steal that one 😁👍. Strapping in for another musicology and technique lesson on one of the Stones' greats, with its dark feel and Brian's sitar innovation. One that still features in so many soundtracks eg the surreal scene in Westworld S2E5. Rock on! 🤘
Nice. I kind of half-assed learned this song yeeeears ago and then pretty much never fooled with it again. Now I'll have to go back and learn it proper. :)
The harmonic minor scale corresponds directly to the Phrygian Dominant scale. (Think "White Rabbit"). In Phrygian the I chord is major, while the ii chord is minor. In Phrygian dominant the II chord is major. The classic example of this is the "Andalusian Cadence".(often seen as Am > G > F > E (major)). A harmonic minor.....A B C D E F >G# A E Phrygian dominant..............E F >G# A B C D E There is a 3 step jump between 2 notes in both scales, which contributes to their "exotic feel". (I hope I didn't boor you too badly with this little rant, seriously)
Where were these lesson and youtube in the 80s??dam these lessons are so valuable to a kid these days..we had to learn by ear records or crappy guitar tabs,Mel Bay wtf is this ??I WANNA ROCK...i got lucky with an accurate note for note tapes,ROCK PERFORMANCE.That was alotta help then GUITAR WORLD N GUITAR magazine came out.they were great til the90s..Grunge...the day the music died.
OK, the scale is D harmonic minor. So, someone has already posted that, but here's the why of it. If the scale were pure minor, you would have "flat 7th", which would be a C natural. However, the V chord would be A minor, (small "v"), instead of A. Harmonic minor raises the 7th to the position, (half step down from the root), that would occur in a pure major scale. However, this song modifies the scale even further, by using a B natural in the melody instead of the Bb that would occur in true D minor. (Sorry for the theory intrusion). It's a joy to see someone using a 12 string to demo this song. Its jangle makes the lack of a sitar much less obvious.
Great job as usual. I do think on the original record KR was playing an electric..there is a clip from the 60’s of them miming on tv where he has a black 3 pickup Les Paul custom , same guitar from Sympathy and Beggars Banquet a couple years later! Of course he could be using a Casino or something else on record. I do hear an acoustic rhythm I believe and BRIAN JONES on Sitar playing that melody line . It’s a great song and record..Bill Wyman’s “zooming” on Bass is cool on the end too.
Thanks an other great song I grew up with, Time to get my 12 string out. I believe the case might have a little dust, but inside is a Yamaha 12 string from the '70s.
Don't know scale name, question for Rick Beato- but the story goes- Bill Wyman was laid on his back and pumping the riff on key board in the Turkish Whirling Dervish style. Great sitar whammy idea. 🤔
interesting. yeah just looked that up and supposedly was a printing error by Decca. There's a reference on wikipedia for it en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paint_It_Black
@@12footchain Yep. And if you think about it, it doesn't make sense with the comma. Good instruction, I've worked on this one before I think you have some good tips.

Absolute magic, just goes to show what an absolute genius Keith is, and thanks so much for showing us this amazing playing.
Lets not forget Brian. He was at the height of his powers in 66
I love these old Stones tunes!! Thanx Doug!!
Oh Wow 12 Ft ♪♫♪♫♪ Love the Stones in that time period. I still do as seeing them a few times and Ronnie & Keith solo ❤
Great lesson - the scale you're playing is called a harmonic minor. It is mysterious and a perfect fit here!
The lower octave is Em harmonic, the upper octave is natural minor.

I love your humor, playing Paint It Black on guitar with a Beatles batch on it. 😃
For us in Europe this song was not on Aftermath. It was just a 7".
i really like your teaching. Its wery uplifting.
as usual perfect lesson grrrreat teaching and tricks!!
Another great lesson on another great song! Another song I can use my 12 string on!❤️
Another great Stones tune for 12 string is, "Wild Horses".
Hello from Rome Italy! Thanks so much for this lesson! I'm waiting for a "Yer blues" lesson by the Beatles and by Dirty Mac as well!
Great friggin lesson!!!
Always enjoy
That is close to a Phrygian mode. One note different. The minor second (A to A#) is what makes the sound.

Great song and you can do a heck of a good solo in it.
Thanks!
Thank you!
@@12footchainhi thanks for the content. What is that 12 string you have there?? A Yamaha? Know what year and model?

As always excellent 👍👍👍 🎶🎸

Exactly why I started this. I want to make the lessons that we never had when we were growing up. I'm basically talking to my 16 year old self.
Great lesson, thanks so much. Having been learning modes of late, would say the scale you show is E Harmonic minor . thanks again

That was really well done❤
I’d call it the fun scale! Thx

I saw that, Ed Sullivan show
Another good one. I always learn something new 👍
You are the Best
When you lift off the index finger from a Dm shape it makes it Dsus2 shape (because the 2nd is a semitone below the minor 3rd).
Thanks an other great song I grew up with, Time to get my 12 string out. I believe the case might have a little dust, but inside is a Yamaha 12 string from the '70s.
Well that's weird. I was thinking the same thing. My early 70s (bought new) Yamaha 12 string is also in a dusty case. Time to get reacquainted.
Dude! You have a Great Ear!
Keith loves sus chords, it's definitely Esus2, Dm without ring finger there.

Egyptian rock tune !
Can you play of the outfield all the love in the world a tutorial complete please
Capos scare me more than downtuning 😆 In all seriousness, once I put the capo on, any fretboard knowledge I had just went out the window
I see a nice looking bass guitar back there, maybe you could show us 'Respectable' from Some Girls with the base lines over the A D E riffs
You're playing in Phrygian mode for the outro, same one I've always used.
ask Rick Beato about the scale .
probably a Lydian minor flat five major doronic scale if you ask me
I really think all the A chords are A7, but I could be mistaken.
Could be. Either would work
Good question, it sounds like Flamenco influence with variations, anyways still sounds good
Band I'm in does a cover of it. We play it in Am.
Maybe play it through? At the beginning? Some of us can pick it up by watching (maybe a slightly exaggerated performance) and listening...
Thanks!
I’m curious why you did not mention that you decided to do it on a 12 string instead of a six string was it originally done on the 12 string?
Was it?
@@12footchain I asked you because you’re doing it on the 12th St.
The comma in the title of the single release was an error. It is "Paint It Black."

Do you have a channel where you do your covers of the song? As in, with all the guitar parts at once? Some of the videos have it… which are awesome.
I've got a few vids like that, not the norm though. If you search "part 2" on my channel you'll find them
Sounds more like Brian to me, but, what do I know.
Right.
Harmonic minor scale
What is the name of the 12 string and it’s electric?
It's a yamaha 460S-12, but I have it strung up with only 6 strings at the moment.
Maybe Greek sounded the ending as well
See Eric Henderson do this on classical guitar.
The ending like with the Beatles did with a girl or sounded like a Greek bouzouki
Just get started please...
Harmonic minor scale. 🤓
Maybe Aeolian minor scale E F# G A B C D E
Almost like Russian sounding the
Ending
Don’t play it like the record; Improvise.
WAY TOO LONG INTRO. Get to the point. Get to the data.
After geography. 🤭
Meaning?
For me it was after physics.
Very annoying...
Huh?
