I don't think he sings at all....it's more that he picks a fight wqith the lyrics and forces them out his body with every fibre of his being, and GOD I love it!
He's kinda an eponymous singer of the band to me - he sounds like a huge, angry, wounded mastodon. Then Brann is like this metal angel, the voice you fall in love with and Brent's this bluesy, raspy, "I play guitar sitting on a stool with glass of whiskey in my hand"-type of voice (and quite possibly my fav of the three).
Troy sounds pretty good. He sticks to what he is good at and keeps things simple. Brann is the better singer. He has more complex vocal parts and has great technique. Also, he is a tenor which wins for me.
It's very moving to hear Brann speak that way about the Teardrinker chorus. Something about those words just gives me a lump in my throat whenever I sing along - powerful, powerful songwriting. I'm sure it's hit many of other listeners with the exact same potency.
Excuse me if I'm wrong but I think he is talking about how hard it is to sing the line regarding endurance/stamina and not emotion. At least that's how I interpreted it
They get power from Troy. Soaring leads from Brann and soul from Brent. A band could only dream of having that kind of utility at their disposal. That's just a part of the many things that make this band great.
My 5 year old has been asking to listen to "Ohhh myyy deeeaaaarrr." He closes his eyes and sings it like he totally gets it lol. Thank you Mastodon for being so awesome!
My now six year old Daughter completely lost it, when the fusion intro of Opeth's Sorceress startet, or I have to put on "Band Bang" by Clutch. I love how they love the same thing we do, but on a different level.
I'm the oldest of my siblings and my youngest sister is 10 years younger than me and when I got my driver's license I was asked to help with driving her around. This was around the time that Crack the Skye came out. She heard The Last Baron one time in the car and kept asking me to play it everytime I drove her somewhere. She'd sit in her car seat and say "Play the Baron." and of course I obliged. The prog metal didn't stick with her, she listens to Top 40 radio now. But occasionally when we see each other she'll ask me to play The Last Baron.
Don’t sell yourself short, Brann. I considered you the “secret weapon” of the band even before you started singing. The amazing vocals notwithstanding, you’re one of the GOAT rock drummers.
Brent’s vocals on “The Beast” stand out to me as the best on the album. All the vocals are amazing, but the vocal performance on “The Beast” is on of the best I’ve ever heard.
One of the things Mastodon does that keeps getting better and better through each record is vocals. I hope someday we'll get a fantastic new song with a chorus featuring all of them singing. I don't know why, but I feel it could be amazing.
He's lead in 2, but he's backing on at least 5. He's doing his harsh backing vocals on the Crux and Savage Lands which I'm just like 😍😍😍 and He's backing Brann with clean vox as well. Overall vox were well done and well placed on this record, everything fit where it was supposed to, no complaints. Except for Bill 🤣 could use Bill on vox too.
Those triple ascending harmonies during the outro of Gigantium, the "As the snakes all go to their ho-ho-ho-ho-holes" part with the highest one descending at the end, gives me chills. Such great vocal performances on this album. I wish we could get access to the individual tracks of the vocals and instruments and listen to each piece separately. I'd love to listen to everything isolated as there are so many things happening sometimes. You can hear parts of the isolated tracks in this clip... It feels like it would be a great fit for an apocalyptic movie, whether through success or ironic loss of all hope.
@@possiblythedevil Totally agree with you! I wake up singing the Beast everyday lately. My wife and I have loved this band for years and I must say they have definitely became the front runners for best metal band for us!
The Beast sounds heavily produced. Hearing Brent in this clip pretty much confirms it too even though it is not the same song. Brent needs a lot of production to make him sound good. It is what it is.
Troy's vocals on skeleton of splendor just shows how far he's gotten and how versatile his voice is. There's a great timbre to his voice that fits perfectly in the mix
these guys are one of the greatest bands to ever play instruments. their synergy with each other is palpable and the melodies and harmonies they create are just stunning. I love this new album, front to back there's not one "filler" song on this record. the beast is slowly becoming one of my favorite songs on this record.
Not going to lie, it was really hard for me to get into the album on release day -- but I kept listening over and over, especially this week. It's definitely one of Mastodon's bests in my opinion. Incredible songwriting.
Brann it says that you`re a wonderful musician, it doesn`t matter which instrument, voice or drums. I wish you guys to live forever because i truly love you.
First words in an heavy metal record: "Ohhh my dear". Have they become mellow? NO WAY, they sound heavy and epic as usual. What a great lyrical choice for a trully heavy (and sad) lyrical composition on the whole album.
Being overwhelmed in an instant just means that after everything you're still a human and still present enough that you continue to feel perhaps far beyond where many others become spiritually exhausted and fade off. POWER ONWARD #terrans #thekidsarealright #metalistruth
They did Brent dirty in this video. Lmao. Catching that clip of him sounding the way he did and putting it here with no music accompaniment. Edit: Oh, they fixed that by literally just having Brann sing over Brent. Well that works.
Fan since "Remission". To me there's only a few bands existing, that are so passionate and true about their music for such a long time without line-up changes. 🎶 🖤
I love these guys. Brent's opening vocals on peace and tranquility destroyed me. Same with Bran....nothing needs to be said about Troy, you already know.
It says you're as awesome at singing as you are on the drums, Brann. A multi-talented artist! Everyone in the band are bad a$$! Thanks for the double album, Mastodon! 🤘✌🖖
Been buying EVERY album since leviathan the day it was released. Loyal fan and amazing to see how this unlike most bands truly improve with every album. GWAR is the only other band that I can see musicianship actually grow over the years and not be a one trick pony. Never download always buy. And my soulmate and fiancé bought me the mastodon shirt I’ve wanted so bad for Christmas the skull-beard shirt. Best gift ever
When Bill said in the beginning none of us sang, and now Troy, Brann and Brent do, makes you wonder what was that exact time and era that it was time to sing?
They started singing when Eric Saner left the band. That was before _Remission_ was released. In the beginning, it was Troy and Brent doing harsh/growl vocals, then evolved into what they are today, with Brann also joining the party, and Bill sticking to live backing vocals only.
NOBODY SAYS THAT, BUT I THINK AND BELIEVE THAT BILL IS A GOOD ONE SINGER TOO. HE'S JUST NEVER TRIED... BUT DOING LIVE BRUTAL VOCALS, HE DO IT AT HIS BEST SO GOOD LIKE HIS PARTNERS... BILL, I THINK YOU MUST RECORD SINGING TOO. YOU GOT TALENT FOR IT, SO YOU SHOULD TRY... CAN YOU DO IT AND ACCEPT THIS CHALLENGE? NO PRESSURE... I ONLY KNOW THAT'S EASY FOR YOU... SHINE FOR ME BABY... Branns vocals are fucking insane in this !!! People everywhere !!!!!! I mean what a note what a song ! What an album !! By all of them there all musical geniuses
Oh man, Brann, speak of the devil😈I was hoping you'd stop by and lay down a single drum track! I mean, it's just one so... shouldn't take long😁😆Thanks guys, for making consistently heartfelt and rockin' records!!

Troy sings with his entire body.
I don't think he sings at all....it's more that he picks a fight wqith the lyrics and forces them out his body with every fibre of his being, and GOD I love it!
@@IlCapocuocoDiMetallo You are absolutely right! I retract my statement 😂
Troy's vocals have always sounded to me like some kind of forest spirit howling from beyond the veil.
He's kinda an eponymous singer of the band to me - he sounds like a huge, angry, wounded mastodon.

Brann's vocals are amazing on this album
Mr Based?
His vocale always sound amazing.
Brann and Troy together are just some of the best singing pair in metal history.
Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian
That's just simply not true lol Mastodon has always been known for having pretty rough vocals throughout their entire career
I love Troys vocals on Skeleton of Splendor but Brann is the better singer.
Troy sounds pretty good. He sticks to what he is good at and keeps things simple.
Brann is the better singer. He has more complex vocal parts and has great technique. Also, he is a tenor which wins for me.
Layne Staley & Jerry Cantrell
Troy has the best radio voice when he's speaking normal
His speaking voice is one of the fuckin best ever, shit is glorious. Guy should be a narrator or some shit in his free time.
Ha same. I always thought he’d be a great person to do Toyota or Chevy truck commercials voice over.
@@travistwelfthman Imagine him doing lika an Attenborough nature program ;D

Brann's heavier involvement is the main reason the band has gotten more popular.
Brent’s vocals on “The Beast” stand out to me as the best on the album. All the vocals are amazing, but the vocal performance on “The Beast” is on of the best I’ve ever heard.
The vocals on The Beast are extremely produced. Of course they are going to sound great. Compare his actual vocals to what you hear in that song.
@@cuylshepherdton7437 still sounds good though.
This song just oozes emotion, and the guitar work is supreme. ❤️
The vocals have gotten consistently better, well done lads.
Not. Enough. Brent. Vocals.
I absolutely love Brann's vocals on Teardrinker. There's just so much emotion. Probably my favorite song of his.
They're basically a supergroup ....in my opinion 🤘😬

Loving the new record! Though I will say I’m curious as to why Brent only sang on 2 of the 15 tracks. I miss him on this record
Just doesn’t give a damn about anything lol
I agree but I feel he has been working alot on his pure gat skills. My best guess anyways hahaha love the album aye!
