  • I need some parts before I can start the 1951 Chevy Rat Truck for the first time. Whilst waiting for that, I build an exhaust system from scrap pieces that's lying around.

    We had a good scrap pile and more than once I built a new leaf spring pack, or exhaust repair.
    I would install the muffler shell for now then tack it. If needed, remove tacks, slide it a drill and cold chisel some pipe louvers down into the pipe. Adding stainless steel wool before getting that far maybe be an option. I needed some SS wool for a PCV vent system I was building, and found it online but pricy. Then, my wife came home after a shopping trip & tossed me a two pack of this heavy duty shiny stuff w/o any soap! I asked her, where did you find this? She told me the "Dollar" store!!! What a find! We all know glass-packs but even the mineral wool burnt out after a while. I don't know what is inside the muffler shell you have, but if empty, a bar can shove $10 Rand of SS wool inside and be ready to modify and install incase the authorities find your current system objections. In case! Enjoy the Holidays DIV. DK.

    Yeah I like the tail pipes and some round bar trim would look perfect. The muffler is probably a good idea it helps to keep the cops out of your business.once you piss them off it just wakes them up to watch you. Safe travels to you. Diff take care.it probably would be safer if build some stands to store your plastic pipes and your old exhaust pipes. Plastic pipes are highly flammable their made from oil.

    Glad that paint can exploded and made you look before the fire got out of control. I was working in my shop one day and happened to go outside. I heard the fire crackling before I saw it. A big section of the house wall was burning. Quick call to 911 and the fire trucks from 2 towns were on their way. Trucks got here and saved the basement, everything else was gone but they kept the fire from spreading.

    The tail pipe through the roll pan was a great idea it really makes the back end look good stand out just enough, I personally like yellow but I think your right about it not helping the look of the truck , If it was me I would paint it red then fade the paint with paint thinner then paint or fine an artist at the next rat rod show paint rat rod for Africa on the spot

    Nice exhaust system ,a bassel would look good and go with the bassel around the tail lights in my opinion. I'm sure glad you are ready to suppress spot fires .I live on north Vancouver island BC and I am surrounded in trees and brush And we have drought conditions this year ,its seem to be getting dryer every year over here .Two years ago I replaced all the asphalt roofs with tin and put in a gas engine operated fire suppression system with nine sprinklers .It may help or at least I did the best that I could do to save the structures especially the old cars and tool .I keep two of those 5 gallon backpack water sprayers one at the house and one at the shop .I glad you and you treasurers are safe. Hey Diff. How's it Boet. Truck coming along good man. Fire a scarey scarey deal in the bush. I set the Pyrenees on fire. Grinding on my camper van and one spark wooffed it up the mountain. Nearly wiping out the grape harvest. I was bare foot and running to extinguish both ends of the fire with a hose feed from a upper stream with plastic pipe. Until that burned through. The fire people came and saved the day only by minutes to spare..it was time to leave that off grid property. They couldn't figure out what started the fire. But they knew where our started. Build a metal bin to contain your fire. Dry season coming. Build a fence around the scrap pile. No eye sore. Always a good source of spares. In the bush. Or make a frame and grow a vine up. Have a good day Diff. Stay safe. Lekka Boet Lekka.

    I spent way too much time and effort making pipes right off the exhaust manifolds of my Ls swap into a 62 GMC truck. I must have cut tacked fit the pipe under the truck weld it and then do it all again about 50 times. But I got it done and the O2 sensors are in the right place. I had dual exhaust pipes and mufflers from the cab back but it didn't seem to make getting up from under that truck any easier!!! Batteries blow up as well as aerosol cans. Have to watch out for those as well. I've done the fire brigade before myself. No fun at all and if you say anything about it to the suspect they want you to pay a trash collector instead !!!

    Glad you got the fire under control before it caused bad damage Div!!! Love how the exhaust turned out coming out of that hole in the valance. I agree the yellow should go. Maybe you could do some speed holes in that section and rust it out, or even cut a section out and weld in some of that expanded metal grate/mesh looking stuff with some rust on it. Or some speed holes with the mesh behind them.. Anyways 😂 Im excited to see this thing drive Div!! See ya in the next one!!

    Dif,sorry you got burned, idk with the yellow paint might be a good idea to put reflective tape in the chevron pattern for extra safety

    My vote is to eliminate the yellow spare tire cover and just go with rusty finish.

    Great job Diff! I also set my very large compost heap on fire by accident a while back. It was almost a huge disaster. Was it not for the local farming “brandweer wa” that saw that I was in trouble. It took a day to extinguish it.

    I would just get rid of that Spare tire Bulge. Just toss the spare in the bed, weld a flat panel in and be done with it.

    It was the shop gremlins that throw that can in the burn pit. Why not rusty chevrons?

    • @ratrodsafrica
      @ratrodsafrica  Рік тому

      Yes, those gremlins lurk here in dusty corners...think a rusty chevron could look good, if I can find one...

    Do cars have to go through a government inspection? Here in the UK we have the MOT (Ministry of Transport) inspection every year from when the car is 3 yrs old.
    Do we now call you Fireman Sam 👨‍🚒 💥🧯🤬. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    • @ratrodsafrica
      @ratrodsafrica  Рік тому +1

      Luckily over here cars don't need a yearly inspection! Only when there is a change of ownership they require a RWC (roadworthy certificate. This remains valid as long as you own the vehicle. I'd rather not be a fireman😅

    tell you a story since we are on this subject. this proctologist a friend of mine, tired of his profession, fighting for his money with the government insurance companies, the dirty job went to his wife ,his wife hearing him out said ,honey whatever you decide you got my back, well i want to be a car mechanic. he enrolled in mechanic university. couple years later his final exam he gets 150 mark, worried he goes to his instructor who calmes him down saying, for some one who first time in my life reassembled engine thru the exhaust a simple 100 just wasn't good enough.
