I have the Eastman T59v on getting it I sold my Gibson 335 and bought another Eastman, they sit better and feel better to me, I'm a retired 72 year old musician and had nearly all guitar brands but the Eastman being hand crafted each one has it's own character, my love to be a headstock snob has gone thanks to Eastman.
That seems to be the experience a lot of people have. I think I found in Eastman what I had been searching for with Gibson

I guarantee that if Eastman were marketed as a boutique US builder and charged 6 grand for their instruments, people would be drooling over them. We guitar nuts are a gullible bunch.
I think the Eastman had a touch more clarity, and to me it also looks better.
Own a T386 and I put in Virgil Arlo 1959 pickups before he stopped making them (before they were $3000!). Pure magic. The 1 3/4 nut and wider bridge spacing make Eastmans better than a Gibson. Actually tested the waters again and bought a 1959 reissue VOS for $6000 recently and returned it because my Eastman was just too good to keep the Gibson. It won with it’s string spacing, build quality, and pickups. Really wanted to keep that Gibson too!
I have an Eastman sb59 V and an Eastman t486 which is the 335 Style. I've been playing for over 50 years have had ridiculous amount of guitars. These are the best guitars I've ever owned hands down. These will be Classics in a few years get one now while they're still cheap.😊🍻
So if the t486 is the size of a 335 what is eastmans size for the 339?
I just played a eastman t 184 today at my local shop and it was glorious.
If it had been the right finish and had block inlays there would have been no way of leaving without it.
I couldn’t agree more, these are fantastic value right now, classics in the making. I own several and just wouldn’t consider Gibson anymore.

The Eastman is like a custom shop level 335. It's just better than the Gibson.
I have a T486 Eastman. In 2022 it sold for $1230. Great guitar. Beautiful flamed top, back and sides. Now they sell for $1599. USA.
I believe the Eastman has a solid carved maple top which makes a noticeable difference in sound, more presence and resonance, and other semi hollow or completely hollow electric guitars are mostly custom shop from Gibson, Gretsch... or smaller boutique guitar shops that can easily charge over $10K. The Eastman is like once in a lifetime opportunity to get an amazing guitar for a reasonable price, and they've been making guitars for quite many years. High end instruments made in China like this Eastman is a must have. I'm getting one .
Keep in mind that Freddie King, BB and other Blues predecessors did NOT have the option of playing an Eastman. If they did, they probably would have played them. Since the great players that started with Silvertone or Harmony still sounded great. But they chose those brands because of price.
I bought the Eastman T486, with nitro finish and S Duncan pickups. Love it. It's sooo easy to play and sounds great for blues, rock, etc. Beautiful flame maple top, back and sides. Oh yeah...1/2 the price of 335. I put Kluson locking tuners on. I'm Very happy!

I own several Gibsons. The Eastman t59v, after a new nut, has become the best semi hollow guitar I've ever played. It may not gain resale value like a Gibson, but I could never sell it.
Why a new nut?
Both are very well made guitars and both look and sound great. I prefer the Gibson for 2 reasons.
1. The Gibson warm tone. The other guitars is a little more neutral sounding.
2. So many guitar heros played the 335. From Freddie King, Eric Clapton, Larry Carlton, Lee Rit, and so many others. So it's nice to play what is familiar to you and others.

I love my 486 Eastman Best sounding guitar I've ever owned.
I started with an Eastman T486 and recently bought a Gibson ES 335. I think the Eastman is a phenomenal guitar and worth every penny. The Gibson does sound so much better tone wise.
The Eastman in the video is N O T a T486 but a T59/v which is a totally different guitar. So your comment is unfortunately missing the point.
@@bossworth3315 very observant of you and thanks for your input but I was talking about the quality and overall build. I understand the difference but as someone who has owned both I do have some experience.
@@Melonos I'm sorry to insist but you were not! talking about quality and overall build, you were talking about the Gibson sounding so much better tone wise ( your own words). The Eastman t59/v is a much higher quality guitar than the t486 with different pickups etc. So it makes no sense to state that your Gibson sounds better than an Eastman t486 when we are here talking about the difference between a Gibson and an Eastman t59/v. By the way I own and have owned several Gibson ES 335 from different eras as well as a couple of other 335 style guitars including this t59/v so I do know what I'm talking about and I guess there are a lot of other people out there who have that experience as well. One can't judge sound seriously but one can have preferences. But I can definitely say I have had Gibsons that where very different quality wise, really bad ones and great ones. The Eastmans have a very consistent quality to them.

A significant difference rarely mentioned is the 3-piece maple neck with ebony fretboard vs one piece mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard. BB King has a 3-piece neck and ebony board (and no f-holes), which he evidently prefers - Gibson makes them both ways, depending on year/model. The only thing I wish was different about my T59TV is the neck isn't as chunky as I prefer, while the ES-335 is more chunky, but I can get around faster on a slimmer neck so it's all good.
I always like the drive sounds on the Gibson's and the clean on the Eastman's in these comparisons, Les Paul as well. The Eastman Has More harmonic overtones and seems to have a little more picking dynamic. Mids and High's seem to have that bark, and you can hear the Classic recordings coming out of the Gibson. Not to say that to many the tone may be better on the Eastman. I'll say it again, I think the clean Eastman sound blows it out. But the mid range sounds better with Gibson. I would take the Gibson for lead and Eastman for rhythm lol... Would like to hear the Lollar's on the Gibson, probably very little difference at that point.
I've owned an original 1964 ES345, a modern ES335, Eastman T486 and an Eastman T59v. I now only own one of the four... the T59v, enough said.
I own 3 Eatmans a T186 all hand carved my main guitar , a Pisano 380 with real 1960 Pat app for pickups and a LP JR style. I have a real Gibson es 335 its now my back up. I guess that answers your challenge . I love the amber T59 it' s on my list!
Recently got my hands on s T484. I'm no expert, but that thing is nice!

Eastman is one badass guitar.. I played it at Guitar center... Just couldn't put it down . Plug straight into a blues Junior amp.. man it sounded beautiful.. cleans were pristine.. on the edge of breakup was just awesome.. I truly wanted the guitar so bad that I came back a few days later and it was gone.. I guess so considering it was much cheaper than new... I have a 3:35... But the Eastman is one bad mamajama
A nice Larry Carlton clean would be a much better comparison. A 335s natural setting is tone and clean. Breakup makes this to hard to hear the difference.
Eastman is just as good. Change pickups which are everything. A 2 by 4 with great pickups sounds excellent. Add a neck. Q guy just proved it on You Tube. I was stunned almost all the shit other than great electronics makes little difference in solids
For the money: Eastman -for the overall sound and prestige -hands down the Gibson.
Not anymore. Gibson has become a meme brand. I'm a session jazz player and I own an Eastman jazz box (forgot the model number but it cost me around $1200 in 2019) and a gibson L-4 (cost me around$4,000). Both guitars are great but the acoustic quality and loudness of the Eastman is double that of the gibson. I can use the Eastman in a Gypsy Jazz gig and not have to plug in, no way possible for the L-4. The L-4 sounds great plugged in but I take the Eastman on tour and gig almost always over the L-4 becasue it's jsut more versatile

I think the correct benchmark for an Eastman ***/V, varnish finish, is a Gibson Custom Shop VOS or Murphy aged, and both roughly cost three or four times much than the Eastman. So Eastman is definetly better for quality/cost, if you don't care about what's written on the headstock.
I would go with the Gibson

I think I preferred the sound of the Gibson, but they were quite close. Would a pickup height adjustment on the Eastman have made a difference and given the edge to Eastman? Maybe. Based on price and looks alone, Eastman. That varnish finish is magical.
Big difference is the Lollar pickups in the Eastman!
To my ears , and opinion, the Gibson just sounds better .
The difference I hear between these two are about the same difference I hear between two Gibson 335’s.
I have a T386 with a rosewood fretboard and Gibson PAT sticker pups. Spectacular instrument.
Another thing to note between the Gibson and Eastman is how they attach the neck. Gibson uses a tenon and Eastman uses a dovetail.
Really nice comparison. It comes down to personal preference and budget. My preference is the Gibson, it's the real deal.

Eastman is equipped with Seymour Duncan antiquity, not lollar
The model in this video isn't. It's equipped with lollars.
Eastman uses different pickups depending on model/year. I've seen the same models with different pickups in different years. They use Lollar, Bare Knuckles, Kent Armstrong, and currently several different Seymour Duncan's: '59's, Seth Lovers, and Antiquities. I've found the same model/year pickups can sound different, for instance I have Gibson USA mini-humbuckers in two Epiphone guitars, a Sheraton and Sorrento, both sound good but the Sheraton's sound better. I don't think its the guitar making the difference after listening to them unplugged too, the pickups just sound better in the Sheraton for some reason. SD pickups are pretty consistent, maybe why Eastman is going with them now - price too no doubt.
They compliment each other. I think the Eastman sounds good but it doesn't really have any mids to it.
Should have played the same music with each guitar edited the video so that the eastman sound went over the Gibson footage and vice versa.
I think people massively under estimate the power of placebo. They see Gibson and hear what they wanna hear, they see Eastman and hear what they wanna hear. Anyway, I gotta day I liked the Gibson sound more. I hoped I wouldn't. I think the eastman looks a millions times better. If I were a well off man then id just find a Gibson I absolutely loved.
for me os there no differnece in the sound! but i played them both and the Gibson is Chunkyer and a little heavier than the eastman but they are both really good!!!
I don't really understand people saying there's a difference. I can hear it on the Les Pauls, but not on this model.

At the end of the day its all in the fingers and how you set your amp.No matter if you buy a Strat a 335 a les Paul,an SG a Tele,etc..You'll never be Clapton,Hendrix,Scofield,Taylor,Santana,etc.Your own great tone or shitty tone will always shine through. With acoustic guitars that's a completely different story.
If you're a gigging musician, branding is important to you, and you can expense the cost on your taxes, then Gibson. If you're a studio musician or a hobbyist, buy the Eastman and use the savings to buy some pedals.
🤔 Gigging & session jazz guitarist here. From a tax perspective, I guess you could deduct it but when I got my Gibson L-4, I still had to dole out $4k and guess what, I play my $1200 Eastman jazz box 10 times more than the L-4 because it sounds better, feels better, and plays better

its a price point issue: both are great. gibson wins on the merits, eastman on value.

No comparison what so ever. They both sound great. Why in the world with so many options does it matter to have Gibson on the headstock for thousands more? The Eastman for that reason alone blows it away.

These guitars are for ppl in 2 diff markets. If you can afford a gib its hard to see anyone going for an eastman no matter how good it may be. But that being said if youre comparing a new sg standard to an eastman… theres an argument to be made for it and id probably go with an eastman. But if you spend a touch more for an explorer… then theres the geetar baby..
In the US the 335 Gibson is over $3000 and half that for the Eastman. Gibson has serious quality issues these days. I had a 68 335. The good ol days
Some would argue that the good ol days for Gibson were pre-1965. That said, I think they’re making better guitars today than they have since before the Norlin Era.

I'd take the Eastman guitar...25"' scale feels better. The ebony board is a huge feature, and we shouldn't even talk about their price. Find a good used T-185...all solid woods and still way cheaper than a 335.
I think the Eastman vs the modern Gibson Nashville 335 would have been a fairer comparison.
Eastman has a more mature, refined tone...nice guitar!
I dislike how close the Eastman's pickup switch is to the volume knob. How are you supposed to quickly change mid-song? I've always thought it should be in the same place as a Les Paul

@@basheideman Actually he's playing an older version of the T59/v. You can tell because it doesn't have a pick guard. I think they may have had Lollars. I have the newer one with the pickguard and SD Antiquities. Love a Gibson 335 of course (Memphis I mean), but my T59/v really has a vintage 59 sounds like a real old one, rather than the modern 335 and is really beautifully appointed.

A big difference between these 2 guitars are the necks, Eastman is maple with ebony fretboard, while the Gibson is mahogany with rosewood. That is a huge difference. I mean, they cannot be really compared equally.
I'm surprised nobody pointed that in the comments. The Eastman sounds brighter? The Gibson is warmer.. The Eastman is airier and has a snappy attack ? The Gibson has more depth and is smoother?
Well that's mahogany vs maple, nothing else.
These 2 guitars cannot be compared, so I see no point debating at all.

Also, Eastman uses Mahogany in the center block. It’s sandwiched between maple but it’s a pretty thick piece. Not sure if this compensates for the maple neck but worth noting.
I’ve not actually tried an Eastman yet but I’ve tried some modern 335s that were not great. I’ve also played older ones that were phenomenal. It’s a tough choice and it’s obvious that if you’re buying a guitar that your hero’s have played you’re buying Gibson, but if you want a guitar that was built like a really old Gibson and you don’t have 5 figures to spend, maybe Eastman is a good choice. The jury is out as I’ve yet to play one.

Doesn't the t59v come stock with DiMarzio Antiquity pick-ups? That would have been a better comparison.
Using stock pickups, the T59 is just flattened by the 335, though I think that's more the fault of flubby A2 magnets that the SD Antiquities use. They're not bad, just balanced almost to the point of being muddy. Dropping some Throbak PAFs into it would definitely even it up.
I have a T486 and swear by it...but in this vid...the Gibby sounded better. hmmm....

i had an eastman...sold it...I prefer the gibson for the thiccer neck and tones....u can get a 335 all day for 2500
Plus Gibson uses nitro and get the Plek treatment, while Eastman uses a catalyzed urethane they call "truetone". People are saying the antique varnish they used to use feels better than the truetone 'varnish', but Eastman says the antique varnish is very soft, while the truetone is harder and thinner? I just ordered a T59VT AMB, which I had mistakenly thought was the same as the antique varnish, was upset after learning it's actually the truetone catalyzed urethane finish instead. I tried to cancel the order, but it had already shipped, should be here in a couple days. I can see the antique varnish is very soft, so every little bump leaves a mark, as does your fingers below the strings. I like the hardness of urethane, and the satin urethane feels good on the neck, but gloss urethane has that plastic feeling I don't like. If the T59vt doesn't feel good I may return it, and get an antique varnish version, or maybe get a Gibson 335 for a couple hundred more...?

For me, PRS is the most overrated guitar brand ever.
I owned a higher end PRS and I must admit, it did live up to its name in my opinion. It just didn’t vibe with me, so I got rid of it after less than a year. I got an inexpensive Jackson in its place and man.. that thing DOES vibe with me!
By the way, do you have an idea on how they manage to be so much cheaper??? (Rethorical question of course) yes the guys that make these Eastman are earning way less than the guys making the Gibson, and don’t have any similar social coverage...

It's made in China which makes it a lot cheaper to produce. It also lacks the Gibson name which adds a bit extra on top
owned both now. Sold the Eastman. Built quality on on Gibson was better to me. A bit more clarity. As well, which suits me. Gibson is expensive. But to me the history combined with the quality has more than an edge over the Eastman. Furthermore I just try to avoid supporting Chinese economy.😁

Well, the Eastman just doesn’t sound anywhere near as good as the Gibson…not even close.
The Eastman is a perfect wannabe. The Gibson is simply a great original.
