Listen to the whole album as it is still relevant 50 years later. The "power man" is real. But then so is Lola; Love is real and it is where ever you can find it. I like being around folks that are in love, although their choices aren't necessarily mine,. I just hope to learn that some of that love rubs off and becomes an ingredient in my life. This album was the first time heard of that possibility. "Apeman" is another relatable fav from this album.

The lyric "...I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man, and so's Lola." is very cleverly written, because it can be taken two ways: -
    1. He is glad he's a man and so is Lola glad he is a man.
    2. He is glad he is a man and so is Lola a man.
Incidentally, in Britain the words "Coca-Cola" had to be replaced by the generic term "cherry cola" because the BBC would not play a song with "product placement" in it.

The clever thing about the line is that it can be read two ways: Lola is glad he's a man too - or - Lola is a man too.
That double meaning allowed the song to avoid 1970's censorship in a lot of places.

The song "Lola" is about an encounter between the protagonist and a person named Lola in a club. As the song progresses, it becomes clear that Lola is a transgender woman, which is surprising to the protagonist at first. The lyrics describe how the protagonist deals with this realization and finally accepts that he is attracted to Lola anyway.
The song addresses gender roles, identity and tolerance and was very progressive for its time. It was even censored in some countries because it was considered taboo at the time to speak openly about such topics.
