    Would have been fun to participate in this recovery. Lots of work and man hours. Getting it done without injury and also with great respect for the Hawaiian environment is a great accomplishment that none except the people involved will recognize or appreciate.

    Were the Seabees involved. In my memory they had great skills in all sorts of construction and rigging. We had an ex Seabee mechanic at a powerplant I worked at. He could "walk" any backhoe type to any location you needed.

      I believe I read some place that they hired a recovery firm. Would have made a really good episode of Highway Thru Hell or Heavy Duty Rescue :)

    Never understood why the Navy shut down NAS Barbers Point and moved everything over to MCAS Kaneohe. Being on the Windward side of Oahu, Kaneohe always has a problem with heavy rains (which I believe contributed to this accident). You also went from 3 runways at Barbers Point to 1 at Kaneohe.

      These were the conditions - don’t seem great but not terrible or a downpour.
      “Visibility was down to around a mile at the time of the incident, with wind gusts up to 21 miles per hour and mist, according to the National Weather Service.”

      @@wdcjunkAs a former insurance adjuster it doesn’t take hardly any water on an unprepared surface to make it lose friction especially if the brakes lock or so e other failure. Similar incidents happen rather frequently with commercial carriers. I will definitely be interested in following the class a mishap report when it comes out.

    Wow! This brings me back to when one of our F-4B Phantoms went off the runway & into the drink at NAS Key West. Man what a job tearing that plane down piece by piece / cleaning and rebuilding. I believe that pilot was relieved. That's the scuttlebut going around then. Somebody's in deep shit for this one.

      Same thing happened to the CO of 232 in '82-the overrun gear saved the Phantom from going into the water. I watched it happen.

    This plane is as good as scrapped. The fuselage has been immersed in salt water and the corrosion will not stop. But the airframe can be used for static display or training.

      This particular crash must've been caused by a different all female crew than the one the Navy highlighted in September though, because they were VP-45 (Jacksonville, FL) and this airplane belongs to VP-4 (Whidbey Island, WA).

      in fact -if you look carefully when it gets pulled back to the ramp , the nose goes way down in the tide and they say oh Hell and pump up the cradle bags and then pull her up. So even more salt water ingress (specifically to electronic modules) might have happened at that point.

    I remember way back when I was a high school NJROTC cadet, we toured NAS Alameda, and they had a P-3 Orion there they pointed out as a "ground training" aircraft... They said it had been in some sort of accident and could never be returned to airworthy again, but, could be used for maintenance practice, and ground training on various electronics. Sort of like a big simulator.
    I suspect if this P-8 doesn't go directly to the scrap yard, that it will join that (probably long scrapped now) P-3 as a "Ground training article" now that it's been dunked in salt water.

      @@user-eh5cr4or6k Yup... THey may be able to save those. It's the hundreds of miles of wiring harnesses and the aluminum airframe that are probably going to be a loss. Look, maybe they'll be able to save the aircraft... I'm not an aircraft mechanic - but i've lived near the sea my whole life, and once you dunk stuff in the ocean, it's pretty much wreckage.

There are many female aviation heroes, both civilian and military - their numbers limited only by misogynists like you.       You ever hear of Dale Snodgrass? He was the hot shot F-14 pilot who killed himself a couple of years ago because he forgot to pull the control lock out of his airplane before he took off.
      Anybody who knows anything about aviation will look at this accident and say, 'It's a reminder that it could happen to anybody.'
      By the way, this P-8 was based in WA. The all female crew you are thinking of is from FL.

      Almost a month partially submerged in salt water? I think it's safe to say all the onboard equipment is a write off. Might even be cheaper to write the whole plane off and order a new one

    I was stationed there at K-Bay 81-83 MAG-24 VMFA-232 & in ALL my time there-NEVER EVER witnessed an arrival on 04. EVER. And yes-it can rain there. Bigtime. One can watch the squalls come in from the Pacific. Plus-04 has a downgrade component to it as well

    Any part of the airframe and components that have been exposed to salt water will have to be removed and replaced and everything else would be considered suspect. I hope they don't waste taxpayers money trying to repair this aircraft.

      Every wiring harness, all the electronics anywhere near water, the engines, and the majority of the structure will be trashed. I'll be amazed if this ever gets into the air again... except maybe in pieces, courtesy of a wrecker.

    Interesting. I'm no expert on these things, but by way of observation, the spoilers are out and the thrust reversers are deployed, and yet she still put it in the drink. Did she land too long down the runway, and instead of going around, opted to try and stop? I know that's what inquiries are for and they'll sort it out, but it seems to me that someone on the flight crew made a miscalculation.

      Fair point, maybe there was a fail in one of the reverse-thrusts ? Or maybe a tailwind gust out of nowhere?? Seemed like they could have used even an extra 200-300' of runway? Or a tail hook arrestor.

      I can't find any evidence that this plane (which is from a completely different unit/location to the one in the “all female crew” article) had a female aircrew. It's probably just some fake story that crusty old boys like to chuck around.

      Yeah, it's a well documented fact that no airplane has ever been crashed by a male. That's why they called it a cockpit. This particular crash must've been caused by a different all female crew than the one the Navy highlighted in September though, because they were VP-45 (Jacksonville, FL) and this airplane belongs to VP-4 (Whidbey Island, WA).

    I was stationed at K-Bay 1983-1986. That spot is at the flightline edge and one of the PBY-Catalina ramps, near the dolphin pens. VMFA-232 and VMFA=235 parked the F-4N Phantoms there. I know that flightline well.......

    It was later found that the plane crashed because it was being chased by a squadron of German FW 190s and sustained hits to the #1 engine.

    Does that apron go into the bay to accommodate the air cushion landing craft? If it does, might explain why the landing gear wasn't damaged?? It will be interesting to see what damage seawater has done.......

      My dad flew on test flights of military flying boats when he worked for Convair in the 1950s. The U.S. gave up on such impractical beasts a long time ago. It turns out that salt water isn't good for aluminum.

      @@randomnickify Look it up. The company who owns the type certificate for the Catalina and who does the refurbishment of old planes back into flying condition is in the process of getting customers for new production. They are going to put turbos on a couple of the old planes first as a test. They figure that since the Catalina already has a type certificate, they can do this as a mod instead of trying to certify a whole new type.
      (I found this info a while ago this evening in a Popular Mechanics article)

    I would say the airframe is a Complete Total Loss/ Write Off as its been sitting in the water, although its Fresh Water, Salt could be a problem as its been built up in the soil & Salt water can contaminate Aircraft, Every Part of it.

    I remember in the Caribbean, I used to fly out of this island that housed the older P-3's and I remember how they almost always had to go around when the smallest amount of rain showed up, and we had pretty high mins. Made me wonder just how good these guys really where.
