Ian McKellen whether in a heroic or villainous role is magnificent. Listening to him he is down to earth and a bit of the show off but not pretentious. He is quite educated, experienced and has a great sense of humor. He is definitely one of our great actors.

fuck you quennie, you just don't get it .this film was just over your head, maybe when your older you will understand movies that don't have things blowing up or lots of naked boys in it,. so , just grow up and learn to enjoy a movie for the sake of the movie it self( oh , that mite be too deep for someone like you !!)

I really love this movie! Sir Ian, Laura, and Milo were superb! The English do it better than we Americans, I believe, because, they take such care to deliver beautiful sets and cinematography. To Mr. Ian McKellan: I do go to the library (going today as a matter of fact), and the greatest pleasures I get from library days are the heavenly scent of all the books when you walk in, as well as being around other people who love books. I still remember the day I was able to get an adult card. I was so proud to finally be able to check out any book in the library, instead of being confined to the children's section. Not everybody loves books these days. It's getting rarer, I fear. Anyway, I spend hours there and get as many books that my book bag will hold, and I bring them home. I really hate to leave the library. I keep the books through both renews, until I'm forced to bring them back, and then I do it all over again. I take full advantage of inter-library loans and holds. Library days have and will always be such VERY special days of my life.

I knew nothing of Laura Linney before watching this movie, but many congratulations -- it seems to me that making a character live when you're acting against a master like Sir Ian McKellan (and a really delightful child as well!) is a bit like shouting in a hurricane and being heard a hundred yards away. Her character could so easily have disappeared, or become the nuisance we endure while waiting for Holmes, but Ms. Linney succeeded brilliantly in getting my attention and empathy for her as well.

Sir Ian's "Richard III' is a fabulous, and strangely hard-to-source film: Didn't realize before listening to this how much of an "independent" effort it was!
The story is moved to an imagined fascist 1940s Britain... Richard's mind and the intent of the play is made more clear than in any other version I have seen. Highly recommended!

I guess, since the final questioner from the audience is wearing two of them, Google were giving out plastic bead necklaces....I thought Ian was maybe a Hari Krishna devotee for a moment....Great film, just found out about it today and watched it illegally...oops, sorry, I meant " immediately " ( well...both ). No-one makes English films about English characters quite like the English.
