Gives me chills, no matter how many times you watch it. I was on the floor in front on the TV at the time, my beer in one hand, my head in the other... all you could do was watch, hope & pray... and we fucking did it! What a brilliant day. Our campaign may have ended in heartbreak this time around, but it's these kind of moments that stay in your mind. This is why we watch the world cup! England 'Till I Die! Roll on Euro 20!
It still gives me chills watching it now, all I can say is that evening coupled with the atmosphere at the bar is something I will cherish forever. 2020 Euros are coming home!
will never forget this moment, as a 25 year old English lad all I had ever known was loss in these situations. It almost didn't seem real, when Jordan's penalty was saved it felt like the same old story, but it wasn't. People say Trippier's free kick was the best part of WC18 for an England fan, but for me it will always be when Pickford saved that 5th spot kick and I knew we were finally going to win a shootout.
I absolutely agree, was in a packed pub at the time of England V Colombia nervous and tense just watching those painful penalties, but the emotion and joy in the room at that penalty save was so real and never experienced anything like it... Then bam dier seals the deal and the whole pub exploded and erupted I nearly lost my phone jumping and raving with everyone! Forever stay with me I think! 🙌🏾
Pickford saving that pen should definitely not have told you it was going to be an England win. Guess you haven't dealt with all of the letdowns over the years :/
This is one of the single-most greatest pieces of editing in the history of the world. The level of detail, emotion and synced-everything just blows my mind, presses every emotional button and leaves me speechless.
Agreed. It is amazing how you can find great art in the strangest places. My favourite part is when it shows David Seaman cheer as Pickford makes his save. Like a proud mentor would. It ties the generations together. Every English player (and fan) is involved, past and present. The single moment transcends time to become something truly patriotic
Even though we didn't win this world cup and lost in the semi final, this was the best year supporting England, to finally win a shootout in a world cup was just incredible and this manager and team seemed to bring the country together, getting to a semi final of the WC for the first time since Italia 90 and a squad that played their hearts out
Southgate has dispelled every stereotype of the English team by winning the shootout and beating Germany, it really does feel a huge moment of change for the team
I actually now own a Euro 96 England away shirt with “Southgate - 6” on the back because of this moment. There’s just something so emotional about the fact that the player who spent so many years as the poster boy for England’s penalty shootout heartbreak became the manager that broke the curse.
Don't be sad it's over. Be happy that it happened. They were phenomenal. Things are changing. England have always feared the dreaded shootout, and lets be honest, when the whistle blew for penalties, most of us gave up. We all thought the same thing "Surely not again... Not after all this..." and we all feared the usual result, the result all many of us have ever known. But not this time. This time they lifted the penalty curse. They may as well have lifted the cup.
I genuinely can’t believe this is 2 years ago now, I remember every detail of it from the anxiety and fear to the complete jubilation afterwards, that night will be one we will never forget
That sinking feeling as an England fan. "I can't believe this is happening again" Watching the shootout, not ready for the fairytale to end just yet, knowing it could be just a few painful minutes before the dream is over. Standing in the pub with your best mates and that last penalty goes in and the beautiful realisation that this intoxicating dream continues for at least a few sweet days and nights. There's nothing like the world cup in this world, the hopes, dreams and heartbreak. It's absolutely infatuating, intoxicating and inescapable.
8 months on and I still can't believe we actually won a penalty shootout. In my 20 years as an England fan before this penalty shootout, I had witnessed England go into a penalty shootout in France 98, Portugal 2004, Germany 2006 and Poland/Urkraine 2012 and I had witnessed England lose all 4 of those penalty shootouts. When Henderson missed his penalty, I was like here we go again. When pickford saved Bacca penalty, I lost my shit. When Dier scored, I screamed the whole house down. The penalty shootout curse had finally ended
As a 30 year old man I'd seen england lose 5 penalty shootouts in my life time. Winning this shootout is the single greatest moment I've experienced as an england fan, even over the trippier free kick. This was the moment of redemption for all those years of heartbreak. The only time I've cried with joy at sport.
Literally could not have been a better story if it was told in a movie. Gareth Southgate, a player synonymous with penalty shoot-out failure, is the manager to lead England to break the penalty hoodoo. Best moment watching football of my life so far.
Like anything, the BBC has its pitfalls. But my god, can they pull off tear-jerking edits for sporting events. Be it the World Cup, the Olympic Games, the Euros, the Six Nations… the BBC nails it, every single time.
Agreed mate. Tournaments like this really get you on a personal level. As a kid I thought I'd never get over losing on penalties to Germany and it seemed like the team never would but this game lifted that curse
Summer of 2018 was my favourite as an adult. I just found out I was pregnant the week before the WC started. The weather was absolutely stunning. I was at the time 31 approaching 32. I’ve seen so many losing penalty shoot outs, terrible tournaments, is crashing out of games we should have won. I was not expecting much at all, my only hope was we’d get further than Spain (my husband is Spanish). I very rarely watch anything other than England and Spain games but this tournament I watched most of them, there was several good group game clashes, the VAR being introduced gave us about 400 penalties. I was enjoying the tournament. This match, when the equalised I just feared for the worst. My husband was at work so I was screaming at the TV. I know we didn’t win the WC but for me this is one of my ultimate sporting highlights ever. I’ve watched this montage so many times over the year. I watched it daily during lockdown. It kept me sane. It still gets me even now.
I'm happy to witness, like millions of others, England winning on penalties to progress to the next stage. In fact I'm fricking happy to see England develop, hopefully they'll go even further.
Michael Cain Yeah same. At the end of the day though, we lost to the team who simply played better football on the night. We got further than anyone expected, and we weren't knocked out due to any injustices like we have in the past. I'm excited for the future because whilst we had a bit of luck with the bracket, we were very un-England like this world cup, what with winning on penalties, scoring a last minute goal against Tunisia and battering a team we would normally scrape past. All this with the youngest team in the tournament. Hope to see you 2022 when it really does come home (this time I swear) :)
georgew01 absolutely. Croatia played brilliantly in our game so well done to them. It’s weird how only 2 years ago we were all hating the 3 lions after Iceland and now, they’ve brought the whole country together and made us so proud of them. If they bring to the euros what they did to the World Cup, I think we’ve got a very very good chance of winning it. And hopefully it’ll be the same in 2022.
I too am dissapointed. But who wouldn't be. England simply are not used to going so far so well. Even in the Semis we held the advantage for a portion of the game. But Croatia simply played better. This young team went so so far in a world cup that was only meant to give them some experience. Southgate has done so well as manager. He is showing them that playing for their country can be far more rewarding than playing for their club. Football truly came home this year, they brought this country - a nation fractured by division - together in a way that i simply have not seen before, no matter your class or background, you were behind them all the way. The first semi final in my lifetime, and i hope the first of many. "Maybe times ARE changing" Maybe they just might be. We have a world class keeper at last, and a phenominal team. If lingard could just finish it he would be world class as well. He does the hard part easy and the easy part hard.
To be honest, even if the team made it to the final, France were way too good and would've annihilated them. To win on penalties and get to the semi final is historic though.
@FuckingHateTwilight So what! The past doesn't mean jack shit. They already made a World Cup semi final and also a Nations League semi final in the last 12 months, and only have themselves to blame for not making the final in both competitions. I'm not even English but clearly they will be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come. It's pretty easy to see that they play as a team now far better than they did when they had the likes of Terry, Ferdinand, Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney etc. All of them have since gone on to say that they just didn't get along and want to fight for each other such was the rivalry between the top clubs in England.
Fair play to dier the whole nation was resting on his shoulders there, gives me chills watching this back doesn’t matter what happened in the end against Croatia these moments will stay with me forever
The Scots Irish and welsh all take the piss but we witnessed and enjoyed this night whilst they sat all bitter and twisted at home 👍🏻 We will witness world cups like this again and they will forever be in the shadows. Let wales celebrate one euro semi final when they still couldn’t beat the worst England team in years.
Exactly! They will never get this kind of opportunity ever again like we do. Their that bitter that they have to celebrate another countries loss instead of actually celebrating what their own country is achieving, which in all fairness isn't a lot ;).
I got bit emotional watching that. U can tell how much it meant not just to the players and fans but the boss. Southgate knows all too well the pains of losing a pen shoot out. For him leading a team and them winning the shootout must have felt like winning the World Cup itself
My best moment from 2018 :) I was a wreck and couldn't watch the last two. As soon as we missed i thought it was history repeating itself. But our lads came back and i was so freaking happy :D
Kids came back downstairs to watch it, they didn't grasp the enormity of the win. They remind me I said ' oh not Dier' when he walked up to take the 5th one.
An unbelievably good world cup in so many ways, and not just because England far exceeded my low expectations. Russia put on a great show and everything seemed to run smoothly, so credit to them. But it was one of the best because of how many countries caused upsets and the success (in my opinion) of VAR to give teams that don't cheat the advantage they deserve and punishment to the teams that do.
Kevin Prior I’m only 20 so I haven’t seen that many world cups but it was a truly awe striking moment when we won that shootout. I’ve never ever been more proud of a team than after that Colombia match, especially because of the way the other team played
Great world cup! England made it a memorable one for once, a hazy summer that brought me tears of joy, as that penalty shootout win was such a huge relief! completely agree, one of if not the best day of my life, don't even care we didn't go all the way
It still gives me chills watching it now, all I can say is that evening coupled with the atmosphere at the bar is something I will cherish forever. 2020 Euros are coming home!
I need to stop watching this and crying every time I get pissed
That's where I am now, brother!
😂 Still doing this in 2024

Had to come back here today. Thanks for everything, Gareth
I genuinely don't think I'll ever be as happy again
Sure you will...when we lift the trophy next year! :D
what a bloody time to be alive that was, eh? what a time to be in a beer garden with your friends or whatever people did.
My life peaked then
Happy today? (;
You sure, we just beat Germany last night lol
This is one of the single-most greatest pieces of editing in the history of the world. The level of detail, emotion and synced-everything just blows my mind, presses every emotional button and leaves me speechless.

Song is “England” by The National - just in case someone is looking for it. :)

@@williamchapple8886 well then...
@@RealGaIaxy yeah well, you’re born an England fan I guess. This team could go another 55 years without a trophy, but it will always be my team

Still watching and loving this in 2024. Superb montage, never fails to have me in floods.
Two years ago today. What a moment, what a montage perfectly encapsulating it all. Still gives me chills!

2018 was by far the best year of my life.. absolute scenes
That sinking feeling as an England fan. "I can't believe this is happening again"

Unlike Gordon Bank's save in 1970 against Brazil, that match will be the most unforgettable save ever. People will say is better.

How is psycho not on this montage? Or did I miss it
Still find it annoying that ITV showed the match. Also the only time we won a game that was live on ITV.
We won every match that was live on the BBC.
Yep. The ITV curse is real.
