My sister's last name is Carter. And she and her husband named their preemie daughter Cora Mary Ellen Carter after this song. She passed away last night at eight days old.
Stan Rogers was one of Canada's greatest lyricists and musicians and "The Mary Ellen Carter" is one of his best compositions. As a former entertainment writer I have dozens versions of this song and only heard very few persons do justice to the song - Stan Rogers - it's author, John Allan Cameron - who made it one of his signature songs, The Irish Descendants - who performed it at Stan's tribute concert at the Rebecca Cohen and your group. Your version is the closest to Stan's that I have ever heard. This is not a light praise. The simplicity of your arrangement is all this incredible song needs. Your vocals and the harmonies are superb. I needed a little Stan Rogers to get me through the day and came across your version and am incredibly grateful to have found such a remarkable rendition.
Stan’s son Nathan does an amazing version of the song, which is to be expected as he sings just as well as his dad. Mischief Brew also does an excellent cover too.

As a long time Stan Rogers fan of 38 years, this was an amazing cover and the banjo was an interesting touch in place of the violin. Thank you very much.
Wow! You did justice with this folk song cover!!! I love the strumming of the guitar. It complements your singing very well! Vocally, you're superb too! I really enjoyed this a lot. This is entertaining to watch and listen! Kudos to you! ~ Leeron Tai, Pianist of Leeron Tai Music
I have taken solus from this song so many times Rise again, rise again! Though your heart it be broken and life about to end No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend Then like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again! Even at my.lowest ebb this song has sparked something in me to get back up dust myself down and start again
Back in the day when a quarter of a million Canuck fiat bucks actually had some weight. Nowadays it's a quarter of a run down shack in a shitty part of town. Why? Why is this? It's those "laughing drunken rats" again. God bless the late great Stand Rogers, best Canajan songwriter ever!
Hi Davis - thanks for listening! I started with the chords in Stan's songbook and then approximated the intro/solos by ear. I never wrote them out, but if you don't have the Stan book, there are pretty good chords available here to get you started: tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/stan-rogers/the-mary-ellen-carter-chords-82157
Depends on which definition old timey one? no. Music genre yeah! Boring explanation: sea shanties are work songs sung in a rhythm with a shantyman who gives the sign for the people to start synchronised actions like pulling or pushing ropes. The modern definition includes songs themed about ships and the living on it.
Yeah, I think I basically agree with all of that. A true "sea shanty" should be a rhythmic a cappella piece, I think. But this is still an awesome song.

Sorry to hear that. Condolences to the family.
You know how the song goes..
God, I’m so sorry, love. My deepest sympathies to you, your sister, and her husband.
Wishing peace and healing…so very sad.
The Mary Ellen Carter is hands down my favourite song, I get chills every time I hear it. This was a really great tribute :)
Thanks - me too..
If you haven’t taken a listen, Nathan Rogers (Stan’s son), The Longest Johns, and Mischief Brew all do excellent covers that are well worth a listen.
Stumbled upon this, really nice.

the longest johns do a good cover of this
VERY nice - good job. Lovin' the banjo! This is one of Stan's best. Have a go at Make and Break Harbour.
Thanks! Make and Break Harbour is my mother's favorite Stan tune so I'll have to do a video for it here eventually for sure.
I agree, Jim, the banjo adds a whole layer of awesomeness!
Wow, this is awesome. If I close my eyes I see Stan😉👍

Well said. I agree wholeheartedly.
Great stuff guys 👍👍
Great cover of an inspirational song (though not a shanty). Barrett's Privateers is a shanty! Another one that could use a Laskin 12-string. Thanks.
Well done good sir!!!

Amazing, see you in a couple months when your channel blows up!
LMAO - can't wait!
Absolutely love your version….my dog, Merry, and I are listening to it ….does she hear her name? I like to think so.
Love that!

Your clones are very impressive. You must be proud.
Thanks, Ray. The cloning technology is still very new but I'm proud of the early results :)
What’s the strumming pattern on the guitar?
It's not totally consistent (at least I'm not!), but basically I would say: 1 2& &4&
