  • This case is based on publication in literature by Harrison R, Warburton V, Lux A, Atan D. Ann Intern Med. 2019 Sep 3. Link below. Non-clinical elements (e.g. initials, story details, etc) are adapted. Peer Review: Dr. Nikhil Parelkar.
    I originally had another case for video of a vitamin b12 deficiency I saw as a student about a girl on an overly strict diet. I didn't release it because the details were more difficult than I would like for a video. The clinical principles and science of that case and this one are the same.

  • @zisaletter4602
    @zisaletter4602 2 роки тому +239

    man - ARFID needs to be diagnosed and treated properly. I have it, and due to incredible care from my fiance we've managed to graduate me to eating varied spring vegetable salads with spinach and chard and stuff. I could barely eat romaine lettuce a few years ago. I can eat candied pecans and sunflower seeds too, if we mix them with other things. ARFID isn't a laughing matter - it's not just picky eating - but it's also not untreatable. You _CAN_ work with it and through it. Forcing kids to eat things that they can't stomach isn't going to help - but just letting them only eat three things isn't going to help either. Sensory-based disordered eating needs to be respected and addressed in kids.

      Is the key to happiness success? Or being comfortable with who you are?
      ...what is success anyway. To be define by each. So first be you, then be happy.. and if that leads to financial or social success.. win win, if not, whatever. You are still happy.

    As a women with a plethora of autoimmune afflictions, one of which being the MTHFR mutation, I know how important B12 is, especially when the body is too dysfunctional to absorb it in sufficient amounts. This was an interesting but realy strange one.

  • @alantew4355
    @alantew4355 Рік тому +3

    There's something unexplained by the video. The boy's B12 level in the blood was normal (see 4:11 and 6:03). That was why the doctors did not suspect malnutrition at first. 12:31 The diagnosis was B12 malnutrition due to his poor diet, and subsequently, he was given B12 injection. If so, then how could his blood B12 level still be normal in the first place? The video mentioned malabsorption from 6:03 onwards. Malabsorption means the person has B12 in his diet but it isn't absorbed from his gut into his bloodstream (due to an autoimmune disorder that prevents the production of the intrinsic factor needed for B12 absorption, for example). But this wasn't what the boy suffered from. It wasn't that the boy could not absorb B12. It was simply because there was no B12 in his diet. And if he hadn't been eating B12 for so many years, how could his blood B12 level still be normal in the first place?

    • @BumboLooks
      @BumboLooks Рік тому +1

      You can have ordinary B12 blood levels and be massively deficient just as a morbidly obese person can have a stomach that contains no food.
      B12 deficiency causes slow long-term damage and blood levels fluctuate up and down. There can be B12 in the blood despite the Central Nervous system being starved of it.
      So many Vegans have serious mental health problems despite having a close to normal B12 blood level.
      The boy was clearly an autistic kid that refused to eat anything other than chips.

      This is what I’m saying. You have to be a really shitty patent to do this. I clicked this video thinking it was about a poor potato farmer who could only afford to eat his potatoes, and he just came up with cool ways to cook em. But it’s just some spoiled little shit who won’t eat the chicken his mom cooked him

    Wow. I have been getting monthly B12 shots for the past 9 months. Doctors couldn’t tell me why I was so fatigued all the time. On a fluke, I decided to go get a B12 shot at a clinic and within 3 days I got my energy back. I can now tell when it’s time to get my shot. I start getting fatigued, despite getting enough sleep. I also improved my nutrition this past year and changed my diet. I’m almost 50, and I feel better than I have in years. Nutrition definitely makes a difference

    Well as a someone with ARFID I have experience with doctors not taking this seriously (even if it caused me to end up in hospital) and many of them not even knowing this food intake dissorder exists or sometimes even accusing me of "just beeing picky eater". Doctors need to take food intake dissorders seriously and offer help (there are treatment for some but not all food intake dissorders-for me all treatments failed so far but for all suffering with ARFID: you can get better, small steps and never giving up on at least trying new food but never force yourself because you can end up having a panic attack and than never even be able to be in the presence of that specific food that caused this ever again)
