  • Molly explains how to give an Adequan injection to your dog. Adequan is a prescription medication that is injected into the body. The active ingredient in Adequan®Canine is polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG). PSGAG is characterized as a “disease modifying osteoarthritis drug". Injections typically are started twice weekly for several weeks. Then depending on response, the injection frequency is reduced. Please call your veterinarian if you think your pet may benefit from Adequan.

    The vet told me that there have been recent studies that proved that subcutaneous Adequan injections work as well as intramuscular. This is much easier and allows you to give the injection anywhere you can pinch some skin and safely get the needle in. I think it's probably less painful for the dog too. Anyone who started this drug more recently was probably given instructions for subcutaneous injections.

      Yea thanks for mentioning this because this is entirely different from how the dog’s physical therapist had showed me. I’m just looking for a recap for subcutaneous

    i’m a dogsitter who found this mid panic attack because i agreed to administering an injection that i thought would be much more similar to insulin than it is and then became terrified i would do it wrong and hurt her. researched PSGAG and all, read and reread the script instructions, was still terrified and uncertain. this video saved me from a breakdown and saved a dog from a decent amount of arthritis pain. thank you so much. videos like this help so many people and animals, and i wish there were more immediately accessible mainstream outlets to find instruction & advice from professionals like you 💕

    Thank you for this excellent video. My vet showed me how but of course being by myself at home I started getting nervous about administering the injection and whether or not I was remembering correctly. I feel so much better about doing this now. Really great breakdown and pace and easy to follow. My dog and I thank you. ❤🙌

    Great job. before I gave my first injection of adequin to my dog I watched your video many times. Been doing it now for 5 months no issue. The drug is a miracle for my current black lab and past dogs..have always had 3. My lab is over 13 and he also gets previcox and gabapentin. He is fine. The combo works..Thanks again for the help

    A decade ago, with very little training, i successfully gave our diabetic cat a sub-cu insulin injection twice daily for 4 years. That's about 3,000 injections.
    Until this vid, i had no idea how many things i was doing wrong!
    Now i am about to start giving my arthritic dog adequan injections.
    I wish either vet had given me this info...

    It is crucial to understand that Adequan Canine is a prescription medication that a licensed veterinarian should only administer. The importance of veterinary oversight cannot be stressed enough, as improper administration or dosage can lead to serious adverse reactions, including death. Your veterinarian can help you determine if your dog is the appropriate candidate for Adequan Canine and guide you through the dosage and administration process. It’s also important to note that regular check-ups with your veterinarian can help detect any negative side effects early on, ensuring that your dog receives the best possible care.

    Is an IM injection more effective than a subq injection? I’ve given it twice IM, but I’m worried that I might hit the sciatic nerve and the last time I gave it there was a little scar, so know I’m watching it to make sure it heals OK and considering giving it subq instead.

    • @sarahchristine2345

      I have the exact same question. Some vets state the injection can be given below the skin and others say only IM. The Adequan medicine website says IM only. Clarification would really help.

    Hi Molly, can you explain why you inject the air into the bottle? When the Vet Tech showed me how to give this to my dog she didn't mention the air thing.

    • @timmeserth3932
      @timmeserth3932 3 роки тому +2

      So... I am not Molly, but if you don't inject the air prior to drawing out the Adequan you create a vacuum in the bottle making it much harder to get the exact dosage because the vacuum force wants to draw the syringe closed. My target was 1.3 ml and the syringe kept re-injecting the Adequan back into the bottle to about 1.1 ml until I removed and re-inserted the needle into the bottle (resetting the vacuum). Obviously my experience / procedure was not the best practice... highly recommend you pre-inject the air before drawing out.

    My vet refuses to write a prescription for Adequan for our German Shepherd, Sadie I have given dozens of insulin injections and although this is IM, I am confident I can administer the injection. Sadie has terrible anxiety and it unnerves me that I have to give her a dose of Trazedone just to take her to the vet for an injection that takes a total of 15 mins. from the time we walk into the door until we leave. Really disappointed with our vet and we've been going to this clinic for 15 years. I need to find another vet who will accommodate us. We have 5 dogs (4 Poms and Sadie) and our vet knows we are excellent pet parents - probably the BEST clients he's ever seen. Honestly, we spend thousands of dollars at this clinic annually so it shouldn't be a matter of financial loss for the clinic, BUT I can purchase 10mls of Adequan for the cost of 2 injections at our vet. It would be great to be able to administer this injection myself (with my spouse to assist) so Sadie does not have to be given a sedative.

    I’m not a vet but I’ll be completely honest, I will insist my vet give the injections IM. I know a lot of vets say SC injections are fine, but I think it’s mainly for patient and vet convenience. It may still work SC as an off label use, but if I’m spending this money trying to help my dog I want to make sure I’m giving him the absolute best chance to feel better. My vet is a 30 min drive (1 hour round trip) and yet I am willing to take my dog there twice a week to make sure the injection is given properly. I would never even attempt to give my dog an IM injection and I’m a first responder. Perhaps when it becomes maintenance time I will consider administering myself SC, but not before then.
