I have dyslexia.. I graduated last in my class and failed out of college. I'm 46 years old and have a net worth well north of five million dollars. All of the pain I experienced during my childhood still lingers with me today, but has made me who I am today. God Bless!

Same here. I was put in a group of Slow Learners at school, but debt free by the age of 30 and have never looked back.
I was fortunate in that my ego would not allow me to believe what I was told, that I would forever be an under achiever.

When I was 8 years old I learned I had dyslexia and ADHD. I worked hours after school and sometimes would be absolutely whipped. But due to the hard work of hours and hours of practice I am now seen as the smart kid. It’s weird though knowing my past and seeing my present and imagining the possibilities of my future.

God I wish I had access to this information when I was at Middle and High School, I was so depressed and resentful or my Dyslexia growing up. I thought it was a bad thing having Dyslexia, rather than seeing it as a asset. I would of lived my youth much differently and not go to University to fit in and trying to meet girls and get laid!! Only now am I truly learning about my Dyslexia and embracing it as a strength. Those videos are so incredible for Dyslexics.

Thank you for these talks! I am proud to have a dyslexic child. She is very smart, yet we were told she was lazy in school. Homeschool is a great answer for us. I feel sorry for those students who are not served by the system, there is so much potential the schools don't realize, because they teach "inside the box"

This is the best view of dyslexia I've seen so far as for once emphasis isn't on reading and writing but more on the bigger picture and how it can affect us in different ways. Everyone else just tells you its reading and writing and I always hated how limited a view that was towards the subject! Great Talk! :)

I have a dyslexic sister who draws like Picasso........ but because she can't handle school at all....she is left to doing not much with this great ability that she does have. She is also incredibly athletic... played Varsity soccer, ran track, placed in states etc. She is nervous about being in situations where she might be asked to answer a question or read something or fill out a form that she can't decipher. She took drivers ed and drives great but has never even bothered to try to pass the actual reading part of the test. She just can't remember things, but has heightened abilities to remember other things. She is actually really smart. She notices things like someone who might be left alone in a crowd of people. She will feel badly for that one person that maybe no one else would notice. I feel that everything concerning her involves having a lot of money to help her. So many of us don't have that.

aria levasseur She needs to be pushed. Im dyslexic, and sometimes I need someone to push me a little bit. Not a shove but a reminder. If she can draw well, she should be trying to develop that. Im good at music but no one appreciates it most of the time so I dont bother anymore.
Just keep encouraging her, and keeping her challenged. Dyslexia can be a heavy burden or a great gift. But just like super powers, they can be used well or wont be used at all.

I'm, as well, dyslexic... and I value my vivid imagination. I love looking at buildings, all built spaces, and seeing what is within. I can see how things stand, and why things fall. I love seeing the way complex systems function and operate. I guess this would explain why I am a visual artist :)

I was diagnosed as dysgraphic in my final year of my undergraduate degree. I passed GCSE's with flying colours, but systematically failed all of my A-levels... I was told that I was lazy, arrogant and "not as smart as I thought I was".
Having a word for it, is not always the most helpful, but I am trying to learn!

Procedures are very difficult for me. So I embraced a year of General Chemistry and I created my own formulas for every problem because I thought 'their has to be an easier way' and surely their was. I'm passing all science classes with A's. We do need to learn how to unlock our own hidden pontential. It took me many years but with the right support system for our youth students, they can succeed in months (if not faster).

At 15 leaned how to tie my shoelaces. I tied my laces only once and keep it until it loosen by itself. Tie somehting is always a scary experience for me. My dad always telling me why you cant do this and cant do that. I have a bad hand-eye-brain coordination. Started learning how to drive since 14 years old and only at 20 I have the confidence to actually drive. I wont touch manual cars ever again. Bed wetting until 5th grade. Losing balance whenever I play soccer and kick the ball. Being laugh at for clumsiness.
I am more into dyspraxia but this video had changed all my perspective. I am now playing with strength rather than trying to correct my weaknesses.

Speaker’s stories on TedX are the exceptions. Any disability needs huge support. The first thing is to get them out of schools. Give their parents the break to be able to address their children’s needs. Find them means to suite the way they learn what they like to learn.

I was fundamentally useless at school, a failure in the eyes of my Teachers and the education system...
However, I excelled in practical learning classes and workshops such as automotive engineering.
One of my old teachers still uses me as an example today when dealing with dyslexic children in the classroom...
We were all set a task to rebuild these old 1970s straight 6 chevy engines on engine stands in groups of 3s for the term project...however, he made me do mine alone, as i was always a distraction to others and a bit of a clown (little did i know he was testing me)
I had mine finished and running in 2 weeks with 8 weeks to spare....Once i got on a role with this old thing, i was working through my lunch breaks, tearing it down and building it up piece by piece...learning as i went.
I was 13 years old and It was the first time i ever felt "achievement" in a school setting.....

I can give you a good hint in 30 seconds: Accommodation in the class makes a lot of difference: if the teacher does not make the student read out loud or go to the blackboard, or expose his grades, a lot of stress is taken out and this alone improves learning quite a bit. The initiative can come from the teacher or the student, who can comunicate to the teacher about his condition. A amazing tool to improve reading is AUDIOBOOKS, Audible and Librivox (free) are sources of audiobooks. You can even read the Bible and listen to it in audio with free apps, if you are into scriptures. If you´re not, Librivox has thousands of books, even in philosophy, in audio. Get them in paper and do the multisensorial combo.
Watching movies with captions also help. These few hints WORK.

Then you need to research differently. I have found many videos, articles and research papers by scientist talking about learning strategies for dyslexic people.
      Try to ask yourself,
What passionate and credible person can help me with this, and where can I find them on the internet?
This helps you find the right sources. Use Google to navigate the internet, be critical when you use it as an orcale.

I totally agree, everybody is talking about what is dyslexia, dyslexia is a gift, how many famous people have dyslexia etc. But nobody really gives a solution, so what's the point. As a mom of a dyslexia child, we know much better than anyone about dyslexia, but we only need a practical method to help our kids.

There is no answer. No two dyslexics are the same. The struggle to learn in normal school makes us stronger. The shame of poor grades had to be dealt with but you have to find your own path.
I really needed permission to find my path. I struggle on the normal pathways but Excel outside the lines. Permission to color out of the lines is the most important thing to take away

mmm, well you know all about it, but no story, I feel your dyslexcia was and is mild. But as it is, Try growing up in England and Scotland with Dyslexcia in the very early sixties. One spend a lot of time crying, not due to the learning disorder, but the pain of being beaten everyday, with lots of lovely tools that teachers had at the time, fencing foil, belts, weighted spilt cain, walking sticks. Hockey sticks, cricket bats, wow and worst one of all, the hair brush. Ahh laddie you had it easy.

Yes, using tons of audiobooks, listen to audiobooks instead of music, great way to get info in less time. Listen to then while running, resting, whatever. Audible and Librivox are great sources, Librivox has a app and it is free.
Also, reading a book while listening to it in audio improves dyslexic vocabulary and spelling. Watching movies and series ALWAYS with captions on helps a lot.
That means everytime you sit down to watch Narcos or Walking Dead you will improve your vocabulary a bit. These WORK.

Private schools often don't have as much money to hire extra teachers as you might think. Despite charging lots of money they don't all makes lots of money. Private church schools often struggle financially so trying to send teachers to conferences about special needs just does not happen.

I had to laugh when you mentioned learning to tie your shoes. I was 8 years old before I could, and this only because I had a very patient mother who worked with me. I still tie a bow crooked. I think my dyslexia is about where yours is. I can read...I just read very slowly. I misspell words I know how to spell. But everyone seems to think I have a great imagination. The trade offs are worth it. I wrote a blog on writing with Dyslexia at scablander.blogspot.com

If you took the word dyslexic and change it to say, black, or Hispanic. What would you think he was talking about,an then added that a large percentage of us are school drop out and in jail. (That is a fact, look it up.) What would you say then. 1/3 of the most influential people on the globe are Dyslexians. No longer should we play or obey to the 2D's (That is what I cal them, 2 denominational) We are dyslexian, and we need to stop playiing by there rules and create are own.

A minority is still a minority, creating a different system for a minority is probably not going to help much without the majority buy in.

It doesn't sound like you are/were ever Dyslexic, if you didn't/haven't had a reading/spelling problem. It seems with the attention, shoe tying, ect. issues are more along the lines of Dyspraxia. Or maybe an underline issues of Sensory processing perhaps, but certainly not Dyslexia.

    • @dragonoftaters
      @dragonoftaters 8 років тому +3

+anita Blake He may have dyspraxia, but dyslexia, dyspraxia, and dysgraphia as well as ADHD often go together. I personally have dyslexia, but it doesn't affect my reading and spelling as much as it does my speech, concentration, and fine motor functions. The way the dyslexic brain is wired can often cause neurons to be attached to areas that they shouldn't, so the motor area of the cortex being attached to the language processing center. This can result in signals being lost or sent to the wrong processing center and cause unexpected and seemingly unrelated effects. What he has is actually quite similar to what I struggle with. I love to read, and don't make many mistakes, but I struggled to learn to tie my shoes, remember sequential information, and speak without stumbling over my own thoughts or the pronunciation of words. No two dyslexics are the same. It is a spectrum, much like autism is.

Hey Duck, bit of a flashback first...I came to terms with the fact that i have slight to moderate dyslexic and ADHD conditions (meaning for most of the times my spelling or reading is not exactly horrible but every so often I read slowly and have to trace what I read with my fingers so I don't get lost, and read the same line at least 3 times before I comprehend what the heck it's saying) but unsurprisingly a much higher than average IQ proficiency when I moved to Australia because of the extra resources around to teach about all this stuff, I originally come from Tanzania, East Africa and from quite an endowed family as well which proves that the only thing lacking back home is generally the education surrounding the existence of such gifts (they're not really disorders in my opinion) and what they mean in terms of the future of the person who has them...I found out what I was good at by not fighting what my mind was focusing on at particular points in time instead of maybe what i was supposed to be doing at that time because they almost always converge to a common interest, for me it was a fascination in nature and all kinds of technology from a very early age, but I could only know this about myself after I realized I wasn't just dumb or stupidly demotivated as I initially thought of myself based on the academic norms instilled in me when growing up.
