there are some seriously indestructible, lush green plants that would only need to be watered once every 2-4 weeks or maybe even longer. They would also be SO much cheaper than faux. Pothos, philodendron, parlor palms, ZZ plants, snake plants, spider plants… even monstera are so trendy and tolerant of neglect. i would be so mad if i paid that much for a “motel” then noticed the entire hotel is covered in faux plants.
Agree! My old workplace (coincidentally a national chain hotel) had a deal with a local florist to use her succulent arrangements as decor. She would come switch them out every 2 weeks - around the time they needed to be watered or cared for. In exchange, she got free publicity and was the first florist on the list for any orders that came through the hotel’s concierge. My point being, like you said, there exist a million and one options to bring in live plants into a motel without resorting to fake plants 😒
@@dramaqale12 Yes! A really nice corporate office I worked in did this as well. We had numerous live snake plants throughout the building and every two weeks a florist came in to water/refresh them. We also used this florist for arrangements the office sent out.
The worst part of this show was how poorly they spoke about the town, and how clueless they were about how that came across. Saying things like "The one thing this town desperately needs is a good restaurant" but this is their first time there and it's off season when most things are closed. I'd love to know the townspeople feel about this show.
I wondered about that too. Great job making friends with locals and their businesses by saying they're all terrible. Maybe I dunno, instead go find a nice local bakery or coffee shop that could provide fresh baked goods & coffee every morning to your guests and help support the local economy instead? Or commission a local artist for artwork for the rooms or lobby? Even with the gift shop they could have sourced some of it from local businesses like handmade soaps or teas, a town t-shirt, etc. Help the local businesses/townfolks want to want you to succeed! -- They just give such a, "we know best, we have taste because we're from the big city and have to bring it all in from elsewhere" vibes.
I absolutely hate fake plants too, it's like the opposite of why you'd want plants in the first place. Plants are for life, air, nature, and plastic plants just feel so gross.
As someone who has lived in the area the hotel is, I can tell you that this is not going to go over well. The Northern summer season is maybe from late May until early September (if that), so for them to make enough money to keep this up and running will be difficult. Also, the types of people from this area are generally not into this type of decor. We have a lot of hunting, fishing, and outdoor sports in that area. I just don't see locals LOVING this eyesore. I think their guests will come from watching this show and wanting to be a part of it, but the demographic is not right. These ladies have no clue IMO.
if they had paid more attention to the locals then maybe the restaurant could bring in business over the winter season, but I don't see Rick and his buddies going there for oysters and rosé
Also closeish and my husband works for a company that has a small hotel. They make most of their profit from wedding in a historic wedding venue that is attached to the property. Running a small place that doesn't appeal to locals is not a smart idea.
No clue because they're arrogant and very self centered.. They think only their ideas are best and the rest of the world should addapt to them and act like them!!! Look how they treated Rick.. The name of the show should've been; "narcisistic twats renovate hotel to hoetel".. Because that's what they do; sell their souls for money and become a one dimensional, superficial, attentionhungry pain in the..
I was hoping when their friends stayed they would give them some home truths about the practicalities. Like they never spoke about enough plug sockets and ones with USB chargers. They type of thing you expect in a recently renovated motel/hotel.
YES! And I kept thinking, "They aren't mounting that? Where are the closets or places to hang clothes? Where are the dressers? Where are the hooks for a towel or robe?"
We were told in the 1970s during the energy crisis that we had to lower all ceilings to 8’ to save on energy costs/use. In about ten years time millions of gorgeous historic buildings were chopped up by cheap grids that suspended those square or rectangular acoustic tiles EVERYWHERE.
Please do a video on executing a non-cringey gallery wall! I know the best tip is to thrift but I don’t have a lot of good, authentic options in my area. I would love your advice
Very much not the person you asked and I don’t have the training/skills she does. But if you’re looking for the art itself, check out local artists. Not vintage and 100% originals but more original than ikea lol Farmers markets, Etsy, Instagram etc.
Ironically it did not really lower heating bills - that was mostly a marketing ploy. They were also put in as a cheap way to hide duct work and wiring that was added when people installed AC units and overhead lighting in older homes.
Okay, so glad someone else said all this. I cannot, cannot believe that they got custom wallpaper and ended up with something that looked like a pastel print you would have seen on 90s paper napkins.
I was so confused about that. Like if you're gonna spend money, THAT is what you chose? Not any kind of statement piece? You could have replaced it with so many cheaper pre-done wallpapers for way less than whatever they spent and it look almost identical.
@@nataliersutton I really thought it was going to be that cool print with the blue waves! They kept picking the same blush/ yellow colours over and over.
I love hearing your take on this show. It's funny that when I watched this series, I thought about you. HAHA And they are going for this 1970s retro feel. I'm 51 years old and remember the 1970s. They are NOT doing 1970s retro vibe. They've done more of a mid to late 80s high end look that most of America didn't pick up on until the early 90s.
I'll admit I watched this whole show in one go because I love this concept and I secretly want to do something like this, but someone please tell these women that liking avocado toast and rose is not a personality trait.
There is no way I’d pay $300+/night to stay at a motel of any kind, but I definitely wouldn’t pay that kind of money for this even if it were officially a hotel. Not my style, I hate the colors, I hate the artwork, I hate everything about it. But I love watching you hate it, it’s the only good thing to come from this disaster project.
So true - $300 for a motel is so excessive. And banking on summer for income is a terrible business plan, which is why I think they want to charge $300/night. Rip off lol
@@crossingjunipers such a ripoff! And while they said in episode 1 they want to accommodate families, let’s be honest- that place is for single 20 somethings or young couples. I’m an old lady of 36 with three kids, and not only would they not like the decor, they’d destroy it (two of my kids are toddlers). But I think they’ll run into the same problem- drunk people will destroy their cheap materials just as easily as toddlers will. Oh well, at least they’re getting their Gram moment 😂
Actually all the tourist accommodations on the Bruce Peninsula rely almost exclusively summer profits and most restaurants and other businesses there are seasonal, particularly in Sauble beach and Tobermory.
They did a thing with Toronto influencers about a year ago, The Sorry Girls were there... And I think it looks better after it's totally done (based on their vlog). But I'm not a fan of the neon signs and fake plants. It reminds me of a slightly nicer, trendier Jersey Shore Motel.
I cringe when they paint well built, solid wood antique furniture instead of bringing it back to its former glory. But they do have skills and make some great builds.
@@elsiehupp I love those two, but sometimes I get a bit confused about their choices. They're better overall thougj, because they've spent so many years practicing their craft in front of an audience.
@@moonbeeps The Sorry Girls had an “upgrade my stay” series going for awhile. I didn’t like all of their choices, but they seemed to be working with some very tight budgets and considering that, things worked out fairly well.
I think in Canada having a drop ceiling is important to retain heat. Exposed beams and such are super nice but they add a lot of space to heat in the winter.
It also dampens the sounds, thats why they are in so many offices (still ugly but at least a purpose). There is a reason the industrial looking restaurants with exposed beams and brick everywhere are so loud and unpopular for people with hearing aids.
Drop ceiling became popular in the 70's during the energy crisis. Oil was expensive and we were at the mercy of OPAC so heating your home was expensive. People also bought smaller cars
I guess they saved money on accessories and decor by going to Walmart. This contractor’s facial expressions and reactions to their suggestions is the best part of the video
Having also watched the series, I agree with your opening assessment that it’s essentially a train wreck. You don’t want to look, but you can’t turn away! As for the difference between them calling up their parents for help vs. you having your dad help you set up your apartment; I’d say it’s a question of skills. Your dad helps you establish your place, he’s your dad and you’re living there. And if he needed help starting a UA-cam channel, you’d be helping him. Whereas their constant refrain of “Girl Boss” seems to take a hit if they’re constantly running back to their dad. “You just spent how much on this place? Should’ve budgeted for the preliminary stuff you needed.” At least, that’s what I’d hear if I called my parents asking them to cut their established rates because I can’t budget correctly.
After my husband came home from Vietnam in the early 1970’s, we became interested in purchasing real estate as prices and interest rates here in So Cal were low (but not for long). We first purchased a little Spanish bungalow for our love nest, then moved on and bought a 6 unit concrete block motel on Route 66 which we converted into studio apartments. We of course kept the old neon sign with the words “Dun-rovin’ Motel”. Great video!
@@clairewillow6475 maybe... just maybe, that was a staged plan from the production to balance the fact that during most of their interactions he seemed to be about to lose it to them? hahahaha whatever the reason was the car was cute tho.
@@nancysiciliana3387 The thing is, they said they knew it wasn't an A frame but wanted to call it that anyway. They know things, then ignore them which seems worse.
Maybe I'm weird for this but hotel and motel are completely different vibes to me.. a hotel you go to because it's a good place to tie you to your real destination. You gotta feel at least somewhat taken care of. DIY too much and it will come off very cheap and weird But a motel? That's where you go out of necessity and leave as soon as your car turns on again. DIY as you want, I'm not looking behind the door anyways
Their whole angle is to makeover the idea of the motel because ALL of us have seen motels as anonymous stop-over places. That's the premise of the show.
@@FallenAngelBrass okay but that doesn't change how people will likely not go to a motel to enjoy themselves.. And making it hyper trendy is also not helping there at all
Omg this is wild. The fact that she called her dad to do the work so it would be cheaper! Like it’s kind of scary watching them try to cut cost every way they can… cuz what about the things we don’t see.
The motel is actually relatively close to Canada's biggest population centre, the Greater Toronto Area. Toronto is the fourth largest city in North America and Sauble Beach is a pretty popular summer destination. I hate their style, but their business seems to be doing well.
The two places they set up in, Price Edward County and Sauble Beach, are literally overrun with tourists from Toronto every summer. They're the perfect locations.

This show is the Hallmark Christmas movie equivalent of home makeover shows. Only fun if you view them as comedies even though the creators intended them as dramas. Things we learned: "Restore to Glory Days" = Spray paint over The June Motel Experience is a great idea for a horror movie They consider plastic vinyl "way too rustic" The most important demographic to target is blackout drunk millennial's with money they've saved from living at home These girls made poor Rick question his life choices The Cheetah print sneakers explained everything about who these girls are Also, your pup's instincts are why she has survived so long, she clearly has the ability to sense danger.
anyone notice that the "smart, inexperienced 21 year old" they hired also has a father who is an architect? I'm not necessarily saying it's a problem, but would it be that THAT is why they hired a 21 yo w no experience??
Regarding the drop ceiling--I live in a 115-year-old farmhouse that had drop ceilings in one of the main living areas. My husband tore it down within the first week that we moved in. Under the drop ceiling (which wasn't as hideous as the one in the video) is plaster and lath. It is far, far worse than the drop ceiling. It is such an overwhelming project to make over that it has sat that way for way longer than I care to admit. I think that is why people started putting up drop ceilings, especially in older homes. They wanted to cover up their crumbling plaster ceilings. Our walls have some paneling in some rooms, too. I'm sure if we pull the paneling down, it will be a huge mess. My option will be to paint the cheap-looking paneling so that it looks less depressing. Older homes have charm, but you have to be willing to put in a lot of work. LOL
I dislike how they did not use the existing features to their advantage. Instead they sound so mean about everything, like they’re working against everything they have (an old motel with some charming features, a small budget). It’s a cheap sticker which had to cover everything and will wear off very soon. But as it is good business you cannot really blame them. So sorry for the painted over wood :(
your comment about how online it looks like this amazing instagramable spot but in reality it's not very good is so spot on the feedback everyone says about their 1st June Motel location.
My company tends to be cheap about a lot of things - we used to be a low overhead contractor anyways - and even when we were too cheap to properly maintain our buildings we still paid a company to tend plants for us. I don't know how much it costs, but if the previous generation of owners didn't balk at it, it couldn't have been that bad. They water and fertilize them, trim or replace them as needed, and the leaves never look dusty. I expect an overpriced, trendy motel to be better than my office. Heck, I expect a moderate priced motel to be better than my office.
busted out laughing at the "leaning" art when you said "i don't know why I hate it" -it's essentially a picture of one of those painted wall arches lmaoo
really the Netflix show is more of an ad against them, they didn't really do much of a makeover except for paint, bedspread, some stuff in the bathroom, fake plants, the pool area, the reception and the kitchen. Personally I was hoping for more of a tear down.

@@dramaqale12 Yes! A really nice corporate office I worked in did this as well. We had numerous live snake plants throughout the building and every two weeks a florist came in to water/refresh them. We also used this florist for arrangements the office sent out.
Or they could use native plants because this ain’t the tropics!
Not sure what's worse, their deisgn style or the sounds of their voices.
Those voices haunt my nightmares!
Their vocal fry is ridiculous!
weirdest voices On them both. And that ‘insta language’ is even worse
Horrible voices!!!! Especially the girl with the dark hair!🙄😭🤮😵
Ya their voices are annoying, I agree 😅
I absolutely hate fake plants too, it's like the opposite of why you'd want plants in the first place. Plants are for life, air, nature, and plastic plants just feel so gross.
And fake plants collect so much dust
The hospital room I stayed in last year had that same tile in the restroom .
This 'June' look is god awful and is ALREADY dated now. I can't imagine in 5-10 years.
Especially for those room rates!!!!
@@marissaemily8452 I agree with this. Supporting small local artists us awesome. Some of my favorite prints have come from people in my area.
The leaning"art" will fall on your head when your bestie, bridesmaid leans over to sick up after too may pineapple/coconut cocktails
His face when she said “bachelorette parties” !!!!!!
Drop ceilings became popular in the 70’s during an energy crisis. The lowered ceiling would conserve heat. But, yes, they’re ugly.
I was going to say the same thing! It was a weird time...😊
Ironically it did not really lower heating bills - that was mostly a marketing ploy. They were also put in as a cheap way to hide duct work and wiring that was added when people installed AC units and overhead lighting in older homes.
PLEASE go spend a night there, it would make this series a full circle hahaha
i like this series a lot, it's like hate watching something with a friend :)
Same, I need her to do the whole season!
Rick is the best person in the show
Breakout star for real
I would love for you to secretly go to the June hotel OMG! Please!
Yes another video of you watching Motel Makeover!!!! I'm so into this looool
The one thing worse than faux plants, is faux plants thick with dust. Give them a month.
Yesss! I was thinking about the dust all the time!!!!! Imagine for people that are allergic Jesusssssss who is going to clean all these plants?
I love hearing your take on this show. It's funny that when I watched this series, I thought about you. HAHA And they are going for this 1970s retro feel. I'm 51 years old and remember the 1970s. They are NOT doing 1970s retro vibe. They've done more of a mid to late 80s high end look that most of America didn't pick up on until the early 90s.
I'm 30 and I could tell how off they were! I don't understand how they were so uninformed.
I'll admit I watched this whole show in one go because I love this concept and I secretly want to do something like this, but someone please tell these women that liking avocado toast and rose is not a personality trait.
Apparently it is for some narcisistic city bimbo's who think they're the best thing that happened to the "ghost"town..🙄🙄🙄
Imagine getting there and realizing the light fixtures and cabinets are spray painted 🥴
Actually all the tourist accommodations on the Bruce Peninsula rely almost exclusively summer profits and most restaurants and other businesses there are seasonal, particularly in Sauble beach and Tobermory.
This town literally shuts down for tourism so they don’t need it to work in the winter. April - October is season including the shoulder seasons.
They did a thing with Toronto influencers about a year ago, The Sorry Girls were there... And I think it looks better after it's totally done (based on their vlog). But I'm not a fan of the neon signs and fake plants. It reminds me of a slightly nicer, trendier Jersey Shore Motel.
It’s also VERY much the sorry girls vibe though
@@wpbhd Kinda yeah, but I think the sorry girls have better taste.
Let's talk about GENTRIFICATION, the contractor seem to hate their guts.
He got them a car as a goodbye gift though
@@clairewillow6475 maybe... just maybe, that was a staged plan from the production to balance the fact that during most of their interactions he seemed to be about to lose it to them? hahahaha whatever the reason was the car was cute tho.
Thank you for doing this, I could not bring myself to watch this. You are so refreshing.
Am I the only one that’s bothered that they keep calling it an “A frame”, when it’s not an A frame?
In the episode they mention knowing it’s not actually an A-frame but they like calling it that.
No. These women know nothing.
SAAAAAAME!!!
Their whole butchering of the English language is excruciating to listen to. The fake Valley Girl vocal fry is killing me.
@@nancysiciliana3387 The thing is, they said they knew it wasn't an A frame but wanted to call it that anyway. They know things, then ignore them which seems worse.
“The bathroom looks fine… I mean, I personally hate it but-” 😭😭
The old headboards was actually really nice and would’ve fitted in with their new design. That’s money that could’ve been spent elsewhere 🤷🏽♂️
Maybe I'm weird for this but hotel and motel are completely different vibes to me.. a hotel you go to because it's a good place to tie you to your real destination. You gotta feel at least somewhat taken care of. DIY too much and it will come off very cheap and weird
But a motel?
The target demo for them made no sense to me.. in the middle of Canada? Ok
I'm so happy I didn't end up starting this show, and equally happy that you're making this series so I can hate watch at a distance. Your commentary and reviews are always spot on!
the cringe level on this show is real. LOVING your review. Keep it up so we dont have to lol
This show is the Hallmark Christmas movie equivalent of home makeover shows. Only fun if you view them as comedies even though the creators intended them as dramas.
Things we learned:
"Restore to Glory Days" = Spray paint over
The June Motel Experience is a great idea for a horror movie
They consider plastic vinyl "way too rustic"
The most important demographic to target is blackout drunk millennial's with money they've saved from living at home
These girls made poor Rick question his life choices
The Cheetah print sneakers explained everything about who these girls are
Also, your pup's instincts are why she has survived so long, she clearly has the ability to sense danger.
anyone notice that the "smart, inexperienced 21 year old" they hired also has a father who is an architect?
I'm not necessarily saying it's a problem, but would it be that THAT is why they hired a 21 yo w no experience??
It's possible. Courtney did actually seem to be doing a good job, though. She was far less obnoxious than the other two.
Bless you for doing the hard work for our benefit. Fully agree with your idea for the lobby
Foam/ drop ceilings were put in the 70s when the price of heating went up. The drop ceiling makes it much cheaper to heat big places
Great to know!
Omg thank you for watching the whole series for us 🤣
*with us
Regarding the drop ceiling--I live in a 115-year-old farmhouse that had drop ceilings in one of the main living areas.
So sorry for the painted over wood :(
Please keep doing these! I binged the whole thing, not because I liked the show, but because it was so bad and their voices!!
Yes omg their voices!
Who talks like that? They’re from Canada not the Valley in the 80s.
your comment about how online it looks like this amazing instagramable spot but in reality it's not very good is so spot on the feedback everyone says about their 1st June Motel location.
No fake plants, especially in rooms! Dust magnets and lots of people have dust allergies. Freaking weird hoteliers. Lol
Trying to sound like a sommelier
Isn't leaning artwork a potential liability, unless they bolted it in
My company tends to be cheap about a lot of things - we used to be a low overhead contractor anyways - and even when we were too cheap to properly maintain our buildings we still paid a company to tend plants for us.
Thank you Paige. Now I don’t have to waste any precious time watching this series. Won’t even bother. Your commentary is all I need. Is it weird that I find you so soothing, especially when you’re being super negative? Love hating things with you!
In warm climates like the Caribbean, drop ceilings are popular in older homes for trapping the heat, however they are not as popular in modern builds.
After your first review I hate watched the entire series in one day, so I am HERE FOR THIS! The "up-talk" nearly killed me but I got through it.
Lol love your review of this 😂 I’m an interior designer (and coincidentally don’t live too far from the June motel Sauble Beach) and I really love your design taste and agree with a lot of your comments! Now I wanna go just to see how this actually looks in real life… I’ve stayed in too many Airbnb’s that look nice in photos but then cheap irl 😔
Looking forward for the next episode 😄
The paneling sanded and restained in a lighter tone would be unbelievably cool
I work at a luxury vacation rental company and we all talked/laughed/cringed at this show. I feel like their theme is basically the pink wall in LA
I love the Goo. That's all. Oh, and you're funny. Now that's all.
Rewatching this after Maggie Mae Fish’s video about this series. Both very interesting and valuable insights into the craziness of this show and these moteliers.
Love Maggie Mae!
Yo, Paige you are hilarious!
I laughed so hard thru this whole video, your face expressions to all of their design ideas cracked me up!
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
I love you covering this motel renovation.
Yes, love that you continued this series!
5:45 I lived in a touristy beach town and a looot of people made most of the money in the summer. A lot of the shops/hotels/restaurants would hire for a season and keep minimal staff (sometimes only the owners) working the rest of the year. It’s not that uncommon I don’t think. Everywhere I went also had resident discounts so you know they were charging all the tourists extra.
“the bathroom looks fine…i mean i personally hate it” 😂
yeah i really like that more austere/dark vintage vibe that you showed-- it reminds me of classic diners and the turn of the 20th century. It would definitely be more adaptable and still chic. I'm a hypocrite because i have a vase of fake flowers next to me lol but i hate the texture of those plastic fake leaves ughhghghg just totally bad sensory experience... let alone when its covered in dust!!
This is by Huron Lake. It is a very popular area and after the started their hotel, the place became a bit too expensive. But it is cool area. They’re in Canada. Their original motel is super expensive almost $500 a night in the high season. I love your commentary tho
Rick looks like a deer caught in the headlights - ROFL! His facial expressions...and yours are priceless!
You could fill out a bingo card with every single millennial girlboss trope and have all of the squares filled by the end of this series. They are so cringey.
So spot on! God, the shallowness and the lack of imagination.
Idk why but I lost it when you said "you can see the battery behind them" lol
Such a bummer to me that they didn’t plan on staying open in the winter
The town basically shuts down in winter. The winters can be pretty brutal and the beaches a no go so I doubt it’d be viable to stay open year round.
@@sheila3936 lame :( winter can be fun too. Our winters in Michigan are pretty much the same as theirs and up north is the best in the winter!
My wild speculation on the girls is that they attend gloop seminars.
Well on the brighter side , after a few rosé, nobody will give a crap about what the rooms look like
You need to drink a few bottles!
Paige, new to your channel, but loving it! Honest sarcasm is in my wheelhouse! Keep the zingers coming!
YESSS THANK YOU I love that you're reviewing more of this !!
I LOVE this series you're doing!!!!!! I look forward to watching these
Was "the Knight Hotel " a chain? There was a chain in Missouri that was the called "the Knights Inn" that had a similar exterior appearance.
Thank you for pinch hitting for us. I couldn't stomach watching past the second episode. I always enjoy recaps of shows I've never watched, they're so much better!
If you look at the June motel reviews, people do say that it’s a very cheap experience and that it’s only good for photos
"I am sadly hooked" is exactly how I felt watching the whole series. I just needed to know how it turned out
You are hilarious 😆 those floor tiles look bad.. but I’d stay there if they had 50% off sale.. I would check it out 😂 but lockdown here so can’t go anywhere
